How to lower 95% percentile usage ?
my web host is showing me
95%ile Usage 42.52 Mbit/s there is 10000 GB bandwidth limit for my server. from what i read, 5 % hits reached at 42.52 Mbit/s and 95% were below that. its a dedicated server with 100 mbps port. so my question is., 1) was my site unreachable for few users (5%) when concurrent connections/users were high ? because port is 100 mbps ? 2) is this an issue ? do i need to address/fix it ? 3) can switching to 1gbps port will fix it ? or am i missing something and 95% percentile doesnt work that way ? what are your thoughts ? thanks for your time.

Really depends on your traffic usage. I've got a box that is running at 47.24Mb/s on 95% and it's only doing about 4.4TB per month in data usage. The max was 124.15 Mb/s and the ave was 13.75Mb/s.
The few times that it's peaking over 100Mb/s I doubt you'd see much if any slow down on the site. And if your 95% was closure to 100Mb/s then you'd be over your 10TB of data usage anyway. So I would say your fine where you are, bumping it up to 1Gb/s line won't help with your current traffic as it is ![]() The thing to watch for is clipping, where the sustained output is hitting your 100Mb/s for an extended period of time, that is when things get slowed down for your surfers. You'll see the peaks on your mrtg graph start to look more like hills with a flat top versus peaks. This is an mrtg of a cpu, but you get the idea, you can see where it flattens out on the top. ![]() Good luck ![]()

i am using more than 10000 GB per month in bandwidth., from what i know 100mbps unmtered can give 33 tb , so i guess i am fine for now., unless i reach 33 tb then ill have to increase uplink port speed and get more bandwidth too.

so your BW limit is 10000 GB/month or 100 mbps unmetered?
port speed and monthly BW limit are two different things.

and bandwidth is 10 tb metered, overages are 0.10 bucks per gb.

If your on a 100Mb/s port, then yes 33TB is the theoretical amount of traffic you can run thru it, but that is using 100% all the time, which you would see slow down's across the board for all your surfers because no one fills the line up to 100% all the time. My traffic peaks around 4pm CST, but around 4am it's less than 20% of my peak.
So if your doing 20TB on a 100Mb/s pipe your getting pretty close to your limit before there is slow downs during the peak traffic use ![]() Does the host show an mrtg where you can see max and ave use ?? What are they ??

Since your paying for overages I would think your host would want to bump you up to a 1Gb/s pipe. What do they charge to put bump up ??

ok, then your host shouldn't have any problem to switch you to 1 gbps for free or very little fee.

Do you have an image of your MRTG chart? Similar to what TFCash posted. You should likely be on a 250 Mbps limit minimum. I'm not sure why they wouldn't just open it up for you if you are paying for the bandwidth anyway.

Sounds like you dont know what 95% means..
You could be at 45mbs with 95% but still peaking at well over 100mbs,well you won't go over 100mbs because your capped, which means during your busy hours your site will get slow. If your not getting billed on 95% I'm not even sure why you care what your 95% is. You should see what your peaking at not what your 95% is. |

Upgrade the port or try laying off some of your bandwidth to CDN, which would likely be more expensive. Upgrading the port is your best, easiest and cheapest option.
