![]() One woman's snack break turned sour this week when she reached into a bag of grapes and felt the bite of a venomous black widow spider. The 21-year-old Vermonter survived the ordeal, but some people who heard her story have since sworn off the fruit. But before you give up grapes forever, experts say there are a few things you should know about the (woefully misunderstood) black widow spider. Black Widows Bad Rap: 4 Misconceptions About the Spider - Yahoo News Black widow spider found in bag of grapes in Commerce Township - WXYZ.com

Latrodectus Pallidus is more commonly known as the white widow spider. Unlike others in the widow spider Lactrodectus genus, the white widow spider exhibits an inate structured intelligence that measures at the highest scale for insects, second only to the praying mantis!
The white widow's venum is the strongest of the entire Arachnida class of insects, let alone the Latrodectus genus, and toxicology studies have reported that the venom of the white widow is similar in structure to L. tredecimguttatus. |

I know right!? Serendipity that one of the most intelligent, poisonous spiders is the White Widow, and it's located in Africa and highly feared by natives, while being honored and revered for it's healing powers. They say if you put one in hot water and drink, you will become smarter.

When I lived in Northern California, I got use to them. When I spent several years working for Coca Cola on vending machines, I would see all sorts of spiders in them.
Wolf Spiders would scare me a little, fucking things are huge. ![]() Only saw a couple Brown Recluse spiders while working there, they I think are about the most dangerous spiders in the US

You are correct sir, although I do not suffer from arachnophobia, I still have a healthy respect for anything that can bite me. We had one in my house once and scared the shit out of the kids, I swatted it with my hand, then cleaned up the mess. They're not poisonous. About 3/4 the size of a tarantula and yes they can bite, but are not very aggressive.

I've always had these in and around my house in LA. Had one BW with a body the nearly the size of a quarter and legs about an inch long living in my garage. I hated killing it but the ex-wife insisted. It took a while to finally get her since everytime she relized there was a light on or even a flashlight near she retreated into her den.
Last year I turned around in my kitchen to find a BW scurrying across the floor. That was a bit startling since I have never seen one out of its web. She got picked up and moved outdoors. If you're in Cali expect to have BWs on your property. |
