Before you go and see THE HOBBIT, read this first

Just a quick heads-up if you want to see THE HOBBIT.

This movie is available in a brand new format called "High Frame Rate" or "48fps" in some locations. This version of the movie was shot and rendered in 48 frames per second instead of the usual 24 frames per second of standard movies, and in some theaters, it is displayed in 48 FPS too. I haven't seen it yet but people describe this new format as "so clear, it as if the movie screen is actually a window to a world on the other side".

Anyway, this is NOT the IMAX version. If you go to see the IMAX version you are getting Imax, not 48FPS. While Imax is a higher frame rate than the usual 24, it's still not the new format.

So if you are planning to see the hobbit and want to see it in the new movie format, be sure to look for the "48fps" or "high frame rate version" tag at your theatre or online.

Next, I don't know if this is evil marketing or not, but -

If you see The Hobbit in 48FPS, you will see a 2 minute trailer for the new Star Trek : Into darkness movie. But, if you see the Hobbit in iMAX, you are treated to a special *9 MINUTE TRAILER for Star Trek.

I want to see the Hobbit in 48fps, but I want to see the 9 minute trailer for trek too. Decisions, decisions....

Thanks for the link! It's a pretty good read, and I think I get where they are coming from. If you have ever seen the new 3D TV's showing a movie in 2D at the super-high refresh rate (120, 240, 480 hz, etc), the video is so clear it's... weird. I saw Avatar, in 2D, at 240Hz recently and it looked like I was watching a cheap soap opera at first. Some people even called it the "soap opera effect".

It takes a while to appreciate the improve image quality, especially when the camera pans left to right, or 3D movies in general. Both look bad in the conventional format, but we have become used to distortion and don't even notice it much anymore (but I do).

I think people mistake "noise" for "warmth". For example, alot of people like the sound of vinyl records over CD's, or old tube amplifiers over modern amps and claim the quality is worse with modern technology, which is false. Records have pops and scratches, tone arms pickup the rumble and feedback, tube amps hum and suffer from internal feedback etc. All that noise is comforting to some people, but it definately sounds worse, not better.

In the movies, film is grainy and uneven, scratched, worn, etc. It "feels" nice, but modern digital is good and getting better every day. Star Trek 2009 was shot on film and looks great, but it was converted, edited, and rendered to digital. The film grain is there but not the "noise" of film. For contrast, compare it to DRIVE or THE SOCIAL NETWORK, both of which were shot on the Red Epic Camera. Just stunning image and color quality, with a dynamic range that is better than film.

I think I will check out The Hobbit HFR tomorrow night.

I saw regular old Imax 3d today, and it looked great. Not a bad movie also. I think it was better than at least one of the Rings movies.

regarding the HFR thing, I want my movies to look cinematic, not real.

During the big Golem scene, three different people went out for a bathroom break.

I would piss in my pants before missing that. Why do some people even bother going to the theater if they can't hold their piss during the highlight of the movie? "I gotta piss now. I'll watch that part on HBO in 6 months".

I heard the exact opposite,

I was told to see it in 24fps. Not the higher.

But I do want to see PT ANDERSON's new movie in 64mm.

Read the whole J.R.R. Tolkien thing way back in college when it was all the rage. After finishing it, I put it down and never looked back.

Thank you.

i saw the hobbit today. i was impressed. its just as good as any of the trilogy sequels. peter jackson stayed true to the story. its got blood and decapitations, which is shit most directors take out so they can market the film to kids

Truly. The Hobbit is one of my favorite books and I was thoroughly impressed. They did a good job of not revealing too much about Smaug. I'm sure they are waiting until Bilbo meets Smaug in the hall (which should be a great scene).

The story is followed quite accurately. I found myself mouthing the words to the songs and names of the various swords and characters, as they were introduced. Great movie!

I don't know.. IMAX is the best movie format ever (Tron Legacy : omg. Transformers 3: oh wow. Batman : Jeezuz...)

And just to make it more complicated, here in Montreal they are showing it in "48FPS Ultra AVX 3D" only, but there is also a "48 FPS IMAX 3D".

We wanted to go this weekend but both formats are sold out so we purchased tix for next weekend instead.

Just what it sounds like: A 9 Minute trailer. Most trailers are 1-2 minutes. The first movie to issue a 9 minute trailer was The Dark Knight I think.

I would piss in my pants before missing that. Why do some people even bother going to the theater if they can't hold their piss during the highlight of the movie? "I gotta piss now. I'll watch that part on HBO in 6 months".

Apparently this format is making some people sick.

I just watched it today in 49fps and 3D and I loved it. It took me about 10-15 minutes for my eyes to adjust, but I thought it looked great. I thought the movie was a blast and I can't wait for the other two.
