Why Is Russia Turning Its Su-57 Stealth Fighter Into A Ship-Killer?

Why Is Russia Turning Its Su-57 Stealth Fighter Into A Ship-Killer?

Russia is designing an anti-ship missile for its Su-57 stealth fighter.

But is hunting ships the best mission for such an advanced aircraft?

Deputy Defense Minister Alexey Krivoruchko made the announcement while visiting the Detal Design Bureau, which is developing a new anti-ship missile, according to Russian news agency TASS.

“Today the enterprise is working on developing an active homing warhead for the promising anti-ship missile that is planned to be carried by the Su-57 fighter as well," Krivoruchko said.

“A working meeting was held on the premises of the Detal Design Bureau to discuss the issue of signing a contract with Tactical Missiles Corporation on acquiring the entire range of air-launched weapons for the Su-57 fighter jets,” TASS said.

The Su-57 is Russia’s equivalent of the U.S. F-22 and F-35 stealth fighters. A Mach 2 aircraft capable of air superiority and ground-strike missions, it is Russia’s first stealth plane, and probably the most sophisticated aircraft in the Russian arsenal. It also has a long and troubled history stretching back more than a decade, due to technical issues and even more because of financial considerations. Estimates have ranged from $40 million to $156 million per plane—a figure that earlier made the Russian Air Force cancel mass production and buy just a handful of aircraft. Russia now has about a dozen Su-57s, which have flown a few missions over Syria.

China Thinks Russia's New Stealth Fighter 'Trashes' the F-35

China Thinks Russia's New Stealth Fighter 'Trashes' the F-35

The Su-57 completely 'trashes' the latest American fighters like the F-35—at least, according to Chinese media.

Earlier this month, Chinese defense news outlet Mil.news.sina published an analytical piece on the state of Russia’s arsenal. The article looked to the Su-57, Russia’s upcoming fifth generation stealth fighter, as a case study in the failures and successes of Russia’s ambitious, decades-long campaign to modernize its armed forces.

Whereas other fifth-generation fighters—most prominently, the US F-35—are strategic weapons, the author argues that the Su-57 was designed for an entirely different purpose that makes sense within the broader context of Russian military doctrine: “The Russians have a very simple idea. Nuclear weapons will defend Russia against the aggression of great powers. Jet fighters, military vessels, and other tactical weapons will guarantee Russia’s victory in small, local conflicts.”

Russia is basically has no Navy so Russia wants to destroy other nations Navy to even the playing field.

China always talks shit and is in cohorts with Russia on all international matters. Remember Russia and China share a 2,615 mile border. If Russia wanted to they could poison the rivers at their border the flow down into China and really fuck with China epically.

Yes and Paul still thinks that Europe can be saved with tradedeals! A united central ruled European army sounds like a better plan to me!

If you are hunting/killing aircraft carriers ... it seems logical to evade the battle group and take out the carrier. for the group would have no protection and useless. It must work together as a unit.

Think of the billions they spend on a complete battle group. It's worth even 100M for a craft that can take out several carriers. They can't out-money the US, so they have to do it smarter. And they may have depending on what they may have to counter this threat. But I figure it can strike from a distance or very quickly undetected.

Oh... when comparing the F35, you must also state what version you are comparing.
Some branches have 3 versions. The craft was to reduce costs by using the same parts like engines.
While it seemed like a good idea, it wasn't the best universal item it was intended to be.

probably because the SU-35S is the new fighter jet to over take the 57...

& besides, like the EuroFighter, the SU-57 was multi tasked fighter and bomber...

The Eurofighter carries maritime warheads too
