Google looks to cut funds to illegal sites

Google is in discussions with payment companies including Visa, Mastercard and PayPal to put illegal download websites out of existence by cutting off their funding.

The web search giant, which is embroiled in a long-running row over the way it deals with pirated material, is considering the radical measure so that it can get rid of the root cause instead of having to change its own search results.
Executives want to stop websites more or less dedicated to offering links to pirated films, music and books from making money out of the illegal material. The plans, still in discussion, would also block funding to websites that do not respond to legal challenges, for example because they are offshore.

that's stupid, if something is illegal and the bank knows it, then they HAVE to deny the transaction.

Great news. Hope it happens. I cant think of any crooks who will put up FREE links out of the goodness of their heart.

It might be messy at first but overall a win.

google can't make the police if they could protect their own interests.

Wow. Would have to be a lot of new adapting if that happened. I'll believe it when I see it, but Visa and MasterCard pulling out of illegal sites would have a big impact. Piracy will always exist, but not being able to make money from it would hurt.

The problem is to decide who is a pirate or not while they are not a tribunal.
Basically they want justice powers

Yes, it could be a problem. Current problem is worse. Everything someone produces gets stolen and thieves earn money from it.

Google isn't going to drop them. They are talking about getting Visa and MasterCard to drop them. Then it won't matter where they are listed.

Google doesn't want to censor them with search. Instead they want to rid the internet of illegal sites.

How? They are not the police? The only thing they should do is stop linking them. And they won't.

It doesn't take a genius to determine a piracy site. Google gets lots of takedown requests so they know. Now they are working with Visa and MasterCard to shut them down. So what? There are no pirates here. Everyone here hates pirate sites making money on their stolen material.

Google cant remove searches to pirated material. If they did, competing engines would not and would gain a ton of market share. So to remove their dependency on pirate traffic revenue, they need to put pirate sites out of business, and then no engine can have more pirate searches than google. Pirate traffic will be minimized and the loud voices accusing google af aiding piracy will be quelled.

With the mountain of data they have they could easily just remove them from SERPs but of course that would mean a small loss of market share.

Typical Google, want to get rid of piracy but want others to carry to burden. God forbid it impact them financially.

I hear you.

But better they get rid of the scum by passing the buck than to not get rid of it at all.

Re-read the article.

if Google succeeds, credit card companies will not work with sites in piracy mode. It will affect all search engines. It means the end of tubes for example because the financial incentive will be gone. TSIHTF!

Tubes make money from external adds, like dating, cams etc.

This will have no effect on them.

If they succeed in what exactly?

What is Google going to do?

Call up Visa and say you can't process for site x?

Lets see what happens. They obviously have some ideas about this. From the article it appears a key component of the idea is sites linking to. Think about ad networks and cams that link to illegal and cp....google is attempting to cast a wide net so they do not have to change their search methodology. Lets see what happens. My guess is google is having so many legal problems lately they are trying to counter the negative effects.

My other guess is this is a result of Google being overwhelmed by DMCA's from producers. A big thank you to all those who cc their DMCA's to google. It may be working.

I guess you did not read the memo about how politics in the US really works.

No one cares. And in the long run when Visa and MC see how much they will lose, they WONT put a stop to it and NOTHING will be done.
