the giants in noahs ark

seems I saw somebody mention there were no giants in the flood and boat story... turns out there were...

The term "Nephilim" occurs just twice in the Hebrew Bible, both in the Torah. The first is Genesis 6:1?4 NAS, immediately before the story of Noah's ark:

Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose. Then the LORD said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years." The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.

The second is Numbers 13:32?33 NAS, where the Twelve Spies report that they have seen fearsome giants in Canaan:

So they gave out to the sons of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, "The land through which we had gone, in spying it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants; and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great size. There also we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim); and we became like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.

The nature of the nephilim is complicated by the ambiguity of Genesis 6:4, which leaves it unclear whether they are the "sons of God" or their offspring who are the "mighty men of old, men of renown". Richard Hess in The Anchor Bible Dictionary takes it to mean that the nephilim are the offspring,[11] as does P. W. Coxon in Dictionary of deities and demons in the Bible.[12]

Proper giants wouldn't drown in a flood. Why would they need to be on the ark?

In that other thread, I hadn't seen the movie so I didn't weigh in, but I suspected that's what they were. I just watched the movie (it was pretty bad) and I agree that this was likely the writer's take on the Nephilim.

However, my understanding is that the Nephilim were the offspring between angels and human women and were inherently violent. Their proliferation was the reason for the flood in the first place. Obviously, the writers (one of which was also the director and producer) exercised some artistic license.

My question would be more like that how everyone didn't just die to inbreeding? Every creature descending from that boat ride would be so inbred that we would have heads sticking out of our asses.

Read the movie novelization for it goes into more detail about the giant rock-like Watchers. They were originally creatures of light that originally helped humans. A good article about them can be found at Let?s Talk About ?Noah?: Those Giant ?Watchers? Actually Have an Ancient History. You can also do a search for Noah Watchers for more.

You raise a good point, and one similar to those raised by atheists which ironically require a fundamentalist interpretation of the Bible. The story of Noah is not unique, in that other religions have similar accounts of a human being warned of a coming flood and being tasked with building an ark (Gilgamesh, Deucalion, etc.) Just as the bible does not say that Adam and Eve were the only humans created, merely the first, I don't think the story of Noah excludes the possibility of more than one ark.

I studied these questions as part of my fundamentalist upbringing, the reason is that the birth defects resulting from inbreeding are caused by generations of cumulative genetic defects that require mating with a dissimilar DNA chain in order to suppress. When the human race was only a few generations old, and atmospheric radiation was low enough to allow lifespans close to a millennium, genetic mutation was minimal so this was not a problem.

that sounds weird - you either accept science or religion - but explaining a fairy tale with science while ignoring the part of science that is evolution...

And inconsistencies in the bible surprise you? You are over the age of twelve?

Despite them possibly being referred to as Nephilim in the movie, the giants in the movie have nothing to do with the Nephilim mentioned in the Old Testament. In the movie they were fallen angels who who had become entangled in the physical world and cursed to wear the earth that they loved so much as bodies that weighed them down. I am not aware of any such tradition in Christian or Hebrew mythology. Muslim mythology has a few references to non-human beings that can mate with humans, such as Genies, etc. but I am not well informed on that. The Biblical Nephilim were the offspring of Angels (sons of God) who impregnated human women.

I believe the entire Bible, and I agree with this assessment; if The Bible doesn't explain why something happened, we shouldn't speculate with extra-Biblical information.

I don't know about that, the question was how do people who believe that justify it scientifically - so that's how. As far as the relationship between science and fairy tails, it's a closer relationship than you think. Giant Squid were considered mythical creatures not long ago. Much of our technology would have been considered magic a few hundred years ago.

To me the bible is just a book, it's filled with contradictions
I recently saw the movie, it was OK, but I expected more from Russel Crow

You have no belief, which is apparent in your rejection of Proverbs 3:5-6:

Quote:
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.

And who was Cain's wife, his sister? Cain was Eve's son. Eve was the mother of all mankind (supposedly).

Incest wasn't forbidden until the time of Moses; so yeah, Cain had sex with his sister.

Incest wasn't forbidden until the time of Moses; so yeah, Cain had sex with his sister.
I am glad my lineage climbed down from the trees then -- there were lots of us

But an incestuous lineage does explain a lot of things about the religious fanatics throughout all of time.

That said, it is either one or the other path ... Nephilim literal translation is ''fallen men" from the original Hebrew -- that could refer to a lot of things. Maybe, it's our tribe fallen from the trees

Some believers say Nephilim is the offspring of Cain and his incestuous relationship in the beginning -- a race of birth defects? That is where the internet trolls descend from maybe
