The context: OPIUM in the 1800s was viewed as a MEDICINE... much like MEDICINAL marijuana is used today. A salve for the soul.

However, in the years after Marx, his quote about religion being the "opium of the masses" was interpreted in a completely different way. It was viewed as something to BE DESTROYED / OPPOSED / RIDICULED because it pure DELUSION and DESTRUCTION. Marx had a different context for it.

Besides, any society based on REAL atheism will quickly fall apart because, interestingly enough, any conception of MORALITY hinges on acceptance of a PRIOR AUTHORITY... Real atheism has no space for concepts like EVIL. It's every person for himself.

Communists have been totting science over religion since the late 1800s and we've all seen how successful Communist nations have been.

Also you'll notice that 95% of the innovation this world enjoys has come from Capitalist nations with strong Christian backgrounds.

For better or for worse it's religion that deals with questions about morality, justice, laws and rights.

While on the other hand the core doctrines of science never stop to consider the inner dealings of humanity and the societies which we create..... You discredited your own point.. You try to make the point that science over religion = bad because the commies did it and failed. Yet then go on to say Capitalism is better than Communism.

Meanwhile the reason the commies failed was not because they pushed science of religion, but because Communism unchecked is a failed system just like Capitalism left unchecked will also fail.

Democracy with checks and balances is the only thing that will last because that is a system of the people by the people. When those in power become corrupted by their power and start trying to right the system in their favor the system will fail.

Trump and Republicans are working very hard to destroy democracy & in doing so they will cause the end of democracy and create a failed state if their wishes come true..

1. Name one capitalist nation that's failed.
Capitalist nations start having problems when governments attempt to interfere in the market, social interactions, private lives of citizens, etc.

2. Ancient Islam worried about morality, justice, etc.
Modern Islam is just plain fucked up and the vast majority of the people in those nations LIKE it that way.

(NB: My tax dollars are paying for one of my loser neighbors to walk back and forth to his mosque several times a day. He does NOT work at all. Plus he's got 4 kids with 2 women... Collects a big welfare check, lives in subsidized housing, gets free food from food banks, free clothing from charities, his kids get free boxing lessons at the community center and drives a new SUV.

He gets a better deal than the people born in this nation and it's the natural born citizens that pay for this bum right to do nothing but pray 5 times a day. The irony is that while he contributes nothing to society he's still a respected member of the community on the other hand I'm a scum bag pornographer that employs people and pays taxes.

That's How Socialism/Communism works because hard work never pays off but being a lousy drain on society is praised. So where's the fucking science to study and fix this problem?

Ancient Christianity had a solution to fix the Islam problme and they called it the crusades. Perhaps if more people started going back to church we would see a lot less usless drains on society)

Increased mobility, ease of instant long distance communication, water/sewer & electricity & the light bulb allowing people to work longer hours, and with machine help. Let's not forget millions and millions of wealthy new European immigrants to the country bringing their wealth with them.

Not much to do with unrestricted capitalism. Capitalism is a great thing but unrestricted capitalism is what caused the Great Depression.

It has never been misunderstood. Opiom was used in medicine in 1800s and it is still being used in medicine today as a drug to relieve suffering, especially suffering of hopelessly ill people who's gonna die.
