Auto generated access credentials VS let users decide them

Hey guys,

sorry for dumb question but what do think about giving members auto-generated credentials? Would it make the signup process faster and smoother or do you think they would hate not choosing them?

Any direct experience with it?

Thanks,
TA

We were thinking of using email as login with a random generated password instead of a classic username, it will help to remember and help to reduce password sharing.

I'm not a fan of auto generated passes because they seem to require more user support because how can someone remember that and a lot of adult membership site confirmation emails go to spam.

I'm not a fan. I use two banks, one has username that's first 3 letters of first name + first 3 letters of last name, then 4 numbers. The other is just a bunch of numbers. I can never remember the login for the second one.

At the end I decided to go with email + user generated password.

Randomly generated passes:
- are more secure (they are unique)
- require more customer support

User chosen passes:
- are less secure (guaranteed you have "coffee" and "qwerty12345" in there, plus usernames and passwords which are used on more than one site)
- require less customer support
