I've never understood people who fly the flags of countries they've left behind. I understand you might be, for example, Puerto Rican, but.... Outside of your house you fly the flag of a country you left while not flying the flag of the country that has become your home.

Would I stay and fight for my country? It depends on the country. If you live in some shit hole country that has nothing to offer and limited potential, most likely not. You can spend the next twenty or thirty years of your life fighting to survive, and at the end of the day you will have never have known what it feels like to own a brand new car.

The Taliban had done to Afghanistan what IS have done to Northern Iraq and parts of Syria when a power vacuum occurred after the departure of the Soviets. This left the average citizen in the hands of violent radical extremists.

The "Rebel Fighters" in Iraq actually didn't hold of the Americans, all they did was make areas of northern Iraq and outer Baghdad unliveable, this was essentially the group that was called Al Qaeda in Iraq which has morphed into IS.

Refugees poured out of Afghanistan in the 1980's and refugees poured out of Iraq in the 90's and 2000's. Australia was one of many countries that took these refugees.

The average citizen has no means to stay and fight against such destruction.

Vietnam was won by a well organised guerrilla army backed by Soviet and Communist Vietnamese trained armies. The Vietnamese were extremely well trained in things like booby traps, sniper activities, purging villages using fire, flash strikes and rape as a weapon.

The reason America lost was, amongst other things, it thought carpet bombing would act as a viable response to these guerrilla tactics.

In Iraq and Afghanistan the fighters you speak of were assembled groups of well trained forces armed and trained by the USA and USSR in the first place. These forces were not average citizens fighting off oppressors, they were ruthless trained fighters with a fearless disregard for their own safety over their cause.

The average citizens, men included, fleeing Syria have no choice, what does someone with no combat training do ? Throw rocks at tanks ? Duck when a barrel bomb hurtles toward them and their family ?

Remember, Syria has been getting shredded by this war for years now. It's probably very likely that many and more of these people stayed as long as they could, possibly even fought some with what they had, and now see no other option than to get the hell out of there. Also, a lof of these refugees aren't even from Syria. Several of them have been spoken to directly by news media who were from all over, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.

The trek they're all on certainly looks like it would be no picnic. Thus I don't think I would fling the word 'coward' their way.

No they didn't start off as citizen groups and they didn't come out of thin air.

In Vietnam it wasn't villagers fighting the Vietnamese guerrilla war, it was trained fighters, the Việt Cộng who emerged out of the National Liberation Front who had been training for many years before the war in Vietnam reached any kind of flashpoint.

In Iraq and Syria it's not average citizens who became IS. It was formed out of the Jama'at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad. Which in turn consisted of fighters trained by both the US and the Soviet armies and advisors. Also armed by them. The human fodder joining IS from the West are trained to do one thing, strap on a vest of explosives or drive a truck full of explosives to their deaths.

I have knowledge of this stuff because I am currently in the middle of a degree in Security Terrorism and Counterterrorism at Murdoch University, my second course of University study in the area of International Relations.

It's clear you have a very simplistic view of this stuff, try to think about your home town being ripped apart by tanks, bombs, grenades, shoulder launched missiles and mines. Then add armies with traditional explosive and chemical weapons and as an average citizen you have no hope. You either stay and die, or flee and perhaps get somewhere safe if you are lucky.

No you have it completely wrong.. The U.S. Military kicked the Taliban's ass and ran them out of Afghanistan into Pakistan. George Bush and his neocon cronies then set their eyes on Iraq and never finished the job in Afghanistan.

His fumbling then allowed the Taliban to regroup and fight from within Pakistan.. Obama then started hitting them in Pakistan, but by then it was a much harder victory to win.

What the CIA/SecOps paired up with the Northen Coalition managed to due during the beginning of the Afghan war is likely one of the most widely unknown military victories of any modern area. The Bush admin completly fucked up that war due to them being typical neo-con asshats with no plan other than we will bring them freedom fries..

Yes the Taliban went to Pakistan to set up new training camps however they always had some kind of presence there.

Right now, as I type this, there are still Taliban fighters wreaking havoc all over Afghanistan.

Arguably the situation on the ground in most of the country (apart from Kabul) is worse than before the US and allies went in.
