I was going to Warwick on Thursday to shop around Trader Joe’s. I’ve never been there and didn’t know that one was close to me.

I’m postponing the trip for another month. I cancelled my doctor appointment in Fairhaven after a woman died though she was far away from my old house and my doctor. Morning appointments are hard to get and the late afternoon appointments aren’t safe.


Rhode Island health officials said Monday a person from West Warwick has died after contracting the rare mosquito-borne Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus.

The individual, who was in their 50s, passed away Sunday.

It’s the first fatal human EEE case in the state since 2007, according to a statement from the Rhode Island Department of Health. Officials announced on Aug. 30 that the person, who has not been identified, had contracted the virus and was in critical condition.

EEE, which spreads through infected mosquitos, carries symptoms that include coma, fever, and brain swelling.

In Massachusetts, officials have found the virus in seven people this year, including a Fairhaven woman who died after contracting EEE last month.

Aerial spraying for mosquito control in Rhode Island was slated to continue for a second night Monday in four “critical risk” areas, the Department of Health said.

“Spraying in northern Rhode Island (parts of Burrillville, North Smithfield, and Woonsocket) was not completed on Sunday night due to falling temperatures. (The effectiveness of spraying is limited when the temperature falls below 58 degrees),” the department said in the release. “Spraying in these northern areas, and parts of southern Rhode Island (parts of Westerly, Hopkinton, and Charlestown) is planned for tonight. Spraying will start at dusk tonight and will be completed by 4:30 a.m. Tuesday.”

Health officials said they have detected EEE twice in both Central Falls and Westerly, where a horse was also diagnosed with the virus.

The Department of Health is urging the public to take precautions, such as using insect repellent, limiting time spent outdoors after dark, and draining any water that collects in yards and around residences.

One of the reason why i moved from my original city is because we have there special mosquito types, hybrid between fruit fly and ordinary mosquito , and they are much worse then ordinary ones - very small, hard to see, leaving huge red stamp once they hit. There was even several confirmed cases of death after being attacked by a swarm.

It’s scary that each year these deadly little mosquitoes wreak havoc on the area. With technology and drug treatment, you’d think that they could find a cure for this.

It’s very sad.

Air dusting is effective technology but it cost a lot of money, so it is used only as last call solution.
Beside that, i heard how some researched manage to solve problem by making male mosquito sterile so they dont reproduce and that sounds like most effective method, not sure why is not that applied yet.

Actually people are starting to freak about it around here. I think there's around 20 cases of EEE which is pretty deadly. So she's kind of right..for once.

They test for it out here and a shit load of mosquitos are positive for it. They've canceled a lot of youth sports and lots of outdoor activities past dusk.

I think there are just a lot of mosquitoes here, especially where Pam and I live. There are a lot of wetlands around here and if we have a wet winter like we had this past winter, they breed like crazy.

I’m quoting the media. But feel free to hang around the wetlands and ponds at night before they spray again. Nah, you’ll stay inside yet brag how you spent a week at a swamp with no repellent, no clothes and you saw no mosquitoes.

It’s a conspiracy theory to keep tourists away from the area now that the tourist season is over.

But live in your shell and ignore the media and people who have died from EEE. I made it up to scare people away from the area. They might find my gold mine.

So bizarre to see someone making a thread about cancelling a trip to Trader Joe's, like it's Disney World or something. I just went to Trader Joe's this morning and it took 5 minutes. No trip planning or preparation. Just hit it during my morning walk.
