We all know commercialization of space, unregulated, will not go well for anyone but the richest.

But I never thought we would be actually talking about such things in my lifetime.
My thinking was we were going to fight over the deep sea and Antarctica first .

Its weird how the moon is essentially another planet located in the "sweet spot" in the solar system. The perfect distance from the sun for a planet to be teeming with life and fertility. Yet, its a cold lifeless rock compared to the Earth. A complete opposite.

If you envision New York City on one side of the moon, and Los Angeles on the other side, the scale would be just about perfect.

Timocharis Crater is roughly the same size the Earth would be, if the moon was the sun.

It is a very valid point that the world needs to set a definition for rights and ownership (if any) NOW !
Before folks start making money from mining the moon and asteroids and space tourism gets started. Who will manage all this space junk ?

You know it will only take one impact/explosion of a large satellite in orbit to create a chain reaction of satellite destruction and more space junk insuring we can not have anything in orbit for hundreds of years. It could even get hard to launch a vehicle outside of orbit from all that junk. In 8 years, they will be able to track every square inch of dirt and people all at once in real time (live) from space.

Once these activities get started, you will find it hard to stop those that have started and become rich from it from stopping what may not be in anyone's interest but theirs.

Well, I just thought it was interesting the topic is making itself known while I am still living.

But I would remind everyone the agreements we have in Antarctica...

But then again, how much would change in that agreement if they find they can drill for oil and mine for gold down there. Likely coming when the ice cap melts off in 50 years and all the ocean front property is underwater... lol....

All things to think about going forward.

China has launched many unmanned probes. Some in just the last year or two.
Russia has had some there for decades that may sill be active. I used some of my ham radio equipment back in the 80's and identified one still active.

Currently, we (US) have a orbiting satellite that has mapped the entire surface and is the probe that discovered what they think is water on it's southern pole. (pentagon probe)

We have the tech, just not the will to spend the money and do it.
And then you have this thing called MISSION...
What would the mission be.
Not many want to spend the massive amount of money to send MEN tot he moon when you can do and test 50x more with unmanned probes and that data will eventually help make it cheaper to send men to the moon once again and likely set-up a permanent base.

But what will fund that is commercial enterprise that finds value mining the moon and those probes will tell us the what and where stuff of value is.

It is very hard to guess what we will really find there and I suspect we will answer some of our own origins.
In all cultures around the globe, ancient tales tell of "a time before the moon" and there are 2 reasonable explanations for that being the truth more than 8k years ago.

In the past (meaning a long long time ago, before Baddog) explorers would sale to a land and declare ownership for their country. In some cases, they declared ownership of land that was already occupied or land that is already claimed by another country. In some cases an explorer would claim "land" for one country, and then that country would never put a settlement there (or would put a settlement there for a short period), and then another explorer would return decades later and claim it for their country even though it was already claimed. The Falklands Islands is a good example.

We have treaties in place that say one nation cannot claim a moon or planet. On the other hand, tradition has always been that the first country to a "new land" who puts in a settlement there has legal right to that. Yet... No one imagines that one country can own the moon, or own Mars.

Taking all of that into consideration.... Such treaties are unfair to other countries who have no claims....

As for space junk.... Yikes. Someone needs to clean that shit up.

I am sorry to predict, if you did not read between the lines of what I was kinda saying...
Company's are the ones that will be making claims to their operations.
We don't really have definitions for this.
This is the only reason I can sympathize with the Russian actions if they are true to fact.
Who will police it and how ? Valid questions cause you know it's going to happen.
Like data security, if you wait for it to be a issue, it's to late !

We launched more satellites in orbit to the earth the last 9 years, as all the years in previous history. It is accelerating at a pace that is beyond belief because you have a dozen private company's here in the us and a dozen more nations actively doing the same.
It is inevitable that a incident is going to happen in our lifetime that is a non-intentional action that is going to destroy the entire fleet of satellites from all nations.
cubesat's are the thing now and everyone is launching them.
Could be over 500 launched this year.
