That is like the badlands of the US Mexico border area. Until proven otherwise, we (USA) just tested a very expensive big bomb on a mountain. Probably killed 3 goats and maybe a Taliban or two.

This is not not a real event or tragedy. The pictures of the big hole in the ground will be all over the Internet for a week. It's a publicity stunt and a diversion perhaps.

You won't find this in the history books, but the US nuked Japan as a warning for Russia to not keep the eastern European lands they were occupying. Diplomatic relations between US and Russia had broken down just a few days before the bomb was dropped.

This bomb was commissioned to be built in 2003 when the previous MOAB failed to penetrate the dwelling hide-outs of the Taliban in those mountainous cave dwellings.
This is the first use of this model in real combat.
The purpose is to find out if it penetrates deep enough to take out N.Korea's underground complex. And to send the message, we could use this to do just that.

It was considered to be the primary weapon to take out Iran's underground nuclear installations.
So by the time real development was done for it, that was the primary target for it's specs under the Obama admin.

So the present admin wants "options" to take on N.Korea in a quick sweep and so they dust it off and test it out.

I do more than watch/read the news, I understand it as it presents itself. But you can't pick and choose what you read and expect to understand.

While factual to some points. It is misleading by far.
The network of tunnels has been there for at least a few thousand years.
'Few' new passageways were constructed and mainly cache rooms made to store weapons and ammo and fighters. They became the hide-out of choice because they were unreachable by armaments.

Considering you can't get the kinda equipment needed to those areas very easy, it would have taken 5k men 50 years to build such a array of tunnels with modern equipment.
They were there before Christ was a sperm. They are sprinkled throughout the mountainous regions. And by all means there are plenty more of them. Several hundred of these new MOAB's would not destroy them all.

When the US-Afghan war started, the Russians gave us most maps of the known tunnels they explored in their 80's war with them and we used and tested every hardened 'bunker buster ' we had to seal-up these caverns. Few of them were very effective.
Hence the re-designed MOAB.

Even if it was not effective in destroying the depths of all the tunnels, it would have sealed the fate of everyone inside and the arms cache inside. For they have not the man power or equipment to open them back up.

When ever there is a release of some new 'startling' info in or about the US military, you always have to suspect it is not a complete story and has political motivation to steer public opinion. Good bad or indifferent. But you should always ask plenty more questions before buying into it on the wholesale level.

A relatively large Chinese company, Shenyang Machine Tools Company, allegedly supplied sophisticated machine tools to North Korea in violation of supplier country trade control laws, according to government sources. The exports allegedly occurred in 2015. Although Shenyang company officials have stated that the exports were inadvertent, other evidence suggests that the company did know or should have known about the end destination of the controlled goods being North Korea. The Chinese government has refused to cooperate with foreign criminal investigations to determine the actual situation, backing the company’s claim that the exports were inadvertent or uncontrolled re-exports. Complicating matters, supplier countries are hesitant to supply China with details about potential illegal re-exports because of China’s history of lax enforcement and cover-ups of such cases. As a result, legal options to investigate the company’s exports are limited. However, this company should be considered a candidate for U.S. sanctions. In addition, the United States should take other measures to ensure that U.S. and other suppliers’ goods will not be re-exported to North Korea, particularly in light of increased restrictions on exports mandated by recent UN Security Council resolutions on North Korea.

You apparently choose to not have the correct info at all on this bomb.

Quick googling shows that there are only 15 of them in existence (14 now). And they were all built in 2003 by the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant. One of them was originally moved to the Persian Gulf in 2003.

The military has tested it (dropped it from a plane and exploded it) twice back in 2003. They weren't "testing" anything in Afghanistan.

The Obama Administration had nothing to do with that bomb or it's "specifications" as you erroneously posted.

The MOAB was created and tested to scare the shit out or Iraq. It was used to demoralize the Iraqis and make them easier to beat. They never even had to drop it in Iraq.
The military has "bunker buster" bombs that are designed to do what you incorrectly thought the MOAB does. Read that first link...it explains in great detail what the MOAB is designed to do.

And that's what the General who actually used it is saying they used it for in Afghanistan. It's designed to send a message to our enemies by it's sheer destructive capability. Will it work? I don't know.
