Once again: national averages for homicide in Russia and the USA are the same. Both are about 5.1 (have no idea who told you that ours is twice higher). However, the States have no Northern Caucasus, which is included into the statistics. So the big cities in Central Russia are generally safer than the US ones.

No. Course if you live in a wooden cabin, it will be really good but in a brick or a concrete house it may easily kill the shooter (you). I don't know which houses you live in Australia, but in Russia most of the people live in houses made of reinforced concrete. A 7.62 AK47 bullet is a very risky thing inside.

Many countries have them and Russia of course. But we have do separate a war zone and a criminal place. Here in Russia we have a real war on the Northern Caucasus. These are military operations and course all the victims are counted and added to the average homicide ratio of the whole country, which is absolutely same as the homicide ratio in the States. Tha's why I was a bit surprised why someone says it's two times higher here.

Because formally there is no war in Russia. There is officially an anti-terror operation against radical Islamists. It's considered just like a police operation, but if you watch the videos, you'll see that's not so. That's a real military operation. Lot's of people die and course it's a part of the homicide rate for the country. However this happens far-far away from the Central Russian cities. That's like a country inside a country...

P.S. You can also see the two Chechen wars in Russia here as well: Crime in Russia - Wikipedia - check it by the year. Since it was an internal (civilian) war, the killed people are considered as victims of homicide.

Why are the soldiers wearing white arm bands?
I see lots of gunfire, but I see no bullets hitting anywhere. Looks like blanks.
The explosives used look and sound very weak, like artillery or grenade simulators.
A guy fires 2 antitank rockets, but no rockets come out. Sounds more like a small caliber handgun round.
A guy tosses a concussion grenade (flash bang) in the door, but that's the weakest result I've ever seen from a real one.

Thanks to Obama, our police became very militarized since he authorized military weapons and vehicles to be passed down to local police, every police department was submitting applications for the new equipment like MRAPs, hummers, M4's, kevlar helmets and body armor, night vision and everything just short of tanks, attack helicopters, and rocket launchers.

These are Spetsnaz (watch the Discovery video about them). The same units were assaulting the Amin's palace during the Storm-333 operation. Here in Russia we have no strict rule on (once again: watch the Discovery video) who they should be called. They are professional (non drafted ones) soldiers and they are absolutely universal. As I said, there is no strict graduation for them.

As about Muslims, so course no. The Muslim religion is the 2nd religion after Christianity in Russia. I've grown up in a Muslim city of Russia and I have a lot of Muslim buddies from there. So these are military operations against radical Islamists (ISIS, etc), who are different to Muslims... because they are radicals.

P.S. In my city the Muslim kids were knocking the doors to get eggs at Christian Easter, while I was celebrating the Muslim Kurban Bayram. I'm an atheist BTW. We always lived in piece - Christians and Muslims. The orthodox Christian church and Mosque stay together:

I know the thread has derailed into something about Russia, but as a non-gun owner I went to the range and tried a bunch of the popular handguns hoping to like the one I thought looked coolest...

My favorite ended up being a Rhino revolver which surprised me, felt nice to shoot, easy to reload, and I was the most accurate with it.

I actually do not enjoy shooting however these days... you going to get one? make sure and take training so you won't be afraid to use the the darn thing, and so you won't shot the wrong person. if you can find a dark room to bang off a few rounds so you are prepared for the bang, the flash and the blowback on your hands. it can be pretty frightening if you are not ready for it.

The mentality, I believe. They are mostly Muslims, Russians consider themselves Christians (actually I think that barely a single % of them have read the Holly Bible). Also all those wars (Caucasian territories have always been suppressed by Russian Czars, by Soviets and even now there is a military anti-terror operation). And the most important fact is that Caucasus is a mostly poor territory. The people from villages come to the Central Russia. So the real problem is not that they are Caucasians. The problem is that they come to big cities from poor territories. So it's like all those Arabic refugees in the EU. A totally different mentality. When a usual Russian or other European sees a naked woman, he looks at her and thinks "that is a... naked woman". When a guy from a distant village who lived in a different culture sees a woman without Hijab and even in a short skirt, he thinks "she's a whore! what we do to whores?"

Course that people of Caucasian nationalities who lived in Central Russia for his whole life is no different to others. I'm talking only about all those refugees from poor distant villages.
