When I lived in Hawaii I accompanied visiting relatives to the Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor a number of times. Every time I was amazed at the amount of Japanese visitors. Always wondered what they were thinking.

Doesn't Hawaii have a relatively large indigenous Japanese population?

Everyone should know everything about 'Merica.

Yet many Americans can't even find or name most countries on a map...

It does. Hawaii's also the main destination for Japanese tourists and bus loads of tourist tours would stop at the memorial.

Is it normal for someone to be able to find and name every country? This is not static information.

The Japanese had been given an ultimatum by the U.S. to cease their activities in China and other parts of Asia or we would set up a naval block aide. Japan is an island and did not and does not have many natural resources of any kind. The ultimatum put the Japanese in a position with only two options to choose from. Cease their ativities immediately or attack the U.S. We suspected the later option would be their choce or at the least we had to prepare for the later option...thus the Philippines and Perl Harbor were ordered to go onto a wartime footing. We expected they would attack the Philippines first but they hit Perl Harbor first and the Philippines the following day. By the way the commander of Hawaii was punished for the piss poor job he did of putting Hawaii on a wartime footing.

Most countries yes. It's taught in school. Something Americans are not taught apparently.

I went on the Pearl Harbor tour and gotta say pretty strange when the tour guides and 80% of the tourists were Japanese.

Seeing that oil still coming up from the Arizona every minute or two and looking around at all the names on the wall will set you back.

It was all very strange for a lack of a better word.

2007or 8, it's no myth or legend as I went in expecting. I sat there and watched it for probably 20 minutes.

At the same time you get angry you look around and the Japanese are there and somber. Obviously not a good time for them either but really a strange overall atmosphere.

Every country? Probably not, but it's not all that unusual to be able to spot the main ones.

Moreover, for those interested in this sort of stuff it was relatively easy to guess the names of the countries that would emerge should the Soviet Union and/or Yugoslavia ever break up.

German reunification was a no-brainer as well.

Useless knowledge in one's day to day to existence, but fun to know for those of us with too much time to spare

The US was darn lucky the Japanese didn't press the attack and hunt down it's few carriers. It would have been a monstrous risk to know the attack would be coming and just let it happen with the assumption you could absorb the blow.

What really happened was a false sense of security based on the shallow depth of Pearl Harbor and the arrogance to believe the Japanese were not capable of such a successful attack. Do you know how many times in war an enemy has been underestimated? It still happens to this day.

It's probably no different than Americans visiting Vietnam or Japan (or any other place we bombed) and checking out their war memorials or museums. War memorials are huge tourist attractions all over the world.

So true.

I was surprised to learn that after WWII they shifted Poland to the West. Just learned this the other day. I never would have been able to determine what states would leave the USSR. I am always surprised when anyone chooses to leave a larger union. Size matters in politics and being small is almost never an advantage.

The best part is they flew over the oil reserves to attack the boats. If they had just shot the tanks of oil, the whole Pacific fleet would have been stranded.

That's why nearly all the pre ww2 buildings in western and northern Poland look just like the same in Germany and why Lviv (Lwow) in Ukraine looks like any other city in (what is now) eastern Poland.

Predicting what states would break away from the Soviet Union was as simple as looking at a early 1920's map of Europe. The same ones that broke away then did so again when next they had the chance.

Czechoslovakia split in two just before ww2 before doing so again in the 90's and Yugoslavia broke up along pretty much the same lines as it did in the 90's during ww2.

And not surprisingly, the same former Soviet bloc states that did well economically before ww2 are doing well now and vice versa.

History does tend to repeat itself.

Never underestimate the compelling power of local politics.
