Okay, I was wondering about other people's experiences regarding page speed and SE positions. It has been a long time now so I guess everyone experimented with this.

The precise question is: How fast (in your opinion) page speed index should be to ensure that the page is not stuck in SERPs because of this factor?

I am seeing very slow pages ranking very well so how much do you care about requirements and what do you consider the result good enough?

The short answer is that, YES! Page speed SEO is a real thing that affects each other. Google, and most search engines, consider speed as a ranking factor.

Now there are about 6 factors that affect SERP

Keyword selection.
Quality of content.
Experience, expertise, authoritativeness, trustworthiness (EEAT)
Backlinks.
Site structure and design.
User experience.

So if you're seeing good results understand that there is no penalty, per se, for having a slow website… but Google does favor faster sites in its search results. If the search engine is given the choice between two sites with similar factors, but one loads 2 seconds faster than the other, the faster site will always outrank it.

Now to your question about speed.

In short, your website should load as fast as possible! The ideal website load time for mobile sites is 1-2 seconds. 53% of mobile site visits are abandoned if pages take longer than 3 seconds to load. A 2-second delay in load time resulted in abandonment rates of up to 87%

Your site shouldn't be slow of course but I wouldn't chase milliseconds. Anyway, a slow loading site with good backlink profile and content will probably always rank better than a fast loading one with poor backlinks and content.

what is the Google page speed index you consider good enough and that you consider the speed optimization process is done well?

I have one blog with high-quality content but it is constantly sinking. I guess it is because of links but I can't exclude speed because I did what I could a long time ago and there is still a lot of place for speeding (regarding score). The alternative is to replace WordPress theme but that usually ends very badly.

How is your direct competition doing? It's not necessary to consider just r1, but also those r3 and above. Taking all of them into account should provide you with a comprehensive result. I hope this information helps. Good luck!

Like, page speed alone isn't going to make much of a noticeable difference, more like, use page speed as part of your ux optimization.

I'm in similar situation, got a WP ranking for a few nice keywords, but it got shitty google speed metrics.. I optimized the theme multiple times, but there isn't much there can be done.. maybe switching to WebP instead of JPG as last resort..

But yeah I dont want to switch themes either, I'm afraid I will lose rankings.

Beyond the obvious stuff, do not waste time trying to achieve that pefect score on Google pagespeed, especially at the expense of your site.

If you aren't ranking for what you want, you need more links.

this was an extremely helpful answer. I have been wondering the same thing. Stressing about my site speed but at the same time integrating new features and landing pages. But this just gave me a piece of mind that things will balance out.

Of course, I did all I could and I changed all images to webp years ago. The thing is that the themes used are good for conversions and user experience but not so good for speed. On top of that, I've paid people to fix this and they did, still, the score is not as good as it is on other sites I am using, for example, Generate Press.

So now when I want to put effort and revive the site I am asking for, I am trying to decide was enough speed improvement so I should concentrate on other stuff?

This is why I am asking about what people consider good enough based on EXPERIENCE, which means that with that score, they can rank well. Hard and specific question, I know, but still, trying to get a better idea before I waste more time.

nope, I've paid some people to do what they can with warnings and reduce load time. I am aware theme is old and not ideal but I am not ready to change it because I know conversions with proper traffic and I think they are great

I rank well on organic searches on Google.

Organic search is my #1 traffic channel and it is for model names and scenes.

PageSpeed although not an official factor on SERP it definitely has an impact.

Years ago I upgraded my dedicated server to LiteSpeed Enterprise with Redis Object caching which gave my site sub 20 ms TTFB.

The speed boosted my organic searches since people want instant gratification.

Huh...I am using it for years now. I know in the beginning there was a compatibility problem but now it should probably be solved.

I normally shoot for mid 80's if I'm setting up a new site, or low 90's, but... quality links still win the game.

this is the answer I was looking for. Precise answer at what point do you consider that the speed optimization process is done and then you concentrate on other stuff.

So as always, damn links. I've checked today and lost most of them, people are simply removing them, changing site layouts. losing domains. etc.

The real question is where and how to get relevant links but I guess no one will say it publicly.
