Ecuador to sell a third of its amazon rainforest to Chinese oil companies

Bye bye rainforest.

Quote:
Ecuador is planning to auction off three million of the country's 8.1 million hectares of pristine Amazonian rainforest to Chinese oil companies, Jonathan Kaiman of The Guardian reports.
The report comes as oil pollution forced neighboring Peru to declare an environmental state of emergency in its northern Amazon rainforest.
Ecuador owed China more than $7 billion more than a tenth of its GDP as of last summer.
In 2009 China began loaning Ecuador billions of dollars in exchange for oil shipments. It also helped fund two of the country's biggest hydroelectric infrastructure projects, and China National Petroleum Corp may soon have a 30 percent stake in a $10 billion oil refinery in Ecuador.

"My understanding is that this is more of a debt issue it's because the Ecuadoreans are so dependent on the Chinese to finance their development that they're willing to compromise in other areas such as social and environmental regulations," Adam Zuckerman, environmental and human rights campaigner at California-based NGO Amazon Watch, told the Guardian.
The seven indigenous groups who live on the land are not happy, especially because last year a court ruled that governments must obtain "free, prior, and informed consent" from native groups before approving oil activities on their indigenous land.
"They have not consulted us, and we're here to tell the big investors that they don't have our permission to exploit our land," Narcisa Mashienta, a leader of Ecuador's Shuar people, said in a report.
Dan Collyns of The Guardian reports that "indigenous people living in the Pastaza river basin near Peru's border with Ecuador have complained for decades about ... pollution," which has been caused by high levels of petroleum-related compounds in the area. The Argentinian company Pluspetrol has operated oil fields there since 2001.

Ultra rich people can afford to live lavishly underground when the shit hits the fan so they don't give a shit about the planet if they can make a dime.

But he is right. Look how much money the big environemntal organisations have. But most of the money end in the pockets of (corrupt) governments and in the pockets of the managers. The same happens in other counbtries, depending of money from China. Big infrastructurual projects they finance. They give the money and workers, the country/city pays the Chinese back (if they can). And else you see what could happen. Here also, big highways, new harbours and new railways (to a Uranium mine). Good luck with that, in 15 years this will be a no-go area.

While he is right, I agree with you. The whole situation pisses me off to no end.

If not our children, our grandchildren are going to live in hell. We're passing along an enormous pile of shit that is only getting worse.

I'll bet people 20 years ago said that too -- although we do have some shit going on these days that the past can't compete with.

Visit Ecuador before the sale goes through. Sad to hear about this. They have no idea what is coming...Maybe someone from Ecuador should take a boat ride down the Yellow River.

Yes, but at some point it will all come to a head. Humans can't continue their path of destruction forever.

$7 billion.

In the big picture, that's not that much money. Bill Gates could make a few phone calls rounding up his buddies to pay off that debt. Seems like a much better bang for his charity dollars.

Which explains why they are building a canal across Nicaragua; they won't have to bother with Panama.

Why would my grandchildren despise me?

Bunch of dirt poor hispanics in Ecuador selling to the Chinese who don't give a fuck.

They should despise the Ecuadorian and the Chinese govt.'s for this one.

Or maybe we could send the U.S. military in and stop it?

Hell...think of how much pollution we've thrown up in the air in just the last two decades of blowing people up with bombs and missiles.

Also we pretty much wiped out the entire Vietnamese jungle with napalm during the Vietnamese War. Wasn't that an ecological disaster? Thousands of miles of jungle burnt. All the animals that lived there killed.

But somehow...it all grew back.

My point is that the U.S. govt. lives in a glass house. The govt. tries to preach it's holier than thou message to dirt poor countries about the environment...but we've been the worst abuser of the world's environment than anybody else. That is when it suits our govt.

When it doesn't? We suddenly get all "concerned".

Fucking politicians in Washington D.C. are no better than the tinpot dictators in South America.

Washington, DC is saying "Hey, we made our money by raping the environment...but YOU can't"

Yes, that is why i also think it is better to create an environmental company and buy it. Same in Borneo. A lot of rainforest disappears cause they need the wood and for 'sustainable''eco friendly Palm Oil and soja oil in the western world.

"Borneo's rainforests went to industrialized countries like Japan and the United States in the form of garden furniture, paper pulp and chopsticks. Initially most of the timber was taken from the Malaysian part of the island in the northern states of Sabah and Sarawak. Later forests in the southern part of Borneo, an area belonging to Indonesia and known as Kalimantan, became the primary source for tropical timber. Today the forests of Borneo are but a shadow of those of legend."

5 years ago I flew over the Malaysian part an it's amazingly sad to see how much is gone. I feel lucky that I was able to at least see and visit part of Borneo before all is gone.

I am honestly thankful that I never had kids. Why would anyone want to bring a child into this world? This planet is becoming a fucking toilet. What will it look like in 30 years? Do you really want to subject another human being to such misery? Non-existence is preferable to that shit.

Other countries may have raped the planet...but none of them are a hypocritical as our U.S. govt. is about it when dealing with other countries.

There is a coming oil boom for shale etc in the midwest and uppermidwest and northwest, Canada too. Lets see what happens. Fracking has already fucked up the ground water and caused constant earth tremors in souheast US and PA and West Virginia. So bad in Arkansas they had to stop.

Humans are cockroaches.

When I say our, I mean the collective our, of this generation/time period.

If it would help the planet to heal and regain growth. if animal species would stop going extinct at alarming rates, I would gladly return to a simpler time.
