All Californians will be charged per mile to drive

Apparently the .50 cents per gallon is not enough! The state of California is expecting every Californian to pay for every mile they drive. Check it out here California Road Charge Pilot Program

For less than a year we have a similar system in Russia for commercial trucks (vehicles exceeding 12 tons of gross vehicle weight). It's called Platon. Seems like a governor of California is an old good Putin's friend ;)

All this can be traced to plans made by Goldman Sachs

We pay tolls to drive on roads in NYS. Supposedly, it's to be used to take care of the roads in our state. You'd hardly know it by looking at the condition of our roads and overpasses.

Dumb move.

Push the burden to the most polluting cars with a higher gas tax until the majority are off the road.

Government isn't held accountable and continues to make new taxes for new revenue streams to cover for misappropriated fund on old tax revenue streams. Flawed system

They are doing this because electric cars are coming on line, and eventually a lot less tax money will be collected through gasoline tax.

The solution to this is flying cars. We have been promised flying cars for decades, but obviously there is a conspiracy in certain government departments to keep them from the general population. Republicans do not want Americans in flying cars. There is no other explanation. Fuck Trump.

Interesting. It makes sense that everyone who drives should pay to use the roads they drive on, Gas or EV.

Then again, if some of your taxes are already going towards roads, then is this a second tax?

Here in Montreal the roads are complete shit, AND, tax on gasoline is near 50%.

THere's only 1 Toll bridge that I know if and its immaculate. Then again, the cost is a whopping $7.00 per trip if you don't have a transponder in your car, and about $3.00 if you do. EV cars pay zero but I can see this changing soon.

If they can figure out a way for everyone to pay just a little for their use, AND make sure 100% of that money goes towards keeping the roads pristine, that would be awesome.

They tried to shove it down our throats here as well.
Argument used was:

"This way less people will drive so it is better for the environment"

It was tested extensively and the results were that the same amount of people kept driving. The only reason governments are interested in this, is to squeeze more money out of it's citizens. Period. No high and mighty goals of environment.

Actually it's the reverse which is their problem.. States fund their budgets with gas taxes. As higher mpg cars become the norm, they get less road tax revenue. Electric cars pay zero road tax yet use the roads..

Older less efficient cars pay more already due to the lower mpg meaning g they pay more road tax because they buy more fuel at the pump.

This is why some states even randomly check diesel fuel on the road side to try to catch people using marine diesel or veggie oil..both have no road tax..

I am expecting a federal GST sales tax or a VAT tax in the USA to pay for roads, education, universal healthcare and other societal spending. I look forward to much future bickering about this for years -- but it is probably coming.

We are looking at 10% to 15% in new consumption taxes perhaps.

The alternative is to increase the national debt and inflate the dollar or officially devalue the dollar. The alternatives are worse because the real pain will be shouldered by the working classes -- they have the least to lose -- as usual ...

But we already pay taxes for our roads.... Here our roads are created by CalTrans, which is paid for by state taxes. And gas taxes. They are taxing us twice.

Everyone should take note of what happened with the gas tax.

Politicians do not spend tax dollars appropriately. They dip into it whenever they feel like it. I am not opposed to taxes when they benefit the greater good. I am 100% opposed to taxes when politicians use them for pet projects that the tax was not designed for.

Gas taxes were wasted on pet projects. Mileage taxes will be wasted on pet projects.

Say NO.

Exactly! This is what i try to tell people who use the 'I am for higher/more taxes on subject A, because this way there is more money to spend on subject A to make it better'

This is absolute bullshit. Like you said, they grab money for all kinds of shit when they feel like it. Here in our country they say 'we can't afford to get more employees in nursing homes, we don't have the money', while people who live there don't get enough care and get showered once a week, when they're lucky - and that's a fact, not exaggerating this.
1 month later the EU demands a couple of billion extra and it is wired to them the next day... Magic?

Tax based on the distance they travel or the period of time they use the roads, rather than the amount of gasoline they consume.

TOU-Time of use charge. Just like power companies are going to do with electricity. They put new smart electric meters everywhere to start charging more at peak times.

yes I do realize. I said "government", not US. so it includes gov of Russia.

and actually what I meant by that example is when you make phone call to some phone support or your bank or if the telemarketer is calling you... I didnt mean here recording of phone calls by govs ;-)

but basically every government treats its citizen like puppies. the more socialist, burreaucratic and bigger it is, than its worse

corporations and companies also treat others like shit, dont worry

in reality almost nobody NEEDS something bigger than a Jetta or Passat with max 150 hp that do 40+ mpg

if you can afford it you are certainly free to spend more though - just like people here where gas costs 3-4 times more.

Anyone think this will disoroprtinately affect middle/low income drivers who have to drive farther for work?

The next step will be a timer! Not only taxes for gas, registration, license, insurace, miles driven, will also be the amount of time on the road! What's next? Some timeframes you're charged more per mile and for certain peak hours on the road? BS

50% EMVs in 20 years is possible. EMVs need roads. So, either you tax the vehicle's road usage (*beacon monitoring miles traveled -- sounds bad), electricity used for recharging (*that will be easy to cheat) *or* the road funding comes from some general fund -- everyone pays.

For free you will get a 2 track path that turns to mud -- 1919 style. Or, every road will be a toll road and you use your ATM card of prepaid 'toll card'.

It will be a new tax whether you like it or not. If you don't like it -- walking is good exercise

anyway, i get your point. Yes they're all corrupt. But on a national level it's way less out of control than on an EU level.

I would be ok if it primarily taxed the heavy drivers and was actually used for the roads. Say, you pay nothing or some minimal token tax for 10-15K/year, but it ramps up after that. Maybe people should pay more tax if they disproportionately chew up the roads. But, the government would need to show that the tax is used for the roads. That's the big problem with taxes. They get funneled elsewhere and then mandate more taxation.

RThere's no argument that you don't pay enough in taxes. The rising debt shows the gap between revenue and spending. Whether the taxes for roads cover the cost of the roads is debatable. I can guarantee that if roads went private the cost would be higher, prices would meet costs and include a healthy profit.

So in fact, you're not paying for it twice, they're taking too little with two different charges.

And whoever gets in next debt will continue to rise.

He has announced it, but fortunately it won't work because unfortunately all the money will just be stolen as usually. The bald dwarf has announced 100's of similar things and no one of them was implemented. That imbecile thinks that it's possible to "save the Internet on a diskette". Course it's not, but trillions of rubles are already reserved for that. What does it mean? I'll tell ya, a few of his friend oligarchs like Rotenbergs will reach higher positions in the Forbes billionaires list, and nothing else will happen.

As about road tax for trucks in Russia (Platon). Do you know who benefits on them? The government? Don't make me laugh. The official beneficent is Igor Rotenberg - a son of Arkady Rotenberg who is an old Putin's friend: Protesting truckers vent their anger at Putin ally - FT.com

Everybody here knows that another Putin friend - "a poor cellist" who has never had an own business has received 2 billion dollars (yes it's not a typo, I wrote that correctly: $2,000,000,000 fuckin' USD in cash) to his account in offshore Panama bank. When Putin was asked about it on his public press conference, he said something like: "So what? I don't see anything special. The guy has spent it on violins and I'm proud to have such a friend!". Do you think I'm kidding? I wish. Here is the proof:

And nobody cares. Because... it's Russia!

And a pictures from Russian TV "news" which says: "As you can see, Panama does not exist":
