Serious Questions for the OP

1. What languages do you code in ?

2. Do you use Unix command line tools ?

The reason I ask is that many developers these days use Macs, every developer conference I go to is mostly Mac users, it's rare to see a PC laptop amongst all the Macs.

It's not really about programming on the mac; I use a web server where the code is going to run. That's the definitive test; to make it run on the platform it has to run on.

I use every language ever invented and none of them do anything different that would be significant.
You might as well just ask me what type of latex paint I use on a wall.

At the developer conference :

Oh, I sooooooooo believe that because the money people they work for buy the mac for them because that's what they use.
Or, who wants to show up with a "cheap" computer and not look successful.

I didn't buy my mac; it was purchased for me so I would match.

Note : I made this thread because I hate the iMovie app with a passion; so it's not about me being a programmer.

Mac is style over substance.
It's also a cult.

To me a computer is about efficiency and getting shit DONE - then walking the fuck away from it. Macs are about spending as much time as you can sucked into the Apple Universe. No thanks.

I can't fathom what is going on either. We use both Mac and PC and in some cases they are hooked up to the same monitor with the same color profile loaded in both machines so it matches.

I can use pretty much either machine interchangeably, they both do the same things. The big advantage with the Mac is that if you are using an iPhone or iPad you have access to your text messaging through iMessage. As well you also have a native bash shell and can do ssh natively. Video rendering can be a bit faster on the Mac at times as well.

And oh yeah you don't get that weird feeling Windows is trying to spy on you and monetize your private data. That is the main thing that I dislike about Windows and Android. Anyways enjoy your computers.

When I worked at Apple, Terminal was disabled on all of the work computers. Anything you opened that used Terminal would open it, give a warning then close. Except /bin/bash, that stayed open for some reason..

Exact same experience here. Most of the developers I know all uses Macs.

My thoughts exactly. I was done with endless OS updates, pop-ups, security vulnerabilities, incompatibilities, slow boot times, blue screens of death and no support. I want computers that work, dammit!

If you spend so much on a Mac get parallels.

For $99 a year use parallels and run Linux, Windows, and other linux distros all at the same time. Even drag and drop.

Copy and OS multiple times, trash it, delete it, make another copy.

Same reason to use Vagrant (which works in tandem with virtual box) create a local virtual environment that you can run a specific kind of server. Whether it's a specific web technology or whatever.

Virtualbox works ok for linux distros but they aren't nearly as smooth, plus can't drop and drag.

I'm no purest. Most computers get the job done and that's all you need, as long as you don't go crazy on random installs and then don't know how to fix your computer.

Macs run smooth as everything is tuned on their devices between the software and hardware. Same reason why a Galaxy S5 has a 4 core processor running around 2.5 GHz with 2800 mAh battery that is only a little faster than a iPhone 5s that has a 1560 mAh battery and a dual core processor humming along around 1.4 GHz.

Most PCs are just slapped together, some hardware is better tuned when you buy it out of the store but I'm typing this on an iMac 2010 and it still runs great.

I use a Mac for software development because it's quite simply the best platform for coding and development.

It's a native UNIX machine, you can drop straight into bash and have the whole of UNIX at your fingertips. If you need extra packages you can install Homebrew and pull in any packages you want

Homebrew ? The missing package manager for OS X

I use Sublime Text 3 & Atom for text editors.

Git command line tools and the Git GUI

If you run VirtualBox and Vagrant then you don't need to leave your machine to do development, you can fire up whatever native platform you are developing web apps for right on your machine.

You can test all your code locally - regardless of where your end product will go - set up a dev server on Digital Ocean or Vultr etc and quick deploy git changes to that on your dev branch for immediate remote testing and auto deploy your master branch to a production server.

That's why I use a Mac, because it's quite simply the most efficient tool there is to get shit done. Development on a Windows machine, especially web development sucks.

Parallels is great when you want to fire up a desktop OS and either integrate it or isolate it from your Mac for work or just testing.

The beauty of VirtualBox & Vagrant is that you can have your entire codebase local and test it as if it were on a production server. So you can have a Centos 6 Instance using CPanel and your code base on your local machine and test that your App will run properly in that environment. Or run Ubuntu, Fedora or whatever other production environment while keeping your code local.

In my whole life i have never even thought about calling some support phoneline when i had PC issues. That's what the elderly do (85+) and chicks with an IQ of 70.

But none of that has to do with me hating the iMovie app bad enough to rant in this thread.
The only people who brought up programming only did so because they know I'm a programmer.
I never said programming was a problem.

I was trying to make a video for a job application and porn kept getting stuck to it.

If you can't use a mac and within the first 10 mins realise the huge advantages, the main one efficiency, then perhaps you need to look at something more appropriate to your aptitude.

I've trained their tech support back in the day. They seriously just go to support.apple.com and read off what that says to do.

I used PC from 1992 to 2010. Now I have 3 mac computers and I can't be happier.
It just works. Never had an issue and design and quality's materials are supreme. I have a partition where I have Windows too. Can't be better.

Probably for the reason that for most Mac users, things just work.

I'd slit my wrists trying to do web dev on Windows

For example, who was the genius that decided that Control - C on Windows should be copy and not break like every other platform ?

Hi Shedevils,

Can I ask you a question? Are you using one of your Macs as a monitor for your PC? Can you tell me how you did that?

I currently have 3 iMacs on my desk as 1 giant extended desktop. 2 of them are connected through the firewire / video port thing, and the 3rd one uses the network for video. This works, but its slugish - I will probably swap for a proper cable soon. Anyway, I'd love to hook up my PC to this so that both computers can share all 4 monitors as an extended desktop. How did you connect your PC?

You can plug in a PC to an iMac to use as an external monitor if your PC video card or motherboard has a mDP output. Then target display mode should come up on boot.

(Adapters might work, but I'm not 100%)
Oh, and the iMac should be around 2013 model or newer for the mDP ports..

This.

Our accounting has a Mac and is running Parallelles so Windows and OSX can operate at the same time. I was so skeptical, but now I'm amazed . It. works. perfectly.

Agreed. Most PC's are just slapped together bits and pieces. I bought an Alienware to avoid this and so far have received "ok" service, but nothing compared to Apple.

And like you, the iMac that I am typing this on now is from 2009. It's FAST and works perfectly.

If its too expensive for you then don't buy it, sheese! Get an iMac for $1399 instead, or a Mac Mini for $599 and connect your own monitor. There are many options.

And sorry dude, but support is important. You and I don't buy computers just to play games, we rely 100% on them for our businesses. They *HAVE* to work. And if something goes wrong, we need Fast, instant, expert support. It's a necessity, period.

Ditto. But then again, iMovie is a simple tool made for people who want to edit home videos included with the OS for free. FCP is a professional system that's purchased separately. Night and day...

peace.

I'm using an LG 34UM95-P monitor that has both Displayport input for PC and Thunderbolt for a Mac Pro.

All I have to do is switch inputs to go between either machine. One very cool thing is that the monitor works as a USB switch so I have a keyboard connected to the monitor and it works on both machines.

Very cool! Thanks for letting me know. Are you happy with that monitor? Resolution is good, etc? And does your mac take advantage of its super-wide resolution?

My computers were never in such a state that i had to resort to using service calls or whatever... Like you say, we work with computers, that means you can sort about everything out yourself. You know what you do on it right? So you know how to solve things you've done, right?

I have no idea what the hell you have to do to a computer to be needing some support guy on the phone like some clueless airhead. Like i said, support is for the elderly and brainless chicks.

For me it's a better setup than going for multiple screens. Certainly less clutter and better cable management. Having a large display area certainly makes it easier to be aware of things. And I usually have the last 1/5 of the screen for Spotify

The USB switch is fantastic. I have the same keyboard and speakers connected to the monitor and they are available to both machines. Then a MX Master mouse connected to both as well. It makes the environment change between OSX or Windows seamless.

No problems running it with Mac or PC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRSeCKnmCLo

In defense of apple computers, though, the hottest female in the whole country, who I have been inside of and fallen asleep with on many occasions, she does use apple computers

But they still suck
And I wonder what ever happened to her because

And what about that charging port. Apple never heard about wireless charging.

There was zero reason not to include a USB 3.0 or at least more than one USB-C port in the Macbook. HP managed to make the Spectra even thinner and it at least includes 3 USB-C ports.

But oh no why make something more usefull, instead of letting the clown Jony Ive rule the company.

Apple customers are getting butt fucked, and still they make nothing but excuses to defend the company.

for the 599$ mac mini with no monitor I can get a 6core AMD with a 24" monitor and 2 hookers...or an 8 core with 24"monitor and no hookers...

now I understand if you like the look and feel of apple...but it has no advantage over my ubuntu/AMD setup...I do not even consider buying intel, simply because there is no difference in performance...windows is shit, no debate on this...but ubuntu is another story...

apple to me, is like buying a $599 carrot...

When you understand Steve Jobs, the guy still responsible for the how do you say.. "personality" of Mac products.. ", the way stuff is kind of makes more sense. As a person, he was a very interesting guy.. Good/Bad/Whatever, no matter what you think of him, he lived a very interesting life.

He really valued design, wanted each users experience to be under his control - so he could make it "as good as possible". He was a total control freak, that really shows through in the products. He considered himself like an artist, one who loved making money and obsessed over the marketing of his products - from the user experience which started with how you felt when you "opened the packaging". The commercials were a huge deal, so were product unveiling events. Heaps of ego and talk of how awesome their products are, and they make a tonne of cash (huge margin on their products).. But really at the core, you have open source operating system - tweaked considerably (mostly turning functionality off, lol), hardware designed to work specifically with that software config so they can get better performance with older tech (smart, but they use that advantage to use older tech instead of making it as fast as possible), a really nice case/pretty looking product (usually).. For what it is, I think you over-pay for what you get. Clearly the marketing side has worked very well for them.

Oh, and the iMac should be around 2013 model or newer for the mDP ports..

Thanks !!!

Pissed off? No no no no no mate

We are not pissed off. We actually have a lot of fun, and some even curious about what's going on inside the heads of Apple fanatics.

See.. no anger, just a big laugh..

Yikes! Me thinks thou doth protest too much....!

It's ok. Anytime you are feeling blue, any Apple owner will be more than happy to give you a hug.

I use a mac air, but really it's just for 1 essential reason - it's very light.
I'd take a laptop with windows if it was less than 3 pounds.
Hated it when I just got it, but learned to make do. Now using windows feels bit weird
