Every time I go to the states it always surprises me how fat you guys are (generally) compared to the rest of the World. You see it on the TV, read about it in the papers but when you see it with your own two eyes, it's hilarious. Cultural differences, sedentary lifestyle, plus you are bombarded with advertising champagnes which are much more aggressive that other parts of the World. Also fast food is waaay cheaper over there. Big Mac in UK is $3.00 it's 99c in the US right?

A friend of mine had an exchange student live with them for 3 weeks last year. She was from China and 17 years old. She was shocked at the size of the candy bars. She likes chocolate and so she bought one of those giant Hershey bars assuming it would last 3 weeks. She ate it all and got sick then ate about 5 more of them while she was here. she joked with us that if she lived here she would be 400 pounds because we have so much candy and junk food everywhere you go.

The first time i went to the US i was also shocked about many things related to food and drinks. The sizes of the meals man. Just a starter was twice the size of what i consider a normal meal here. The sizes of coke's. The free refills. The coffee cups...crazy, just crazy.
It's absolutely no mystery why the US has a huge obesity problem.

Everyone should make a concerted effort to count calories, then adjust accordingly when they realize how much excess they are consuming.

I'd be interested in knowing WHAT those people who moved here and gained weight ate though. Not everyone moves here then eats out 24/7. Did they still gain the weight by buying regular ingredients at American stores and cooking at home, keeping their usual portion sizes? Or they just moved here and managed to lose all self control?

its true....i go to China often now.
I am the fattest person wherever i go there. Im not fat, if i lost 10-15 pounds id be ripped at 190lbs. Flat stomach at least..lol

Anyway, all their stuff contains less sugar. Even ice cream doesn't taste as good. OR when you think you are getting some chocolate topping its actually a sweet bean they use. The soda pop is watered down, it is mostly flavoured water.
Takes some getting used to.

When i was eating out, i would sometimes just order two entrees. They were that small.

i've experienced the opposite there as in size of meals you order. When you go to places locals go to meals are sized just right or too much, never had a meal that was too little. Remember a restaurant for locals, the food was amazing. Huge portions, and all of them were eating alot more than i was, i was surprised how they eat so much and stay skinny. Probably because the food is way healthier than here.
And at the majority of places (i think its common there) they serve meals on plates in the middle and give you an empty plate. Share meals with the company you're with, a good system because it gives variety. A couple was sitting at a table and the plates of food kept coming! About 5 plates full of food and the 2 of them ate everything.

And the taste, damn I've eaten the best stuff i ever had in china. Ofcourse some meals were bad but maybe 2 or 3 out of 30 something. Not a bad score

I think we were in different towns..lol

Although when i was in Shanghai we went to a restaurant, and yeah the food just kept on coming. However im talking about the regular meals you get when you are in a hurry.

Once i got used to the food i ate where the chinese ate. It was a series of small restaurants, you just buy a little from each one. Very cool.
my favourite was a noodle, they call hot dry noodle...or sesame dry noodles.
As well as bbq chicken, they dust with some hot sauce. I could eat that each day.

It has only been in the past few years here in Thailand where the candy bars when from bite size to American size. Along with lots of other larger sugar items and fast food, it is no surprise the locals are now starting to put on some weight.

I find it very funny when people point the finger at the US calling people there fat when I do believe that Mexico still holds the title as the most over weight.

Some guy I grew up with (UK), he competed at a high level in swimming, he was also one of the top cross-country runners in our county. He was always in great shape. He worked in the UK for a while, stayed slim, then went off to work in New York, now he's huge!

Never saw one western fast food outlet when we were in Thailand the first time. Bet that's changed now?

I'm 5'11 and weight 155lbs. But that's cause I eat better than most. For example, ordered a "Number 5" from my favorite Mexican restaurant last night for dinner. It comes with a cheese enchilada, a beef taco, bean burrito, and cup of green chili. Ate the taco and cheese enchilada last night. Today I'm going to pour the green chili on the burrito and cut it in half, then take half to work with me for lunch and then have the other half for dinner. Basically one meal turns into three.

My Bad. I'm sure I saw a Big Mac on the 99c menu in LA a couple years back.
Anyway, if it's in the Economist, it must be true:

Same in Holland. The small menu's are gone. It's medium, big, large. Just gets bigger and bigger.

I guess my first questions would be why would you go to McDonald's in the first place and why did you order the largest sizes possible? You do realize that all meals come in 3 sizes (at least).

It's absolutely no mystery why the US has a huge obesity problem.
Again, they have 3 or 4 sizes of sodas available and no one forces anyone to have a refill.

That is your own fault. It is easy to eat well on the road if you stop and pay attention to your surroundings. There is never a reason to step inside a fast food restaurant.

These are all from places I found on the road:

Shamrock, TX

Albuquerque, NM

Miles City, MT

Valparaiso, IN

I have hundreds of such examples. All you have to do is open your eyes.

Fast food isn't the only thing. I haven't eaten any in well over a decade now, but I'm not rail thin. Don't drink sodas either, not in many years. There's really no magic bullet

Look, the US has a massive obesity problem. No matter how many pictures of healthy food you show.
The whole world knows this and we all know why.

Then you most likely don't burn enough energy. Because 9 out of 10 times there is a magic bullet.

The UK isn't much better, tons of nasty food they fry everything here. Lots of processed foods and tons of additives, preservatives, long shelf life food. When you go into the more ghetto areas, the amount of large size peeps is unreal.

People are lazy as shit and won't exercise ever or even walk anywhere farther than their car.
It's not about what you eat. I eat more than a fat person but I'm in shape..

the problem, IMO with Americans, is we are all greedy and want MORE. plus most of us are poor as fuck, so if you have to feed a family of 5, its cheaper to go to McDonalds then going to the store and making healthy food for you and your kids.

Plus, and not trying to sound like an anti-technoloy wierdo, 20 years ago there was no Xbox, PS3 or iPads that kids now sit in front of. I'm only 32, but when I was in my teens, we would run around my neighborhood playing capture the flag until the wee hours of the morning. Now, you can do that online with Halo

Think about it, when WW3 comes, food will be shorter than the populace. What better way to guarantee a steady source of protein than by killing, processing and freezing fat Americans.

If you do it right, buying at the store saves a lot more money..
Fast food isn't cheaper, just more convenient.

There was a shift toward "low fat" for years. When they lowered the fat, they added more sugar. People are just starting to realize that fat isn't your enemy, it's sugar.

The "more is better" portion size mentality didn't help either.

Exactly, its not that hard to eat healthy when you are out. Instead of a burger and fries, order chicken breast and salad. Its not rocket science.

Just got back from walking the dogs and was giving this subject some thought. Anyone that does any decent amount of travel will be able to grasp it.

Since Battus wants to be the squeaky wheel in this conversation, we will take Amsterdam as an example. I have seen McDoalds's, KFC, Burger King and other crap food there. While I have never walked in one I have walked inside your Starbucks so I think it is safe to say that they offer multiple sizes at your McD's there as well. The main difference is that most people in AMS walk or ride bicycles everywhere as opposed to everyone driving here.

If you travel to a city like NYC or San Francisco where people are accustomed to walking you will notice a lot less obesity there too. Come to LA where we have decent weather all year long, people spend more time outside living a healthy lifestyle as well.

For the record, the largest meals I can recall eating were done in Amsterdam and Barcelona

Ate the taco and cheese enchilada last night. Today I'm going to pour the green chili on the burrito and cut it in half, then take half to work with me for lunch and then have the other half for dinner. Basically one meal turns into three.
I'm the same way. After I started being more careful about how much food I was consuming, my appetite grew smaller, so that I can rarely finish a meal when eating out at a restaurant. Therefore, I almost always get the leftovers to-go, and stretch that into 1 or 2 more meals, so that the cost per meal goes down.

At my favorite Chinese restaurant, I always order a few extra entrees, so that I have a wide variety of food to taste from, and then enough leftovers for a few days, which comes in handy when I get really busy.
