Its now official. Fox news reports UN is a joke.

Yep
Just saw it on Wolf Blitzer. They were debating and talking about the key reasons why the UN is a joke.
That was funny

Fox is not news, it's brainwashing. Turn it off before it's too late for you!

By the way, you're in Israel, right? You should be happy the U.N. doesn't start enforcing all of their resolutions with force. I read some articles that said Israel is violating a lot of U.N. resolutions. Do you know anything about it or if it's true?

If you saw it, it must be true ... CNN only reports or says the truth...

But, if it is such a joke, why is it that Blair wants a "second resolution" from those Jokers ???
Maybe he feels like laughing instead of being laughed at....

Yep. I know all about it.
First, I am not sad that the UN is a joke. Its just is. Im a little releaved that US will soon ignore the UN.
About Israel related UN resolutions..
1. The descision to withdraw from Lebanon was followed to the word and got the approval of the UN and since we have been a target for attacks sponsored by Syria (former head of UN security council) and Iran. Where is the UN to pass resolutions against the attackers????
2. The resolutions about dithdrawing from the palestinian occupied territory talks about withdrawing to agreed-upon SAFE border. For that we need to agree with someone - that is preferrably the other side - meaning palestinians. Do you know any palestinian leader willing to stop sending his people to kill kids in Israel and take the country Israel has offered him? We look for one. The current "leader" has problems with the two factors of SAFE and AGREE. I guess its hard to shake out the terrorist in you
Israel is looking for peace NOT because if the UN but becaise we strive for peace. That is more than I can say about 90% of the Arab world.

The UN may have their shortcomings but I wouldn't say they're a joke.....just look at their efforts at keeping peace within Iraq over the years: http://www.un.org/Depts/dpko/dpko/co...on/uniimog.htm

Thanks for the comments. It's interesting to read perspectives from people who have different experiences. You seem to be one of the most level-headed Israelis I talk to when it comes to political arguments!

If that peace could be obtained, it would solve most if not all of the problems in the region. Maybe both leaders should be put asise and replaced by more moderate leaders....

I won't take side in this conflict ( Israel - Palestine) because it is based on killing civilians, both sides. I just find it very sad and honestly wouldn't want to live in either country by fear of all those attacks...

I can only answer your question to a certain extent since reality is never perfect.
Illegal settlements are illegal. Illegal things should be avoided and if exists should be resolved.
As to settlements - I think there are not good to israel and as to Israeli law - some of the settlements are illegal. As to those, they should be evacuated. But the word illegal implies law. Some of the settlements has been approved and therefore not illegal by Israeli law. About the concept of international law - its a problematic issue to define what is international law since there has never been an agreement on any
I personally wish settlements never existed. I also think the settleements in Tibet are a worse crime since they were pure envasion and not like in israel - a result of a was beeing imposed on Israel

Regardless - which has to do with directfiesta

Israel had a leader, actually 3, which any country could only wish having so moderate leaders. Yitzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres and Ehud Barak. All three went beyond what I think is humanly reasonable towards the palestinian ""leader"" (infamously knowen as Yasser). The problem as I see it is not the Israeli side on the political map.

No it wont. Actually peace can not be obtained BECAUSE of the nature of the middle east. When countries like Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lybia, Lebanon and other terror supporting countries have so much power and influence on the palastenians its hard to deal with them. Maybe US effect on the middle east will be much beyond Iraq. that is what I hope. Israel is being forced by the US to concessions time and again. Its time for some equilibrium - even forced one. The middle east will be peacefull once the arab world (especially the muslim) will grow into realization that Terror is not an option and peace is a good thing - not something you unfortunatelly have to agree to (temporarily) because you were given the thing you tried to extort with terror.

(P.S.: MrFiction: Thx.)

OK. But if you read my post carefully, you will see that I say " both leaders". Now, that means that I suggest that "Yasser Arafat be removed ( at least from negociation if not completely). So your last phrase is unneccessary.

On the other hand, you tell me how Israel had leaders that .... The key word is "had". I am saying leaders of both sides "now", so Sharon for the Israeli. Please do not tell me that Sharon has the diplomacy and will of a Shimon Peres or regreated Rabin.

During all peace talks, there has been terrorist attacks because the terrorist ( Hamas, ... ) do not want the peace. They want Israel OUT. But I think that this was a minority ( which now is growing because of all those attacks) and that the majority could "prevail" ( I hope Bush doesn't have a "patent" on this term: don't need an Acacia suit). On the other hand, your prime minister was assassinated by an Israeli extremist. So, you see...

The problem is on one side and remarks about the Israeli side are irellevant and not important. There is no problem with Sharon atm. Sharon is a side-effect and should do what he was elected for. As much as I don't like Sharon, he was elected in a democratic elections and if anything, I think he is too linient due to pressures from the US. I am a very left wing person (peace camp and all) and I think Israel is not doing enough when it comes to war on terrorism. Sharon has not done anything bad in the last term. If anything - as I said - he didn't do enough. it is very typical of war-protestors to concentrate on the irellevant issues of "oh. but what about the other side". When the palestinian side will be a possible partner for peace a new leader will be elected in Israel to accomodate for the change. Or maybe Sharon will be that person.

At times of war you should fight back - or atleast protect yourself. Shimon peres as well as Ehud barak were voted out because the reality did not fit in their plans ;) It is something Americans, canadians and European will learn in the hard way - reality is not so sweet as you imagine. Some people out there wants to kill you instead of making peace - you will see in time what I meant and after several "demonstrations" like 9/11 you may start realizing what I meant (no matter how much "anti-war" you are)

No i don't see.
Its hard for me to say anything that you wont precieve as somewhat offending - but: You don't know what you are talking(of thinking) about.
The fact that Israeli PM was assasinated by an Israeli Jewish extremist says nothing. The fact that Ehud barak was elected after Bibi - shows Israelis can put aside anger and try again and again to achieve peace even if attacked. You may look at it cynically but there is something strong and beautiful about these people and their desire for peace (something a little naive sometimes). There are crazy and extrimist anywhere. At least in Israel they dont get to rule the country.
quoting you "which now is growing because of all those attacks"... I can't start explaining to you why your view on this is twisted and is not relevant. You are too far from the facts and events to be able to judge it correctly. That's just my opinion.

I think you are peace seeking person judging by what you say - So am I. But from time to time dreamers need to open their eyes to see they are not on the edge of a high cliff.
