Crowdfunding appeal for indy media at 2015 industry shows

Here's the Go Fund Me page for contributing to our efforts to cover the early 2015 online adult entertainment shows: Cover the 2015 Adult Industry Shows by Soren C. Sorensen - GoFundMe

We are working a polished announcement and press kit, so if you would like to write a testimonial about the value of this coverage to the community and public at large, hit me up.

Also, of course, share the link widely and contribute what you can! Thanks!

Well, one good reason is having video of the legal panels if you miss them, or want to share that knowledge and advice with colleagues and co-workers who don't even go to the shows... a good example would be this clip on FTC regulation of adult dating sites and fake profiles: Internext 2014 Workshop: Regulating Adult Sites through Consumer Protection (part 1) - YouTube

seriously - if you think that is something people want make it a business like JFK - if people think it's worthwhile they read/watch it and you can sell advertising

but asking to crowdfund your Vegas trip is just hilarious

JFK is alright, but he takes stills of the panels, not substantive notes on the subjects presented. Engaged journos help tease out details, tell stories and can reach larger numbers of folks interested in the industry.

We do make a tiny bit here and there from affiliate links on some sites we embed the more entertaining segments, but getting upfront funds to cover the shows will mean we can provide media that has some integrity and independence from people who would pay for equivalent services from a PR outfit.

Indeed! the SEO/SEMs that are worth a quarter a dozen call themselves "inbound marketers" and then there are some that call themselves "Google".

It's quite the ecosystem. Newspapers and media are being bought by outfits like Google or are increasingly beholden to them to keep the lights on. Indy journalism and citizen media, expert blogs, etc. are probably less constrained by market forces, and at times are held in esteem by consumers... who share similar interests.

As far as established media at the shows, I think you mostly see reporters from local Las Vegas papers who like the "tee hee, porn comes to town story". They then can sell you folks google adwords traffic back next to those stories about you.

Journos in town and still stuck after CES, or maybe in town for the SHOT show queue up and get AVN press passes, but how many sit through the panels and report how FTC regulations on porn might also effect outdoor mags and firearms publications, online marketplaces for police and military hardware?

Actually quite a few do , as does AVN and XBIZ has their own coverage as well. FUBAR works with both of them, as well as European publications. Best of luck with your venture

And good luck to, you, too!

I like JFK and see him doing his thing at many of the same events, he has apparently more access, but is not press, per se. Obviously if you look at my youtube I do more than just adult, and a whole lot that is focused on the politics and environment of the Upper Midwest and I'd love to do more on pure tech, network neutrality, follow and cover the telekom and internet shows like IETF, ICANN and NANOG.

If you look at the stats on my youtubes, the videos with adult industry lawyers and congress critters get about 1% of the views of an interview with a starlet or femdom performer, or a good protest clip. The youtube is fairly representative of the sort of content that we put up on cable television here, too, but often shorter form.

On the blogs, I've sometimes pushed back at conservatives that call for censoring the Net "to protect kids" in Northwoods newspapers, e.g. How to live skillfully in a sexy culture and a harsh climate?

I have been seriously confused by industry media, like XBiz's reliance on & linking to an industry enemy (torrentfreak) for news on adult entertainment legal battles against pirates (they do media advocacy for pirate sites!) and occasionally their reaction to my pieces (e.g. this one, on framing Measure B.).

AVN folks, like Tom Hymes, seem to appreciate what we do with video of panels and coverage on the various blogs. We have press passes for the upcoming AVN shows in January 2015...

Here's the first of our big endorsements or testimonials. Dr Chauntelle is great, if you are headed to the shows, you should try to attend panels she organizes and moderates, even if we might have video of them if this crowdfunding appeal works:

Quote:
@Seksi / Seksi, Inc's work at adult entertainment industry trade events is invaluable. They provide high-quality direct renderings of panels and events and conduct insightful interviews with important members of the community. Footage of this nature is important for industry members who are unable to attend in person and, more importantly, for the wider world. Their footage contributes accurate information to larger cultural conversations regarding adult entertainment, which is incredibly powerful and significant.

As a sociologist and public scholar, I greatly appreciate the work they do and the social justice-minded spirit with which they are committed to it

- Dr. Chauntelle Tibbals, Sociologist

@drchauntelle, chauntelletibbals.com
Please contribute if you can, and if your budget is tight, you can still help by sharing the link widely on the net, and perhaps personally with those you think benefit most from our coverage. The link again to the crowdfunding appeal is here: Cover the 2015 Adult Industry Shows by Soren C. Sorensen - GoFundMe

I got a pledge today that makes this campaign break even, all of the advertising used to launch it will have been paid for... we engaged a few thousand people in meat space with handbills and posters in Minnesota, and lots of media in Los Angeles and NYC by social media, as well as women on facebook between the ages of 18-25 who like "adult entertainment"

My youtube channel statistics say we had just over 9,000 views last month and more than 10,400 minutes of viewing... during this period of promoting the crowdfunding campaign to make more.

One of the funny things is that serious political people who have kicked in have expressed an interest in anonymizing their donations or paying cash, like covering the adult industry is a dangerous and rebellious thing to do, like they are buying a mimeograph machine and paper to foment some sort of velvet revolution in Czechoslovakia in 1989.

Maybe it is that bad - maybe free speech is that vulnerable in America today...
