External drives - Best Cyber Monday deals
I'm in the market for external hard drives for 20+ TB storage (Desktop NAS)
Show me the best Cyber Monday deals OR just overall recommendations ![]() Tired of stacking multiple 10+TB Western Digital drives, it's way too cumbersome

You can get good drives from Seagate or Western Digital. You'll want to buy the NAS level drives, like this: https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-IronW...647MNN4HEKQ9H0 Synology has a proprietary RAID system which runs right around 2/3 of storage space. What this means for you: if you need 20 TB of storage, go ahead and get at least 4 x 10 TB drives. This gives roughly 40 "total" TB, but around 26 TB usable space for your data. I would recommend 12 TB drives just to save you any hassle later. You can always daisychain another NAS if needed as well but that's just more equipment for you to purchase. Feel free to shoot me a text if you need any more help. If you lost my number, just let me know and I'll shoot you one!

If I buy 4x10TB drives, then the enclosure is full and maxed at 40 TB (26 usable) I could buy 18TB drives and get more mileage, no? Albeit, a lot more expensive. Synology NAS $600 + 18TB x 4 (NAS IronWolf Pro) @ $575x4 = $2300 $3,000 for 48ishTB usable?

Here's a 6 bay: https://www.amazon.com/Synology-Bay-...Z84BPTNZ900PD9 They also have an 8. In my home office I have a 4 bay and an 8 bay. Honestly, I would not buy the 4 again because I've already ran into space issues. With your concerns listed, I would recommend jumping right into the 8 bay with 4 x 12 TB drives, the other 4 bays you can leave open until you need them. By that point, the 18 TB drives may be more economical. My solution with the 8 bay and 4 x 12 TB will run you around $2k and gives you 4 bays to fill later.

I suggest this. It’s pre-built and works mac or windows. 36TB (2x18TB DRIVES) I run one for main work and the other for daily backups of that work. |

and then you used an 18TB WD as an off-site back-up copy. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/wd-easy...&ref=212&loc=1 Or am I over-complicating it?

No worries. I finally grew up a few years ago and realized that we are all different with preferences and needs.
I did have a nas about 9 years ago. I remember files crawling slower than a sloth through the ethernet. Is this still the same today? If you wanted to grab a 150GB file from your nas is the speed better these days? |

I've been using Promise for a while - they will do a bit of handholding with their tech team to get you up and running. I know I needed it. Good to have a few extra drives on hand if some get corrupted but less of a problem with their newer series. |
