Strange sounds popping up in Canada and worldwide

UPDATE: The strange sounds phenomenon continues to spread, with videos popping up from Canada and around the world featuring similar noises. The weird sounds have allegedly been recorded in a number of cities, including Winnipeg, Chicago and Glasgow. While many viewers are intrigued, others are equally skeptical about the strange sounds.

http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2012/01...n_1208717.html

Two bizarre ? yet oddly similar ? videos of howling have been recorded in separate parts of Canada, capturing the imagination of YouTube viewers and skeptics alike.

The first video, posted on Jan. 13, reportedly recorded strange sounds in a forest in Conklin, Alta., a remote community northeast of Edmonton. The unidentified noise ? which sounds like it came straight from the soundtrack of a horror movie ? has racked up more than 500,000 views and dozens of comments, many of which question its authenticity.

Another video surfaced just a few days later on Jan. 15, with similar sounds apparently recorded in The Pas, Manitoba, more than 1,000 kilometres away.

I was awakened 2 nights in a row (including tonight) at 3 something in the morning from the sound of an enormous explosion. Everybody else hears it too, people outside said it comes from the sky. True story.

good point, but I think they might have all already said WTF before the camera was turned on. They were all just standing there apparently waiting for the sound, so it might have gone on for quite awhile before we get to see.

either way, real or fake it is interesting and kind of fun to think about

Could be.

Similiar moaning has been heard in Montreal - but after investigating turns out it was just the francophones wondering what will happen with their federal transfer funding if the province separates.

When there's a bear, cougar or strange sounds the birds and other animals are smart enough to quiet down

My guess is it's either fake or the sounds are caused by all the fracking they are doing under the ground there:

I have been many times, it just doesn't sound right. It's almost as loud as the background strange noise.

You are the same as all those other believers. People can point out 100 different reasons what it could be but you will accept none. The most likely in your fucked up fantasy world is something highly unlikely like aliens or something paranormal. In the meantime you keep on crying how you don't believe in that shit because you don't want people to make fun of you ofcourse.

No expert here, but did a little research since this shit sounds crazy. In any case NASA believe it could be the audio equivalate of the northern lights. All of the areas where the noises have been heard have been in the direct path of recent solar bursts. The sounds people are hearing "could" be the effects on dark-matter interacting with the earth's magnetic field.

Since this is the first time in modern history we have come into a period of increase solar activity, the scientific community is really not sure what additional effects could there be on the earth. I guess we just have to wait and see.

In any case, I find all of this stuff to be extremely interesting.

Industrial sounds, probably from excavation mining or drilling, most likely gas or steam release, reflected off an inversion layer in the atmosphere.

The sonic equivalent of a mirage. Lots more industrial activity in the canadian north, and it's all very loud. Cold dense air flows over a pocket of warmer air and it creates the equivalent of a giant drum membrane a mile or two up in the air, that catches and reflects, and amplifies like a drum body or guitar body, loud noises.

In any case, I find all of this stuff to be extremely interesting.
link? and WTF does dark matter have to do with this, thats crazy talk.

the northern lights happen up where the air is too thin to transmit sound waves, so that seems unlikely.

The solar activity we are having now is high, but not yet extremely high, it's still well within recent historical limits, last I checked. We are still waiting to see if this could be the beginning of a large cycle maximum.

I've heard the radio wave effects of metorites, thats one way that EM up in the upper atmosphere can cause sounds down here - but that sound is very different, a soft crackling hiss.

But I'd be happy to see supporting links.

so you think it's what then?

I've heard steam and high pressure gasses coming from pipes, the sound is very much like that sound. And sounds reflecting off atmospheric inversion layers is a known phenomena.

Here's an example of northern lights associated sounds...

Quote:
"Our research proved that, during the occurrence of the northern lights, people can hear natural auroral sounds related to what they see. In the past, researchers thought that the aurora borealis was too far away for people to hear the sounds it made. This is true. However, our research proves that the source of the sounds that are associated with the aurora borealis we see is likely caused by the same energetic particles from the sun that create the northern lights far away in the sky. These particles or the geomagnetic disturbance produced by them seem to create sound much closer to the ground," said Professor Unto K. Laine from Aalto University.

Details about how the auroral sounds are created are still a mystery. The sounds do not occur regularly when the northern lights are seen. The recorded, unamplified sounds can be similar to crackles or muffled bangs which last for only a short period of time. Other people who have heard the auroral sounds have described them as distant noise and sputter. Because of these different descriptions, researchers suspect that there are several mechanisms behind the formation of these auroral sounds. These sounds are so soft that one has to listen very carefully to hear them and to distinguish them from the ambient noise.

Sounds available at: https://youtube.com/watch?v=NRZfKqhs6rM
The theory one hears about most often about those sounds is that they are created by the same thing that creates meteorite sounds - intense bursts of radio waves that hit the ground and when their wavelength is just right they cause a reaction vibration in plants and minerals. Because it is radio white noise, covering the whole spectrum, every burst of it is likely to find something with the right wavelength to interact with.

I heard a lot of this during the last big leonid shower - a wonderful soft rattling hiss every time a big leonid flashed.

ooops forgot the supporting link from science daily http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases...0709093048.htm

what kind of mines?

And do we have a map location for those sounds? how close are they to the big bitumen mines and refineries?

We'd have to listen to these other videos to see if the sounds were similar. I did a little searching, so far I haven't listened to recordings that confirm that strange sounds like these are global, until I do i assume that is just mythology.

I have listened to recordings that sounded like distant booms, not like giant horns, which is what that sounded liek to me - like the sound of steam, or natural gas from a well purge.

Sounds like that have a natural explanation, we just have to figure out what it is.
