Whats the most popular browser on your site?

In January Chrome passed IE as #1 browser for FreeOnes visitors.

Just thought it was interesting to see IE got finally beaten as our surfers most prefererd browser. Been seeing a lot of promo for chrome last few months or so in Holland too.

Roald, here's our top 5 for January:

1. Internet Explorer 33.70%
2. Firefox 23.37%
3. Chrome 18.48%
4. Safari 10.77%
5. Android Browser 2.98%

This is analytics. I think our demographic may be a bit older than your demographic, which may explain why IE still is so popular on that particular site. It's also important to note that the IE numbers include all versions of IE combined. If it were done by browser version, it would be IE9, FireFox, IE8, then Chrome.

Hm thats indeed a big difference.

Chrome, IE and FF all take about 25% here.

Thank you!

Roald, if you dig a little deeper and consider screen resolutions, that can usually assist in determining demographics as well. For example, our top 5 screen resolutions are:
1. 1366x768 (13.86%)
2. 1024x768 (11.20%)
3. 1280x800 (8.83%)
4. 1920x1080 (8.39%)
5. 1280x1024 (7.51%)

As you can see, our #2 resolution is still 1024x768, which I would argue is a result of an older demographic for the most part. Whereas a lot of people, especially younger people, are gamers, they're far more likely to have larger screen resolutions. Those with older computers, and thus older resolutions, tend to not upgrade anywhere near as often.

I know a lot of people ignore 1024 resolutions these days. For us, even though it is only 11%, when you take 11% of a couple of million users, that adds up. From a business perspective, I'm not about to ignore a demographic of a couple of hundred-thousands users. And I'd certainly not ignore IE anytime soon. We accommodate IE back to IE7 where possible.

1. 1366x768 17.15%
2. 1280x800 11.27%
3. 1920x1080 9.65%
4. 1024x768 8.14%
5. 1440x900 6.40%

We dont ignore any of the top 5 browsers, or at least we try no to. Still way too many people using them.

It's interesting to see that, within a couple of percentage points, we're pretty close in terms of screen resolutions. And it's a pretty decent size data sample from which to see similarities.

I agree with you completely about too many people still using older browsers to ignore them. Ignoring them is potential money left on the table. Sometimes it can be a pain in the ass to accommodate, but better a pain in the ass than a pain in the wallet
