In my city it just came up for vote last week - we voted fluoride down for the 4th time in 50 years.

I'm against it. Not for the health paranoia around it, as I have yet to see any convincing scientific studies saying it's harmful though there are plenty of unsubstantiated claims (I'm sure Wehateporn will go off on this). For me it's a policy issue - I think the public water supply should be used to deliver water, not chemicals intended to address a completely unrelated public health issue.

If there is a dental health crisis in a given location, there are more effective ways to mitigate it than fluoride in the water. Also in the 1950s when cities starting doing so, it was before fluoride toothpaste and other treatments were widely used - now nearly anyone gets plenty if they brush 2x/day as directed.

fluoride occurs naturally in water. it can be very high in ground wells in certain rocky areas. i don't see the need to add it to municipal or bottled water though. that needs to stop.

go a quick google search, there is a lot of articles about it. regardless, like deltav said if someone wants fluoride it should be up to them to use it for themseves, their family. not force it on an entire population.

It seems the people concerned about the possible health effects of fluoride don't really think of the benefits. Fluoride is VERY effective in fighting tooth decay, which is more important than just for your teeth, tooth decay over time can cause your liver to stop working which means you get a transplant or die. It is quite cheap to add to city water, and reach almost everyone in a city.

That being said, most people in western countries brush their teeth, see a dentist and all that stuff. Fluoride doesn't need to be swallowed, it can do it's job just as well in tooth paste or mouthwash, or even just add a small pill to water and rinse with that. Also it is almost impossible to filter fluoride out of your water if you don't want it, and it kind of sucks to be medicated with something and have little choice in the matter, no matter how safe it is.

Personally I think it should be used in the water in poor countries / areas, and phased out as most people can afford dental care. Overall I think the rewards are greater than the risks, but for most westerners, there is no need to be drinking it.

Why stop at that? Why don't you demand that your water not be cleaned and treated. Just drink that tasty untreated poop water.

making water safe to drink has absolutely nothing at all to do with adding stuff like fluoride. making water safe to drink is necessary, adding fluoride is not. pretty simple.

Fluoride is meant to kill bacteria in your mouth, and then you're supposed to spit it out...

It was never meant to be consumed.

If it was not in your water, would you add it to your coffee, or your soup, or whatever else you use tap water for?

Fluoride should not be in your water.

What is the damage? Is there any scientific studies from anywhere in the world?

You consume fluoride every single day. It is naturally occuring.

People need to start using the proper terms in regard to this debate. It is not simply "fluoride".

i grew up drinking well water up until 20 years of age when i moved out of my parents place. i had zero cavities in all this time. however within 4 years of moving out and drinking fluoridated city water, i had six. fluoride in the water did nothing for me.

Maybe you would have had 7...

Are you saying that Fluoride caused your cavities or just failed to protect you?

Fact: The Rothschilds funded the founding and further study of fluoride. They then pushed for fluoride to be put in the water of all poor areas. This helped them control the poor. It then slowly spread to cover all city-based drinking water. They did not anticipate that, but were happy that it did.

How exactly does fluoride "help them control the poor", pray tell? And I know "The Rothschilds" are a favorite Illuminati bogeyman of the David Icke brigade.

I'm against putting it in the water as a public policy issue (just voted against it locally), but some of you nutters spend too much time rotting your brain on conspiracy forums when your time would be better spent actually educating yourselves about science, politics, etc.

How much would fluoride cost your community if they went ahead with it? who would make money from it?

I see you're good with the mob mentality, what about discussion?
