new development:

when they investigated his home they found a sick certificate from his doctor - torn into pieces - for the day of the crash

so it looks like his doctor declared him unfit for flying, he saw his career in danger and thought "fuck it, let's end this"

I hope he burns in hell for this. I just don't understand people who commit suicide this way or by jumping in on-coming traffic, or hang themselves in public. So selfish.

i wonder what possibilities there are to find out when something is so fundamentally wrong with someones mind

because when you hear people talking about him that know him from the past, no one mentioned anything unusual - and he also passed all medical tests

i'm afraid you can never 100% rule out that a nutjob like this slips through

I disagree.

Planes change altitude as part of routine flight. Usually no one notices these changes. I usually don't; I am usually wrapped up in a movie doing everything I can to block out all of the noises from the plane.

Most likely they knew something was wrong in the final few minutes when the pilot was trying to hack down the cockpit door with axe.

Where did you read that the doctor declared him unfit for flying? It's a "sick note" as far as I know, which could mean any of 100 different things.

speculation from my part - his sick note was from 16th to 29th and he tore it apart and never told his employer about it.

he had no obvious injury and if he had the flu and fever I guess someone would have noticed

i assume you only kill yourself and 149 other people when you receive really really bad news

I'm inclined to agree with you, but that's a whole lot of assumptions.

also interesting - how does the altitude setting of the autopilot work?

Quote:
The MODE switch would be turned clockwise to 1000 (if it wasn't already selected), the ALT dial would be turned counter clockwise 2 times, landing on 13008ft during the first twist, then 100ft on the second. No doubt this is being replicated in a simulator somewhere.

You turn the knob till desire altitude, after 5 to 6 sec´s A/P will accept input and start descent or climb according to new setting.

For faster A/P response after desire setting is set button can be pressed so immediately A/P assumes new setting

Do you know any one that has suffered from depression?

If mental illness did not have such a stigma attached to it, is their more of a chance he could have received medical help?

Is blaming and accusing people or compassion and help more likely to avoid a repeat in the future?

Actually contrary to popular belief most suicides do not leave a note.

Don't be silly now, doors were reinforced and made that they could not be forced because of "the war on Terror".

Before the pilot could have forced the door without problem.

people with clinical depression still make a lot of very rational decisions - they are not raging crazy

most of their suicides result from not wanting to be a burden to others - mostly family

and they usually not kill other people in the process

but the victims in this case are the 149 other passengers and crew - not that guy that crashed the plane.

"usually"

If he had survived the crash and was charged would he have a mental illness defence?

I think you will find that people who are mentally ill are by definition not capable of being innocent or guilty.

I do not see where you desire to blame him, an ill person, gets us.

He did receive medical help, but outside of his profession.

From reading the main pilots forum, it's clear that much of that industry just doesn't get it. Anything irrational goes against the grain of being a pilot, and thinking like a pilot. People try to discuss mental health issues, but they're shouted down as being full of shit.
