Very mild weather in the UK - We haven't had a single frost which is amazing - The wind and rain have been amazing as well though - The wettest since records began...

Right now it's -38 w/windchill here.

Good news is it's supposed to be -10C by Wednesday. That'll be a cakewalk compared to this.

This has been the coldest winter here in I'd say a good 30 years.

What is that in F, because it was -30F with the wind whipping off the lake last night here in Western NY.

As you approach -40 the two scales converge. Basically it's all the same at that temp whether it's C or F. It's just COLD.

Easy. Thick winter coats (mine is rated to -60), a good tuque for your head and ears, a warm pair of long johns under your pants, a good block heater on your car (and remember to plug it in the night before) (an interior car warmer helps too), lined snow boots (again, mine are rated for -60), heavy mitts (mine are black leather w/rabbit fur lining)... then you just start your car, warm it up, and away you go, shopping or wherever.

Utilities here aren't allowed to shut people's heat/power off in winter. But come spring all bets are off. Homeless people tend to get their asses to a shelter in cold months or they freeze solid.

You'd think so, but no. My energy bill is under $170 per month, and that includes natural gas and electicity. Of course it helps that I spent nearly $30k about six years ago to have my house insulated (inner 'between' walls and exterior) and sided. I'm rated at R50 in the attic as well, having had about 2-3 feet deep of celulose fibre put there. I'm saving roughly $120 per month from what I used to pay before insulating.

Natural gas and hydro-electricity is pretty cheap here in Manitoba. Especially electric, since we're a major producer and exporter of it.

But really what's so hard to understand? 0 = freezing. +20 is room temperature, -20 is cold. + 30 is hot like Atlanta, and -30 is cold like a witch's tit.

Seems pretty simple to me. Simpler than F by a long shot.

We're having a mild winter, averaging around +20º C (70 degrees F) this week, even with a little rain (which we badly needed; hardly any rain this year).

Stay warm my friends!

Yeah the endless rain has kept temperatures up this year. Been great not having to scrape the ice off the car.

Pity for all the folks that got flooded though...

I was serious about that walk to the bank btw. I'm lacing up the all-weather cop/firefighter boots my brother gave me as we speak. They're like putting 4wdr's on your feet.

A little subzero walk, no big deal. It's a nice day out there today. :D

Well I made it. Was actually a nice walk to be honest, although my back and leg gave me some trouble. Nothing I didn't expect though.

I think I overdid it on the winter coat. I wore the -60 one, was a bit of an overkill. It's only about -18 out there this afternoon, and sunny, so I was actually sweating a bit.

Should have wore my GFY-adult.com leather bomber jacket with a GFY hoodie under it. :D

At least I didn't get run over by a snow plow. ha

Well, down here our weather means I need to avoid seeing my neighbors or they'll invite me to go check some crab traps and stop off at a little out island where we can set up some chairs and an umbrella so we don't get sunburned while drinking icy cold mojitos. And if I do that I'll never get any work done.

But here's a note from a Northern friend that you may appreciate...

My driveway is too damn steep to be able to get a car safely down it with all the ice we wound up with over the last few days. And the state highway department has issued a travel warning due to snow storms and bad road conditions. They suggest that anyone traveling in the current icy conditions should ensure that they have the following: Shovel, blankets or sleeping bag, extra winter clothing including coats, hat and gloves, water, 24 hours worth of food, deicer, rock salt, flashlight with spare batteries, road flares or reflective triangles, 5-gallon gas can, first aid kit and booster cables.

So I looked like an absolute idiot when I got on the bus this morning.

(yeah, I know, go fuck myself )

.

This just in: Canadians fed up with winter… we’ve got bad news:

The Weather Network has released its spring outlook and they’re expecting a slow start. They say winter will linger in most communities for several more weeks. Most Canadians will have to wait until mid-April for consistently nice spring weather.

@Simon -- man you don't know the fun you're missing up here.

And yes, it's pretty nuts to go driving outside of town anywhere far without some tools and provisions in the car, like a blanket, candles, A SHOVEL, maybe some energy bars, etc. But I suppose the same could be said for anyone going boating on the ocean, probably a good idea to have some emergency items on board there as well, yes?

It's going to -13 today, I think another walk is in order today since it's so nice.

Another 5-10 cm of snow fell overnight and this morning. Light, fluffy, fairly easy to shovel..

but I'm running out of room for it.

More snow fell here overnight. For the 3rd morning this week I had shovelling to do.

Funny thing is, in the past 2 days more snow fell here than that entire snowstorm that shut down half the SE seaboard of the USA, including the entire state of Georgia. About twice as much in fact. What did Winnipeggers do after the snow here? We brushed off our cars and drove to work.

Or in my case drove to the bank, the market, and my massage therapy appointment. :D

Why? How could we just go about our business when a lesser storm shut down 1/4 of the US? Simple. Like any good Canadian city Winnipeg is armed with a battalion of graders, plows, front-end loaders and dump trucks. Thousands of them. But not only that, we have sanding trucks, thus we can actually drive on our roads after smaller snow dumpings like we've seen this week. We know what we're doing when it comes to winter.

Now if you'll all excuse me my shovelling is done and I'm about to head out. More deals out there I want to take advantage of. Enjoy your suntanning or whatever it is you Southerners are doing these days.
