Was fixing up a guy's computer and I was going to upgrade it to win10 for him from Win7.

Did the upgrade then installed the latest Nvidia drivers. Seemed to work perfect. It is an older Alienware system but it was a beast when he bought it. Has dual GTX280 cards in it in SLI.

Unfortunately as soon as you restart the computer Win10 decides to update the video drivers automatically to a specific Win10 version from windows update. This breaks the SLI. No matter what I did I can not keep it from auto updating the video drivers. The sad part is the Nvidia drivers on the Nvidia website are actually newer than the windows update drivers.

I tried every hack I could find and none of them work, including the little troubleshooter ms released which was supposed to allow you to prevent specific windows updates from showing.

It looks like the only option (other than buying new video cards) is to upgrade to win10 professional then use the group policy editor to disallow any driver updates for their specific hardware ID. Not exactly a great solution.

Anyone else ever run into this? Anything else I'm missing to keep these stupid drivers from auto-updating?

Control panel -> advanced
Click advanced system settings
click hardware tab -> click device installation settings
"do you want Windows to download driver software and realistic icons for your devices?" select No, let me choose what to do

Then Never install driver software from Windows Update
Save changes

Did that already. Didn't work unfortunately. Drivers still auto update on restart.

Option #1: Mark the Nvidia driver specifically so it doesn’t get overwritten.

This will keep Windows 10 updates from re-patching that driver with one that is buggy.

Step 1: Install the Microsoft “Show or Hide Updates” package.

Go to Windows Updates on your machine and install the package from KB3073930.
This KB article describes the use of and includes a link to the downloadable “update troubleshooter”, which is found here. Note: You may have to re-run this utility to un-hide updates you want to allow in the future, so, once it’s installed, don’t forget it’s there.
Step 2: Download the known good Nvidia driver update from the following link below:

Drivers | GeForce
Once here, select “Manual Driver Search”, choose your machine’s configuration and click “Start Search”.

• Once you have downloaded the driver, right-click and chose “Run As Administrator” to install.
• Be sure to check the box for “Prevent the problematic driver or update from reinstalling automatically the next time Windows Updates are installed” to keep the new driver from being overwritten by Windows 10.
• Reboot after installation.

Or go into network and internet settings and set it as a metered internet connection with a low limit so that it won't download and install them automatically.

I've had the same problem - and the driver didn't work so nothing but black screen of death... Fixed by installing Mint Linux.

Also already tried that show hide thing and it did jack squat unfortunately. It would be nice if these little troubleshooting features MS puts out actually worked.

never did this. I guess that is one thing I can try. Although the guy I am fixing this computer up for is not really that tech savvy. He just likes video games. So not sure if he would want it kept like this. So he will have to manually approve every windows update I assume?

Edit: I know it seems to like showing all the updates available at once, and doesn't give you the option to choose which ones to download. So if there were other updates that needed downloading like a security patch, then it will probably automatically install all the shit listed under updates at the same time. So this would basically only work if he never wants to install any windows updates ever again. Or I guess he would have to just reinstall the good video drivers after every time he manually approves a windows update.

Yup. Ridiculous. All they had to do was give you the option to hide updates like in every previous version of windows.

This why I am scared to upgrade it to win10 pro and use the group policy edit feature, since I don't want to waste $100 of the guy's money only to tell him it didn't work either. He should probably just put that money towards new video cards.

Apparently Nvidia ended "official" support for those cards in 2014, but they are still releasing updated drivers for them. Maybe that is why windows update automatically installs its own driver.... thinks the card is no longer supported so maybe thinks the drivers must be out of date so it installs its own garbage drivers.
