Have you ever driven across country?

I have done it 15 1/3 times now. I have taken all 3 major east/west routes. I absolutely love it! I stopped flying when they banned smoking on planes. Have not missed flying at all... except for the take off... that is fun!

Of course, when you travel by car, you get to see everything. You can stop anywhere and make as many or as few detours as you wish. You have pretty much everything you need along the way. And for the most part, a safe way to travel.

As I drive along the freeways... take a few detours to see local color... you look around and imagine nothingness.... totally empty... and wonder what it was like for the 1st travelers making the trip without marked roads, no convenient stores for food and drink.... no motels to shelter you from the elements... and of course, the threat of being slaughtered at any time.

When my mom got sick we had to leave Seattle and head back to Pittsburgh, we left during one of the worst winters in the Northwest in years, around 2011 I believe. We got caught is a hell of a snowstorm in Idaho. I mean I am behind a Semi and our Isuzu is up to the doors in its tracks.

We take the next exit.. way too much snow to be driving with a loaded trailer. We were lucky, there was one little country gas station, closed at the time, that we camped out in their parking lot.

For us, that was roughing it. Had a little food in the cooler, gas in the tank to keep warm and a light to make us feel a little secure. The snow was the most beautiful snow I have ever seen. The flakes were as big as silver dollars. A large grouping of evergreens across the street giving a green and white background to the falling snow.

We had movies on the mp3 player with sound through the car speakers was like being a giant in a tiny persons movie theater with the small screen.

Christ... I'm, babbling! Sorry, not much going on today. Wake and Bake!

Hope you all have a great Monday!

Several times between California and Florida, one trip back from Florida to California was done in 48 hours almost to the minute, and that included a 5 hour sleep stop in Fort Stockton Texas.

I used to shag cars for a buddy who ran a used car dealership, Vanishing Point style. I would go from South Florida to New York, Atlanta, Denver, Cincinnati, Toronto. I loved it.

I would try to make 1000 miles per day and if going somewhere I'd already been take a different route, I saw a bit of the country that way.

I miss it.

Toronto to Vancouver, BC via northern USA once in the eighties. This was an awesome road journey, with a delightful sampling of the diverse US geography.

My Fiat Spyder convertible was literally blown across lanes by wind on the highway just leaving Chicago.

And then, 30 times cross-Canada, Toronto to Vancouver (and visa versa), driving my car, and also Greyhound.

Ground travel is a great way to experience the geography and social diversity of a country.

1000 miles a day does not sound very much fun. You can't see anything at night time

I've wanted to for years and was definitely planning on traveling more ... in 2020. Doh!

I used to do a ton of road trips, but never full cross country.

That is awesome that you've done that so many times!

I've driven across Europe, from North to South more-or-less, but never across the US or Canada.

The most i've ever driven was from Massachusetts to Florida for spring break when I was 18... And it SUCKED lol

I couldn't imagine going cross country. Maybe in an RV for a trip with many stops, but not in a car straight through.

"Straight through" is not a road trip; that is having to drive somewhere. Road trips show you stuff like

Oh yeah, I also drove across Spain, and Andorra; traveled by bus around Ireland, and rode a motorcycle through part of Germany.

Not sure what made me think about that. But I also rode my motorcycle down most of Baja California, including the first few miles of the Baja 1000 in the late 80's.

Me and a couple buddies are seriously thinking about doing San Diego to Panama, by motorcycle, late this spring ... and then up through Belize, and back into the US at El Paso ...

Pretty sure it starts in CA and ends in NY.

My wife and I have been traveling all over the USA lately. We plan to get a motorhome and travel over much more of it here soon.

I have not done it. Mostly because I don't have the time.

I do like road trips. We routinely pile up in the Jeep Grand Cherokee (with my bike) and go up and down the West Coast, although more often to SoCal than any other place. Once we drove to Montana.

I wouldn't mind driving from California to Florida.... Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, then Florida.... Sounds interesting.

It was a job, more miles = more $

From Ft Lauderdale to my favorite restaurant in Queens was 19 hours, then out to Long Island to drop the car and hit MacArthur for the flight home, if I timed it right I was home 24-28 hours after I left South Florida.
Sometimes I would have a repo going back the other way, then I would sleep some after getting back out of New York/New Jersey area. Home 48-52 hours after leaving.

I was Kowalski without the Challenger, or the speed.

I was also a lot younger back then.

I quit after I was forced to take a bus back from Denver to Florida, 3 days on a Greyhound will cause you to rethink your entire life.

Navigational question marks aside, I have fond memories of the buffets on the riverboat casinos there. Very different sorts of cuisine from Vegas and architecturally interesting.

I have only done the riverboat casinos in Indiana. Too much smoke and no free drinks.

Drove from Calgary Alberta to Tuktoyaktuk in the Northwest Territories once. Took 5 days.

From Dawson City Yukon to Inuvik NWT it's 750 kilometers of dirt road and one gas station right about midway at Eagle Plains. You don't see much traffic as most everything and everybody is flown there. Can only pray that nothing goes wrong when it's minus 35 degrees.

Inuvik to Tuk is about 150 kilometers of ice road on the Mackenzie River. It's like a highway when you get up to there...

You don't lie! Went from Phoenix to Chattanooga and passed through Mississippi. Not a comfortable drive. I was not comfortable stopping in any of those southern states to be honest.

What year was that. Traveling by motorcycle you stop in every town that has a gas station. It was pretty obvious we weren't from around there.

I never felt any hostility going back to my first excursions to the south in the early 80s.

I figured Hollywood fucked them like they did bikers.

I have many stories of southern hospitality from all over the south.

That being said, you were probably more off-road than me

Years ago while shooting a movie in Prague, I took the leading American actress for dinner in one of Prague restaurants. Prague has a river Vltava running thru it. After we crossed the river she asked me:" What country are we in now?", my answer was obvious :" We are still in the Czech republic". She pondered a bit and then, with utmost seriousness stated:" That is unusual, in America when you cross a river you are in another state" .

Since then I am sensitive to such "Americana"

Whenever I've been down south I've always felt like the people were so nice and friendly.

Maybe because I live in the Northeast where people will tear your head off if you look at them the wrong way.

The family and I are planning a road trip from Seattle to Miami Beach next August. We plan on meandering around for about 2 weeks trying to hit the major parks like Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon down through Texas and New Orleans. We're saying goodbye to PNW and just going to stay in South Florida permanently from now on. Two households are too much.

Ah, so staying in FL. Was going to say two weeks is not long enough for round trip

Done the same thing once. Traveled coast to coast from Miami Beach to LA.

And do you think rednecks have progressed over the years? Do you think they have become more open minded?
