i am curious tho, you do know they took him into a classroom with police, with no parental permission, no lawyer, and no rights for over a hour right?

Why did he blow off the school authorities? Which forced them to call the police?

Had the kid said he made a clock to make a clock, the police never would have been called.

Cry victim all you want. Explain the kids actions. And don't tell me he was scared. He was old enough to "build a clock," as so many love to be claiming right now, he was plenty smart enough to explain that he built a clock and if he didn't explain there would be repercussions.

If there is a kid in front of you with a device, regardless of what the device is, and he will not tell you what the device is and what it's for… how can you reasonably and responsibly say that it's not a situation for the police to be called? You have thousands of people in the vicinity, children, at risk. This is not a time to fuck around, especially in evil America with gun toting maniacs running everywhere (or maybe that's just a white redneck thing?) as non-Americans love to point out.

no schools offered him a scholarship based on the clock. that's what i'm saying. sure BO and others rushed to judgement about the genius of it all, and use him as a poster child for science and discovery, and i get that angle, but in the end, no MITs offered him a scholarship and that's because he simply took apart a clock. if he had done more, he would very easiky get a full ride at a cal tech or MIT, etc.

The only thing "genius" about him is the way he and his family manipulated everyone from the school, to the police, to the media, all the way to the president.
While it's true many people are quick to over react, there is not a whole lot of social inequalities when it comes to Americans compared to Canadians.

I agree the media fashioned this story into something it wasn't, and it quickly dissipated when the truth was finally revealed, but just because it happened here doesn't mean that other world media outlets didn't approach it in a very uneducated similar manner.
