Tax reform legislation signed into law by President Trump prior to the holidays will result in a late Christmas present for Southwest Airlines employees.

Southwest?s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Gary Kelly announced on Twitter Tuesday evening that every person who started working for Southwest Airlines prior to Dec. 31, 2017, will soon receive a $1,000 cash bonus on Jan. 8, 2018.

?We applaud Congress and the president for taking this action to pass legislation, which will result in meaningful corporate income tax reform for the transportation sector in general, and for Southwest Airlines, in particular,? Mr. Kelly said in a short video shared on Twitter. ?We are excited about the savings and additional capital, which we intend to put to work in several forms ? to reward our hard-working employees, to reinvest in our business, to reward our shareholders, and to keep our costs and fares low for our customers.?

What Southwest Airlines has done is give a "1 time bonus" to its employees. They didn't get a "raise".

A $1000 Bonus is worth what - 2 weeks worth of salary for the lowest-paid employee?
That bonus is equal to only 1% of their total yearly earnings if they are broom-pushers. This bonus is much less if they are any grade above that.

Fifth Third Bancorp - The Cincinnati-based banking corporation said it would raise the minimum hourly wage for all employees to $15 per hour and dispense $1,000 bonuses for more than 13,500 workers. The company says tax reform was directly responsible for the initiatives.


JPMorgan Chase The country's largest bank said it will raise wages for roughly 22,000 workers to between $15 and $18 per hour. JPMorgan Chase (JPM) employees are also set to receive a $750 bonus this month.

JetBlue - The New York-based airline said on Jan. 4 that it would grant a $1,000 to each of its 21,000 crewmembers, with the exception of its CEO and other executives.

U.S. Bank - U.S. Bancorp, the parent company of U.S. Bank, is distributing $1,000 bonuses to roughly 60,000 of its employees and raising minimum wage for hourly workers to $15 per hour.

Verizon - The telecom giant Verizon (VZ) on Tuesday joined several major companies in rewarding employees with incentives tied to the passage of a GOP-backed tax reform bill.


The Walt Disney Co. More than 125,000 Disney employees will receive $1,000 cash bonuses, the company announced on Jan. 23. The bonuses will be dispersed in two payments, one in March and another in September. In addition, Disney invested $50 million in an education program to cover tuition payments for hourly employees.

Wells Fargo Wells Fargo & Company (WFC) said it would raise the minimum wage for its team members to $15 per hour and earmark $400 million for philanthropic initiatives in 2018. Some $100 million of that total will be committed to boosting small businesses, while $75 million will support neighborhood revitalization efforts.

might want to stop reading the headlines and look at a few facts.


Also I do believe that SWA is not the only airline in America to suddenly get a tax break, so hopefully these airlines don't compete against one another, and that they paid down their 2.9 billion debt first, and are just not off loading accumulated income from the Obama economy. But then again why would you at 3% interest, just go in to more debt and do the 1999 party dance.

This is what adds to perfect storm.. "flat screen TV bonuses" which is the name given to the 1k hand out the Aussie government did to try and kick start the economy here, and the key fuck up in that, was there was no Government follow up with drumming into people if you don't buy local made products with this extra cash, you basically send most of it back to China.

The major difference between crucifissio, OneHungLo, and Baldbastard when it comes to American politics, is I actually do pay tax in the USA and have big chunk of money invested there, and because I carry a lot of debt here in Aus, 1m +, American policy does directly effect my back pocket. I'm not concerned about my next paycheck from the USA or a one off bonus I'm in it for the long term benefit. And as far as long term investment goes.. every alarm bell in the book is going off.

87 year old Toronto facility not worth updating because no ones buying soup like they used to, new place is being built but it will only require 200 staff not 600.

I think that's called technology more than anything.

have you ever tried Campbell's Soups? I suggest you do and then you will understand why this should of happened 86 years a go, certainly no place in a modern diet, have a bowl of salt and water hun.

That's not Sydney wages, that's the national award, and like every country sure the major city is expensive, but beyond that there's all sorts of towns, small cities and villages that are very reasonable to live in, Sydney, Moscow, NYC, London.. where ever big city big prices and wages. But wages wise they are covered by the same agreement, the minimum wage.

Yes, of course I read the article I linked to. Clearly you did not.

They are not getting a new place for production, but for corporate staff. All production is being moved to the US. Their production facility is not worth upgrading because the cost of manufacturing here is too high due to the cost of electricity, taxes and regulations.

And your opinion on the quality of their product is irrelevant.
