Would I be better off making websites with WordPress or learning HTML/CSS/Javascript?
I went to developer student hangout tonight and a LOT of people there have spent the last 6-12 months trying to learn CSS and Javascript and struggling with it. None of them are job-ready and can't make a nice looking complete site yet.
A few people paid $10k+ for a developer bootcamp. One guy has been learning Javascript for 2 years and says he's still not job ready. I was like are you fucking kidding me? I can make decent WordPress sites in 3-10 days. They're not the best websites in the world but they look nice, work great on a phone and they are functional. I get compliments on my portfolio. So I want to make sites as a freelancer would I be better off sticking with WordPress or should I learn HTML/CSS/Javascript for a better career? I figure I can crank out WordPress sites for clients way faster than trying to do it in HTML/CSS/Javascript tl;dr: I want to make some extra money on the side, should I make sites with WordPress or study HTML/CSS/Javascript? |

If you want to make a quick buck, go the wordpress route. If you want longevity, find a wordpress theme you like and transfer it to html/css/php/javascript/jquery by hand. Basically, use it as a template for graphics.
Personally, I find wordpress to be absolutely horrible on many levels and no professional firm should be selling wordpress templates to their clients at top dollar and passing them off as their own designs. You will get hacked/exploited and when that happens your rep will go down the tubes. |

Why not do both?
You already have a grasp on WP, so do WP sites while you work on your html/css/js skills. .

What is a website? What is the purpose is what I mean.
If you can set up SECURE WP sites I would spend my time learning server admin skills. Set up lots of blogs on a few VPS servers with different A blocks. |
