The biggest impact Americans can have on the environment right now is insisting all imported products must be manufactured with the same EPA laws our own manufacturers must abide by.

It's ridiculous to import products that cause pollution levels in other countries we don't allow in our own.

plenty of Americans are going to listen to the Pope about this.

i think also that Americans can also embrace alt energies more and be more conscientious re: our own pollution, that sort of energy translates and reverberates.

the Church and the Pope embracing stopping climate change alters the context to be a moral issue, not a science issue, which i think is a good thing since politics has invaded and disrupted the effort.

It's too bad that it's all empty and false rhetoric. The future of the planet is not at stake and all he is doing is dooming millions upon millions of people around the world to energy poverty. Trillions will be spent trying to reduce harmless CO2 to no effect while real pollution and real environmental damage continues unabated.

The pope should just keep his mouth shut about climate change and stick to church business.

So far this Pope is turning out to be the coolest and smartest of all popes. I'm glad he is doing something positive about the problem. 1.2 Billion people is a shitload of people to influence - I hope he can make a difference.

It is a testament to mankind's inevitable doom that we give any relevance to this charlatan, his cult and all the rest of cults of death like them as well.

These assholes should be homeless instead of living in palaces made with the centuries of blood of others and financed by ignorance and superstition.

That asshole should be sweeping the street in Rome instead of making statements about things he knows nothing about. He should stick to telling fairy tales to children.

It is religion that has taken mankind down this very path. Their insistence that we are somehow separated from the planet (because we are going to leave it when we die so who cares) and that we superior from the natural world so we can exploit it to the point of destruction.

Also, not to use common sense and limit the birth of the virus known as humans which has resulted in the overpopulation and now ultimately the destruction of the earth as we knew it...well done you fucking asshole! Eastern Kentucky coal operators have a 7 billion dollar deal with India alone for coal. When it comes to the earths atmosphere does it really matter from where the coal was burned?

Passing tough and expensive environmental laws in the US them allowing products made by extreme polluters to be imported is plain crazy. If you want to sell goods to the US you should have to follow the same regulations we impose on ourselves otherwise what's the point?

The biggest impact we can quickly make on the environment is stopping wholesale pollution manufacturing the goods we import.

The point is to reduce coal consumption as a whole. Using energy more efficiently means burning less coal regardless of the source.

Agreed. I wonder though how this could be done. If you add a tax to certain "dirty" products, you make them harder to sell (good) but you piss off the consumer. Maybe add some kind of import tax that the manufacturer has to pay? No idea...

Instead of assuming I'm somehow not concerned about deforestation, why not ask me? Don't be a Dynamo and make false statements based on false assumptions about me, please.

I absolutely love the forest. Here in Canada we're really lucky to be surrounded by some of those beautiful forests on the planet. My brother Steve who lives in Vernon, BC, sends me photos of forests that are being clear cut and it breaks my heart. It's a godamn tragedy what is happening in some parts of Canada, and even worse in other places on the planet.

A lot of the extra CO2 in the atmosphere comes from the burning of coal and fossil fuels, AND from burning other materials including wood.

I do not understand why European officials are promoting wood and pellets as "green" alternatives to the climate change crisis in the article you posted. It makes no sense to me. Maybe it was sold to them that way? Something seems very fishy.

Anyway look - I care about the environment. By burning less coal, gasoline, oil, trees, etc, we help keep the planet cleaner, the mean temperature where it should be, and all the ice just where it should be, and the sea level just where it should be too. This should not be a hard thing to do or even something to debate. The reason why it is hard to do and has become such a huge debate, is because certain special interests have made it controversial.
