Taken by itself alone, you would be right. But republicans / conservatives in office as a whole, are going out of their way to squash science. James Inhofe and Ted Cruz are just examples.

Pretend you are independent and still vote Republican or Democrat. Personally I rarely vote "for" any specific politicians, but rather against whom I don't want in office. When all the options are shit, it's best to at least block the worst of them..

Except that it isn't. The US is way behind other countries on all kinds of things. Conservatives are lying to themselves and many of them are so pig headed that they won't even consider alternative ideas.

The foundation of US political system is somewhat flawed. That system favours two party; and once in power, neither will do anything to change the system. Changing it would be like waiting for dictator to step out from power. It happens, but likehood is not that great. Especially as these dictators have the monetary and also other support of US business life and most other organizations. Ruling with nearly impunity.

It's always weird watching the über bitter & terminally angry homeless guy who lives in his vehicle, ceaselessly arguing angrily that "the other side" is angry.

It's a very sad way to go through this very short life. Stumbling around Seeing the world through a haze of hyper-tension and confusion, unable to even form meaningful bonds and relationships with other people... unless it's to blindly attack "the other team".

very true - we will all die - our anger probably won't matter - the people we help and care for will. I really have to work on that - I just wrote it and I have a hard time living it

It's always weird watching you be so angry all the time with nothing of any substance to say. You never have anything to add to any of these topics other than to attack those evil liberals. How does it feel to sit around GFY all day adding nothing to any conversation and to be trolled by the guy whom travels in his van?

I'm not sure if using politicians and their fake "anger" has anything to do with real people and their happiness or unhappiness.

I mean, I could easily troll the fuck out of you guys with videos of Hillary Clinton doing her "Shrillary" act screaming and acting crazy. Or I could post up pictures of Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi with their old (ancient) faces frowning.

But it's too easy.

Instead, I just opted to quote a few of you guys. It has always appeared to me that when people get defensive over their politics it always comes off as bitter and unhappy.

Using that criteria...we all come across that way, especially when name-calling using cherry picked examples to try and generalize half the U.S. population.

You guys know it's not that simple.
Some people are "conservative" financially. Which in 2015 means that they believe every individual should pay their own way and work hard. And those same people can be ULTRA-liberal socially beyond anything that any Democrat politician would ever be able to fathom.

Yeah, there are some ultra-religious social "conservatives" in the Republican Party. And yes, there are some ultra-socialists fiscal "liberals" in the Democrat Party.

I don't think either of those two extremes really describes PEOPLE in general in the U.S.

Politicians pander to both extremes because extremists DO vote. Whereas most "normal" people aren't that anal about voting...and extremist's votes every time because they have an agenda to push.

So we get politicians on the "right" acting like jackasses, and politicians on the left acting like jackasses. All trying to get that "extreme" vote without going too far and pissing off the "Middle".

The only thing I ever respond to is your hostile intolerance towards any view that differs from your own. I don't need to address your cut and paste BS, line by line for that.... Just so you can google up a retort.

You imagine that everyone is angry to rationalize your own insane behavior...it's how you've convinced yourself that you are both victim and martyr as opposed to facing the truth of your insanity.. I am far from angry and there is nothing a homeless person could say to effect me one way or the other. Right now you are trying to shower in the bathroom in a public library and I am out with friends watch a couple others we know fight MMA.

You make X amount of $$$.

You keep X because it is yours.

Gov makes Y amount of $$$.

Gov keeps Y because it is theirs.

Y was generated in proportion to X.

Without X, Y would never exist.

Y is and was never your money.

Conservatives believe Y is their money.

This makes Conservatives angry.

That doesn't sound quite right.

I pay taxes based on my income; or more exactly the tax amount is based on my income (whether I pay it or not). I pay taxes with my own money; paying it with someone else's money would be robbery.

His point is that you wouldn't make any money without some structure. You pay for that structure. So taxes are more of a necessary expense that an necessary evil.

The fact that conservatives "think" they are happier makes sense. They are less questing and open. The fact that liberals are happier makes equal sense for the same reasons.

Would you rather have been Hugh Hefner or the Pope to use extreme examples?

happy people go around all the time saying how unhappy other people are, based on which 'side' those other people are or aren't on.

All the happy people I know do this, the world is full of examples of happy people doing this, this thread by it's very existence proves that happy people must be those on the left 'side'.

I just commented that tax thing, it was not some anti-tax, more than pro-tax comment. I understand the role of taxes and I have nothing against the concept.

I don't care that much about this liberals vs conservatives; especially as in my country we don't have that kind of divide. Though some people are more liberal/conservative than others, but people don't really identify themselves that way around here. For example I am liberal and conservative if you want to put it that way. However that doesn't make much sense and I don't identify (or build identity) myself with those adjectives.

You just used two examples of people who are sort of like the majority of folks.

Hugh Hefner is a fiscal CONSERVATIVE and a social LIBERAL.

The Pope on the other hand is a fiscal LIBERAL and a social CONSERVATIVE.

That's really the way most people fit in this world. I think the actual extremists who go far left and far right don't represent the average person.
But they have a lot of power politically because they are so single minded about what they want to see done.

Kind of like the lady that lives in my gated community who walks the neighborhood and "inspects" everyone's yards. If somebody has a leaf out of place on a tree, she runs to report it to the Home Owners Association. She simply has nothing better to do with her life and is obsessed with putting herself in everyone else's business.

You know the type.
Those are the kind of people on the far spectrum of the left and right politically.
They are the ones who sit down and write long letters to their representatives. They are the ones who print up fliers and pass them out. They are the ones who try to organize other crazies to vote in a block.

Makes them a powerful force in politics.

So it causes greedy power-hungry politicians (which would be ALL of them) to pander to these people on the left and the right.
So you get Ted Cruz & Trump types on one side, and Pelosi & Reid types on the other.

The problem with that Robbie, is there are no fiscal conservatives or social liberals in Washington. I've never had any issues with fiscal conservatives much the same as social liberals, but name any whom are in office, let alone a mix of the two..

There aren't any.

On either "side".
There USED to be the Northeastern Republicans (the Rockefeller Republicans as there were called). They were socially liberal and fiscally conservative.
And there USED to be the "Blue Dog" Democrats who were socially liberal and fiscally conservative.

Both parties have pushed them aside. The reason? Because that crazy minority of people I mentioned in my previous post who are organized politically "go after" these "moderates" viciously during elections.

They want them gone and replaced with politicians who will act as if they will do what these crazies want.

I don't really think that Boehner, Cruz, McConell, Pelosi, Reid, etc. even believe half of the shit they say or do. They just do it to keep getting voted in to power over and over and over.

I mean, look at how many times the "religious right" has gotten their guy in to the Presidency...and yet none of their insanity ever comes to pass.
Hell, remember when Bush took office and named Ashcroft as his attorney general?

We all thought it was the end of sex, porn, and anything fun. lol

But nothing came of it. It never does.

When Reagan was President, I felt the country was actually more socially liberal. I was living off the strip in Ft. Lauderdale a block from the beach. And the girls were wearing tiny string thongs and no tops...just little decals over their nipples.

Then in the 1990's when Pres. Clinton was in office...it seemed the country got conversely more "conservative" socially.
I was living in Myrtle Beach, SC then. And suddenly, over most of the country, local govt's started passing laws making it ILLEGAL for a girl to wear a thong on the beach!!!

My girlfriend at the time was a stripper at Thee DollHouse in Myrtle Beach and she and her co-workers would wear shirts that said "I'm nude, not lewd" that a local shop made to protest the new law.

These days, when you go to the beach...you RARELY see girls in thongs anymore because most places have outlawed them.

It's weird. It's almost like whichever party is in power usually reflects more on the fiscal mood of the country and seems to be he opposite of the social climate.

For instance, we have President Obama in office. You would think the country would be feeling more liberal.
But in California (of all places...not Alabama, not Georgia...but freakin' California!), the govt. there is waging war on the porn industry!

And you would think that it would be Republicans trying to run our lives...yet, people can't smoke in public (for health reasons)...and now you have "liberal" politicians banning vaping in public too!

Then you got a guy like Bloomberg. Started off as a Dem, switched to Republican to win votes. Then he switched back and forth a couple of times between affiliations (whatever served his purposes to get him elected).
And this "liberal" guy creates a law that tells people how large of a soda they can buy!

It's insane.

The banning of vaping isn't about public health, it's about cigarette lobbyist and their money. The cig companies are trying to kill their new found competition.

The fact that conservatives "think" they are happier makes sense. They are less questing and open. The fact that liberals are happier makes equal sense for the same reasons.

Would you rather have been Hugh Hefner or the Pope to use extreme examples?

I don't care that much about this liberals vs conservatives; especially as in my country we don't have that kind of divide. Though some people are more liberal/conservative than others, but people don't really identify themselves that way around here. For example I am liberal and conservative if you want to put it that way. However that doesn't make much sense and I don't identify (or build identity) myself with those adjectives.
My point is that dispensing with the notion that tax is your money that you parted with is a step towards living a life free of all this Conservative Versus Liberal bullshit.

And the govt. doesn't want people vaping because it's costing them millions of dollars in lost tax revenue since the govt. has imposed a HUGE sin tax on every pack of smokes (that's why a pack of cigarettes costs up to $7 these days).

Just goes to show ya that the govt. isn't really concerned about your health...they use that as a justification to reach into people's pockets when they buy cigarettes. And now they don't want to lose that revenue.

So now they are coming up with scare tactics to convince folks that water vapor is as dangerous as cigarette smoke and they start banning it everywhere.

No matter how you look at it...it's people in govt. thinking they can run our lives.

Absolutely correct. Government, especially at the Federal level is just a big snowball going down an endless mountain. Just gets bigger and bigger and is completely out of control.
