The goal is to gain members and keep them. Most of these people could give a shit on what the site looks like... all they want are the nekid girlies..... I really do not think they care about your flash, dhtml or color scheme.

Actually, what you need to be concerned with is that the navigation is set correctly. Making it very easy for your visitors to find what they came for... that should be the most important thing you worry about, then the content and then the design.
