Pope Francis? climate change encyclical expected to make global impact

Pope Francis’ much anticipated encyclical about climate change will make a major impact throughout the Roman Catholic Church and beyond, propelled by the severity of the issue and the pope’s personal popularity

?When the future of the planet is at stake, there are no political frontiers, barriers or walls behind which we can hide to protect ourselves from the effects of environmental and social degradation,?

According to Mary Evelyn Tucker, who teaches in Yale?s schools of Forestry and Environmental Studies, Divinity and Law,

?This is the most important thing that will happen in our lifetime on the environment.?

The biggest impact Americans can have on the environment right now is insisting all imported products must be manufactured with the same EPA laws our own manufacturers must abide by.

It's ridiculous to import products that cause pollution levels in other countries we don't allow in our own.

plenty of Americans are going to listen to the Pope about this.

i think also that Americans can also embrace alt energies more and be more conscientious re: our own pollution, that sort of energy translates and reverberates.

the Church and the Pope embracing stopping climate change alters the context to be a moral issue, not a science issue, which i think is a good thing since politics has invaded and disrupted the effort.

most realists agree that population is a serious issue in regards to climate change.

the pope addresses this

Catholics don't have to breed 'like rabbits', says Pope Francis and should instead practise responsible parenting.

It's too bad that it's all empty and false rhetoric. The future of the planet is not at stake and all he is doing is dooming millions upon millions of people around the world to energy poverty. Trillions will be spent trying to reduce harmless CO2 to no effect while real pollution and real environmental damage continues unabated.

The pope should just keep his mouth shut about climate change and stick to church business.

So far this Pope is turning out to be the coolest and smartest of all popes. I'm glad he is doing something positive about the problem. 1.2 Billion people is a shitload of people to influence - I hope he can make a difference.

Cool and smart because he believes in your pet cause?

He is not doing anything positive at all. He is dooming people to poverty and deflecting attention away from real crises.

I hope that people will think for themselves and not suffer with appeal to authority as you. Just because he has a bigger soapbox than anybody else doesn't mean he is right about anything.

It is a testament to mankind's inevitable doom that we give any relevance to this charlatan, his cult and all the rest of cults of death like them as well.

These assholes should be homeless instead of living in palaces made with the centuries of blood of others and financed by ignorance and superstition.

That asshole should be sweeping the street in Rome instead of making statements about things he knows nothing about. He should stick to telling fairy tales to children.

It is religion that has taken mankind down this very path. Their insistence that we are somehow separated from the planet (because we are going to leave it when we die so who cares) and that we superior from the natural world so we can exploit it to the point of destruction.

Also, not to use common sense and limit the birth of the virus known as humans which has resulted in the overpopulation and now ultimately the destruction of the earth as we knew it...well done you fucking asshole! Not to worry that much however, it will keep on spinning long after our species is extinct.

FUCK HIM and all the ignorant superstitious FUCKS who give a FUCK what he has to SAY!

all propaganda aside - this is an excellent point

look at the pollution levels in China, India, Bangladesh - our greed for cheap crap kills their environment.

i was simply adding to the thread, using your comment as context. i wasn't trying to claim you were claiming you're better. i was going to dialogue with L-pink to mention the dirty coal in Euro, but decided to mention another angle on it all with his post.

Eastern Kentucky coal operators have a 7 billion dollar deal with India alone for coal. When it comes to the earths atmosphere does it really matter from where the coal was burned?

That's how i thought it applies in context to your first post. What's the point of getting Americans to stop buying shit from countries we sell shit tons of dirty coal to?

Passing tough and expensive environmental laws in the US them allowing products made by extreme polluters to be imported is plain crazy. If you want to sell goods to the US you should have to follow the same regulations we impose on ourselves otherwise what's the point?

The biggest impact we can quickly make on the environment is stopping wholesale pollution manufacturing the goods we import.

Yes, your pet cause of CO2 reduction. I don't see you campaigning against real environmental problems like deforestation. Speaking of deforestation here is a sample of what your pet cause gets us:

How Europe?s climate policies led to more U.S. trees being cut down

Quote:
Soaring demand for this woody fuel has led to the construction of more than two dozen pellet factories in the Southeast in the past decade, along with special port facilities in Virginia and Georgia where mountains of pellets are loaded onto Europe-bound freighters. European officials promote the trade as part of the fight against climate change. Burning ?biomass? from trees instead of coal, they say, means fewer greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
So because of simple minded people like yourself, who think that reducing CO2 is the be-all and end-all of sound environmental policy, the US and other more fragile areas are becoming increasingly deforested.

The crazy part of that is that deforestation will lead to more warming than increased CO2 will. Way to go.

The point is to reduce coal consumption as a whole. Using energy more efficiently means burning less coal regardless of the source.

Agreed. I wonder though how this could be done. If you add a tax to certain "dirty" products, you make them harder to sell (good) but you piss off the consumer. Maybe add some kind of import tax that the manufacturer has to pay? No idea...

Hi Eon,

Instead of assuming I'm somehow not concerned about deforestation, why not ask me? Don't be a Dynamo and make false statements based on false assumptions about me, please.

I absolutely love the forest. Here in Canada we're really lucky to be surrounded by some of those beautiful forests on the planet. My brother Steve who lives in Vernon, BC, sends me photos of forests that are being clear cut and it breaks my heart. It's a godamn tragedy what is happening in some parts of Canada, and even worse in other places on the planet.

A lot of the extra CO2 in the atmosphere comes from the burning of coal and fossil fuels, AND from burning other materials including wood.

I do not understand why European officials are promoting wood and pellets as "green" alternatives to the climate change crisis in the article you posted. It makes no sense to me. Maybe it was sold to them that way? Something seems very fishy.

Fortunately though it looks like its just dead wrong. The article you linked to also includes a link to this study: https://www.southernenvironment.org/..._hardwoods.pdf

Anyway look - I care about the environment. By burning less coal, gasoline, oil, trees, etc, we help keep the planet cleaner, the mean temperature where it should be, and all the ice just where it should be, and the sea level just where it should be too. This should not be a hard thing to do or even something to debate. The reason why it is hard to do and has become such a huge debate, is because certain special interests have made it controversial.

Peace.
