A lawyer representing the Harris family says the answer is simple.

Bates paid big money to play a cop in his spare time, attorney Daniel Smolen says, but he didn't have the training to handle the job.

It's a claim that Bates' attorney and the Sheriff's Office deny, arguing that he was experienced and qualified for the role. His donations of equipment to the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office and his friendship with Sheriff Stanley Glanz, they say, have nothing to do with the April 2 shooting.

But as Bates faces a second-degree manslaughter charge, analysts say the case raises serious questions about who's policing America's streets, how and why.

I just watched the move Ride Along with Ice Cube and Kevin Hart.. Funny movie.. Maybe they are thinking of having a part 2 with Ice Cube and a old man like Sylvester Stallone?

Pretty fucked up they gave a 73 yr old a real gun but still doesn't change the fact he took someones life..

My town has a reserve cop who is 68 years old. He has been a reserve for about 15 years and started doing it after he retired from his previous job. These days he helps out around the office and does some general stuff for them, but he no longer carries a gun and doesn't go out with the officers. He just enjoys doing it, but knows he is not fit to go out and potentially get in a life and death situation.

It sounds like this guy should have done the same thing.
