If not a Cybertruck, what to drive?
What kind of cars do you like to see folks driving? What kind of car do you prefer to drive? Big, small, gas, electric, hybrid, specific color, kind of seat, fast acceleration, safety, mileage, distance, 8 cylinder, tinted or untinted windows, whatever specs matter to you. Like, not what is your dream car only legal to drive on a track or something, but what sort of ride makes you feel positive about the driver or do you enjoy.
Are there types of cars that make you think the owner is likely a douche or likely a loser or likely a bad driver or just someone you would not like? (I ask because I have a Cybertruck on pre-order, but, for a variety of reasons, I think I want to get something else some time soon, and I am at a loss as to what to get. My preference would be an electric or hybrid Town Car, but Lincoln apparently does not care what I want and has not made one.)

All Your Design Needs

I've got a Lexus GX 460 and love it. It's got a V8 and is an AWD/4x4 tank. I bought it for its reliability by Toyota and the fact that it can tow our camper, which's 4500 lbs., and still haul all of our stuff for vacations and my kids sports. The dealer gave me an incredible price and lifetime warranty I couldn't refuse.
My in-laws also live in Upstate NY, so we travel in the snow and ice, and it does really well in those conditions. The only downside is that it doesn't get the best gas mileage. One thing I really like about it is that it has a really nice sound system with Mark Levinson audio. It's so crystal clear and crisp. The first thing I do when I get a new vehicle is tint my windows. I don't like people looking in at me or my family, and it helps so much with the heat on the interior of the vehicle too.

Jeep Grand Cherokee.
I know Jeeps are not known for their dependability, but I bought my first Jeep Grand Cherokee used in 2012 and it lasted to 288k miles. It was the most dependable car I've ever owned. I replaced it with a 2016 Jeep grand Cherokee 75th Anniversary Edition and it's fantastic. Just the right size, good for a daily driver, long trips, family vacations, and can go anywhere. We also have a Tesla. We bought the Tesla in September of last year (I think) and my wife drives it sixty miles a day and because we have solar it's cost us nothing. That's fantastic.

I drive mostly Uber and Bus. And I drive an ugly Hyundai from 2006 in Holland.
With an old 16 year old TomTom to see where the roads where 15 years ago. It drives hardly 1000 kilometer a year. Can drive for on another 20 years. No big brother on the passenger seat.

![]() Cost me $500 during COVID in 2021, came with snow tires and I used it to move from Vancouver to Kelowna. Blew the head gasket, swapped it in an underground parking lot by jacking up the cylinder head via the exhaust system, slipped the old gasket out, new one in, 40 minutes later it was running great again! Head gasket blew again, but it's running fine for 3+ years now, no oil changes, I just top it up. When I needed to do the brakes, they were $10 on RockAuto. The engine just does not stop running and everything works. I drove it to the liquor store in -29c weather and it started no problem, although the 5 speed manual was like churning butter because the oil was mostly frozen. As far as NEW cars go? Cybertruck is by far the coolest new vehicle, but any vehicle with excessive screen-size and computer do-dads is just annoying as shit. The simpler, the better, shit I'd rock a Model-T if I could afford one.

Rivian is solid. Been driving them but don't own one. One got into a head on collision with a Silverado recently and the Rivian driver was fine while the other guy died.

To be blunt, as time goes by, the more I'm hesitant about anything new other than Toyota, Honda or Subaru.
I've got a modest little Chevy HHR, and have been blessed that it's done so well (granted, it's over 20 years old with less than 100k on it). My biggest beef with electric is the auto industry did it's best to complicate one of the easiest cars to build. Electric doesn't need a clutch for a manual transmission, so no trying to learn stick. Motors are easier to replace and have more torque. Conversion hobbyists have been charging their home made EVs in garages, no Tesla station required. Hybrids are a much better option than EV, but the industry is messing those up too. I loved the feel of the Ford Fusion, but the mechanics I knew hated it. What I love about you're stomping grounds in Vegas is how much rebuilt old school Detroit iron is over there. My first choice would be a restored/rebuilt 1960s almost anything. They're still much less expensive than new cars, look fantastic, haul ass, and are easier to fix.

Bruh it took less than an hour to swap the head gasket and the van keeps going!!! No heat because the gasket has a hole in one cylinder and can't keep the heater full, but it can drive for hours with no issues... it seals up once the motor is at operating temps.
These old Chrysler engines are sooooooo bulletproof!!!

Yeah got to love older cars, they were really built to last. So many modern cars are total junk. Just look at what rolls into junkyards daily, TONS of cars from like 2004-2012 get scrapped! Less than 20 years old and gettin' scrapped like crazy!

What's sad to me now is how Mercedez and BMW, two top luxury cars that were known for reliability and ease of repair in the 80s, are now overcomplicated and not worth maintaining over 100k. Car Wizard refused a rebuild on Hoovie's BMW V-12 because there were too many cars (including Hoovie's other cars) in the shop, and it was too much of a pain even for him.

Lot of metal between me and the road. Room to load up with photo equipment that can be locked away. The locked away part generally eliminates SUVs. I don't much like seats I have to drop down into. And I'd prefer that people did not have some dickhead thing to say about my ride whenever I roll up because, no matter what vehicle I have, my ride will never be the most interesting thing about me.

My neighbour at the last place I lived, had a newish Audi just out of warranty and his vehicle leaked more oil than my 30+ year old minivan does, but to fix it he was quoted something crazy like 6k! Definitely need to pay to play when out of warranty if you can't do it yourself...

With the kids I have now I drive a Town and Country van. It's really nice and dependable - taken us across country - down to Florida and out to Nova Scotia. Great memories.
If I had would prefer a hybrid with the same features and capacity yet if I had my chance - I miss my Mustang GT so would get that again. Not a big fan of super expensive cars because they'll get stolen fast or marked up. My wife though drives a smaller car and is looking into a hybrid later this year.

Based on your preferences, it sounds like you're looking for a vehicle that offers a sense of security with ample cargo space for your photo equipment, while still maintaining a level of understated elegance. Here are a few options to consider:
Station Wagon or Estate Car: These vehicles typically offer a lot of metal between you and the road, providing a sense of security. They also offer plenty of cargo space in the back, which can be locked away for added security. Models like the Audi A4 Allroad or Volvo V60 Cross Country could be good choices. Sedan with a Large Trunk: Some sedans offer spacious trunks where you can store your photo equipment securely. Look for models like the BMW 5 Series or Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which provide both luxury and ample cargo space. Luxury Hatchback: While you mentioned not preferring SUVs, some luxury hatchbacks offer the security and cargo space you need without the bulkiness of an SUV. The Audi A5 Sportback or BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe could be worth considering. Luxury Crossover: If you're willing to consider something slightly larger than a sedan but still want to avoid the typical SUV, you might find a luxury crossover like the Volvo XC60 or Lexus RX to be suitable. These vehicles offer elevated cargo areas and often have options for securing your equipment. Regardless of which type of vehicle you choose, make sure to test drive a few options to see which one feels most comfortable and suits your needs best. And remember, your choice of vehicle is a reflection of your practical needs and preferences, not just a status symbol.

A HEARSE!! You could even cover the back windows with signage for Blue Blood!! Heck, get a deal with a body shop and you could change the signage regularly for your franchises and write the work off your taxes. Look Chang... you gotta drive a 2021+ Ford Expedition... the 400 hp 3.5 turbo engine and the 10 speed transmission... freaking gigantic ass truck is faster than a Cobra Mustang of only 20 years ago, stops like a Ferrari, and handles like a sportscar. Doing 180 on the highway here was like next to nothin'!

Doing 180 KPH (hitting the speed limiter on the highway ) felt like doing 90 KPH in my minivan! Fucking incredible vehicle. The only issue is that the 10 speed transmission shifts like shit and slammed into gear repeatedly. Could just be an abused rental car thing, though.

I've been driving a Gladiator for a while. Recently had to take it to the shop for some work after some fun times in the mountains, so I dug an old 2015 Subaru Impreza out of the garage until I got my Gladiator back.
Gladiator is now in the garage with the rest of my vehicle hoardings, I fell back in love with my lil hatchback subie. Might get a crosstrek next, basically a taller Impreza. |

The Audi TT AWD, modified, was good competition for my S2000 NA!
When I upgraded my S2000 with a Vortech supercharger, I smoked TT's... but I did get into a race with a modded AWD TT that was pretty neck-and-neck. The TT was super popular in Vancouver at the time and everyone thought it looked futuristic as fuck! I still like them.
