What if John Lennon auditioned for "The View"?

Those loser 'judges' aren't even a speck on the legacy that man has left. This is an acute demonstration of the level of garbage we're subjected to in music these days.

What does his voice have to do with having a conversation with Barbara Walters and Whoopie?

LOL, I stand corrected. I meant "The Voice". My apologies. Caffeine hasn't kicked in yet.

I've actually often wondered, if say an unkown Elvis, Elton, Lennon, Freddie Mercury, or perhaps a Roger Daltry or Mick Jagger were to walk on one of these shows like American Idol or the Voice etc and audition, as complete unknowns never before heard or heard of, would the judges have the smarts to award them a ticket to the next round or would they pass saying they're too this or too that?

The OP is basically correct, although there's obviously a lot of heavy editing going on there. Had that actually occured that way I have no doubt they (the judges) would have thought he was an impersonator or something, and judged him on that basis.

But if we could somehow rewind time and bring singers like that on stage as they were when they were 20, or when they were as yet unkown.... how would they do?

And he's right, today's music by and large sucks. Very little actual rock or decent hard rock at the Grammy's, today they're basically the hip-hop & pop & rap crap awards. May as well change the name to that and be done with it.

Some of my favorite musical artists are great songwriters, even though they do no possess what would be considered a great singing voice. Neil Young instantly comes to mind:

Back before digital effects this was accomplished by lip-syncing to a slowed down version of the song, cutting out every so many frames then speeding it up to match the song.

Looks like the US version is pretty much the same as the Aussie one - hasbeen singers trying to relaunch their careers. Are the women's mags and tabloids also full of bullshit stories about how the judges are finding true love with each other?

The Dead Kennedys made a similar observation in the song Triumph of the Swill on their 1986 album Bedtime For Democracy. "If the Doors or John Lennon were getting started now the industry wouldn't sign them in a million years!"

i agree, their songs were more poignant then.

when i was growing up it was all different and nothing much has changed you still see it.

True.

One of my favorite Lennon tunes (I'm guessing John would never have been allowed to sing this song anyway, due to the lyrics):
