My problem with all religions boiled down to this.

They are shit at keeping to their own rules or just want my money. The Christian, Jewish and Islamic are the worse.

The Ten Commandments are the most often broken. They kill, rape, steal to their hearts content.

The fundamental reason of religions is to control and steal. In the guise of selling you a ticket to a place that's a myth. Unless someone can prove to me heaven does exist, I'm assuming it's a con trick.

Errors:

*worst not "worse"
*hearts' content not "hearts content"
*for religions not "of religions"
*"In the guise of selling you a ticket to a place that's a myth." is a fragment. get rid of the period after "steal" and make the "I" in "In" lowercase to combine the two sentences into one good sentence.
*a "con" is a trick already. You shouldn't add redundancy.

You're right about religion, but you're also a self-important twit. No offense.

If you are talking about more than one, then you put the ' to the right of the s. If you were talking about a single heart, then you would be correct.

I didn't want to do a page of script and was hoping others would chip in. Seems I'm getting a lesson in grammar rather than a debate on how others feel about the subject.

the big 3 you named in the thread starter all originate from one man.. Abraham, or rather can all trace their lines back to that one common denominator. Essentially three branches from the same tree. Expecting substantially different behaviors from any of the three doesn't make much sense. They are all convinced of their infallibility, all convinced that if you do not agree with them you're going to be punished and many so called believers are willing to kill you over your non-compliance (to a lesser extent in modern times).

However, asking for proof of the afterlife or 'heaven' is equally as foolish as believing in it. What comes after death be it rewards or punishment are articles of faith. By definition they cannot be proved or disproved...to believe they must be taken on faith. By no means does that imply that YOU need to have faith, but demanding proof for you to be convinced is simply argumentative for its own sake.

True Christians, and I am talking about knowledgeable, compassionate and intelligent Christians (yes Virginia, they do exist) would not judge you. They would love you. Yes they would definitely try and 'help' you to see the light but they would not be passing laws to force you to conform to their beliefs (render unto Caesar what is Caesar's) and they most definitely would not be murdering, raping or stealing to their hearts/heart's/hearts' content. The problem is that those kinds of Christians are a very small minority and the real churches have almost all disappeared. The ones where their focus is on how a person worships in this world for what comes in the next are gone and it appears that now they are more concerned with forcing their morality down the throats of everyone around them, even those that tacitly agree with them so that they can FEEL righteous instead of acting righteously.

I've seen religion turn a lot of bad people into good people. I can't knock something like that. Even if they just use it as a guide to living right, that's a good thing... regardless if it's all imaginary. Sometimes people had it real fucked up and ain't got shit to live for, except their faith... and the only thing keeping them on a positive path is what glory they think awaits them after death. I ain't going to let isolated groups of extremists make me think religion is all bad. Religions have been infiltrated by groups taking advantage for their own agenda, but when you dig to the core you'll see something different in almost all of them.

True. Most of the Old Testament is based on stories, which once looked into are exposed as fiction. To base your life on these stories is absurd. To kill people over the sight differences of thinking or practice of those beliefs shows man basic hatred for anyone who doesn't do or think as they think he should. "Love thy Neighbour." Lovely idea and no more than that.

Asking for money for this myth is as I said a con. That so many fall to.

No I have a great life. Look at those slinging the abuse and figure out what they've achieved in life.

Glen has it right.

religion is a creation of man's ego. man's ego is so big he thinks he can understand the mysteries of life and what happens before and after but he is foolish. he can't. its just all guesses from old stories that have changed so much since they were originally told and then taken and used as a way to control the populous.

Jesus pissed off the Jews by upsetting their business in the temple. Since then Christians have done little else but invent ways to make money.

Listen, goofballs, the reason some of us give a shit about spelling and grammar is this: proficiency in spelling and grammar is directly correlated with serious (non fluff) reading and study. If you write/type "definately" instead of "definitely" or confuse its and it's and their, there, and they're, and so on, then it's likely you're not very well read. And if you're not well read and are clearly non-rigorous, then why the fuck should someone give a fuck about your opinion on topics which don't concern manual labor? See?

I'll listen to Markham's opinion on filling sandbags or watering plants, maybe, but on the finer points of metaphysics and quantum mechanics, not so much. Any other questions?

You tell 'em, Buff. It's time these idiots understood that this porn forum, Go Fuck Yourself, is the place for serious (non fluff) reading and study online. Excellent point.

I believed in fairy tales too.

Until I was 5. I dunno whats keeping everyone else from growing up.

Some religious people can be fairly smart. It's amazing to me that they can then turn around and be so fucking stupid.

The "have faith" argument is the worst. There's tonnes of reasons why it doesn't make sense. Not to mention, even religious people acknowledge that faith isn't a very good way of making decisions when its not an issue of religion.

Here's a pretty decent debate on the god of the bible:

So what? My political stance, for example, isn't very relevant to how I should boil an egg. They are two entirely separate things, like religious beliefs and everything else.

If someone wants to believe in [whatever] what do you care?

Many atheists these days are just as bad as religious nuts, droning on and on about what fucking geniuses they are because they don't believe in God, as if atheism is so mind-blowing nobody else has ever considered it before.

Religious people are obviously aware of atheism, and choose not to subscribe to it. So what?

People who persistently believe in [whatever] despite evidence to the contrary aren't just supporting that particular IDEA they are supporting a whole fucking way of decision making that is irrational and unsupportable, and left to its own devices will infect and destroy a civilized way of life.

How long do you think we would survive if , say, bridge engineers were allowed to sign off on structures by saying "I've looked it over, and I've prayed over it, and I have faith that it will continue standing this year." Nuclear reactors should get this treatment too right?

Stupidity, laziness and ignorance cause enough problems in this world, adding to it by condoning irrational magical thinking is criminal.

Religion is like a penis.
it's fine to have one.
it's fine to be proud of it.
but please don't whip it out in public and start waving it around.
and PLEASE don't try to shove it down my children's throats.

Firstly, there is no "evidence to the contrary" with regard to God, there is simply no evidence to support it.

Secondly, not only has our 'civilization' been shaped by centuries of Christianity, some of the greatest scientists and thinkers in history have held religious beliefs. And freedom of thought or belief is arguably a major factor in where we are today.

If you want to argue that the Soviet Union, or China under the Cultural Revolution, was more civilized, decent or advanced than countries where religions have been tolerated, I'm all ears.

As you already know, that simply does not happen, has never happened, and is unlikely to ever happen, anywhere in the world, despite thousands of years of religious belief and billions of people believing in God. So I'm not sure why you're inventing such a ludicrous scenario to make your point.

What's the alternative to tolerating other beliefs? Gulags to 're-educate' people?

Religion allows one person to feel superior over his fellow man who doesn't share his belief. It flatters his ego, builds his pride, allows him to hate and ignore others who don't think like he does.

Now we see grammar used for the same reason.

An education was lost on you.

Paul has been away from the UK for so long that his English has become a bit rusty, I am sure his Czech is fluent and faultless.

Lost on you as well since you do not have an education.

True I have become rusty with my grammar, my Czech is enough to go shopping and do what I need to. Still very poor. I was too busy while working to learn any more than what was required to get girls naked and performing well.

Now I can't be asked. Adding Czech lessons to my now very busy life isn't on the agenda.

Been to the gardening centre and now off to do some planting, lawn is looking good. Plus I need to do some cooking.
