Do you think it's a good idea for webmasters/publishers to surf the web with ad blockers on? It's kinda hard to reverse engineer the competition/spot ad opportunities with ad blockers on.

I personally find it hard to surf the web using an adblocker, and therefore I opt to use a browser instead...

But hell yeah! I got my adblock and my ghostery on all the time

I would never ever venture out without adblockers on and if I do run into a site with it its cya later no matter how much I had wanted to go there initially. If your so concerned abut your loss of popups, make your adblocker notice into your add.

I keep my browser fairly lean, with no plugins. I've chosen to uninstall Flash, but apart from that, I present to the internet as pretty close to a standard default install.

I don't mind non-intrusive ads, it's the tracking that bothers me. It's really creepy to look up something on ebay, then go to Facebook and be shown an ad from ebay begging me to look at the same product. Makes me wonder how much information is being shared between Facebook and their advertisers - there's at least linking of my activity based on IP addresses or cookies...

i dont use it. occasionally i need to check , if ads are working on my site or not.
or keep an eye on competitors site, which ads are running on their site.. etc etc.

I just turn Adblock pro off on the page or domain as I need to then reload the page. In fact, when available, Firefox reader is great for reading content and ignoring all the distracting web design, ads, exit DHTML -- most of my personal and business surfing is reading.

If you buy network ads only 50% of the site viewers will see them (and declining). When you add ad click fraud you may only get a 30% net impressions. Adwords in Google search are seen -- AdSense are not. 1st party non tracking ads (text) are seen 3rd party ads are not seen with ad blockers. There are ways around ad blockers but the problem is that the ad tracking has to be set up between the advertiser and publisher on a private domain that is under the 'radar.'

Kind of hard to surf without it on only place i turn it off on is the news sites because of there pop ups saying you can't browse with it on.

I would never surf without the adblocker!
I also use it to de-clutter sites of all social media buttons and other stuff that I do not want to see.

Other than that, I of course also put all of the common adcompanies delivery domains into the hostfile to not resolve.

Makes for a great surfing experience!
