Barry Bonds is an idiot

http://espn.go.com/mlb/allstar03/s/2...6/1581348.html

Desired target in homer assault: Ruth

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

CHICAGO -- Barry Bonds keeps climbing the home run charts, edging closer to Willie Mays' mark and drawing more and more questions about whether he will break Hank Aaron's record.

Bonds, however, is also taking aim at The Babe.

? In the baseball world, Babe Ruth's everything, right? ?
? Barry Bonds

The San Francisco slugger leads the majors with 30 home runs at the All-Star break and has hit 643 in his career, putting him just 17 shy of matching his godfather -- Mays -- for third on the all-time list.

"Willie's number is always the one that I've strived for," Bonds said before Tuesday's All-Star Game.

"And if it does happen, the only number I care about is Babe Ruth's. Because as a left-handed hitter, I wiped him out. That's it. And in the baseball world, Babe Ruth's everything, right? I got his slugging percentage and I'll take his home runs and that's it. Don't talk about him no more."

Ruth hit 714 home runs, a mark that stood for many years until Aaron came along. Aaron finished with 755, but Bonds said "755 isn't the number that's always caught my eye."

At 38, Bonds' drive to reach Aaron has been slowed a bit by his high walk total. With each year, the daily grind of playing left field might take its toll, too. Bonds has said recently that he would welcome playing for an AL team -- he's specifically mentioned the Angels -- as a full-time DH once his contract with the Giants is up.

"The toughest thing about getting older is playing defense. That is where you get hurt. Guys can hit from a wheelchair," said Cubs manager Dusty Baker, Bonds' former manager. "I always thought someday Barry might be a first baseman or a DH."

The AL beat the NL 7-6 to gain home-field advantange for the World Series.

Barry should keep his mouth shut. He hurts his legacy everytime he opens his mouth.

A black man wants to beat Babe Ruth's record? Is that legal under the Patriot Act?

Someone call John A-s-h-c-r-o-f-t and have this guy locked up before he ruins America!

He's going after Ruth, but not Aaron.

Bonds is racist!

While I agree Bonds is an asshole I see nothing wrong with that article. So what's the big deal about it?

He basically is trying to say Ruth is/will be worthless. I'd like to see that fool or any other of today's prima donnas crowd the plate and wear all that fucking body armor bullshit back in the day. Today's players in baseball are wimps and whiners compared to the old guys.

He will go down as the greatest baseball player of all time.. his numbers are AMAZING..

But if A-Rod is able to play till he is 40, then he will probably catch Bonds totals..

Ted Williams and Joe Dimaggio were 2 of the biggest A-Holes of all time..

Maybe being a Dick is the key to their success!

The Biggest Dick ever in Baseball was Ty Cobb.

No one liked him, but everyone said he was a great player, and being a Ass in no way hurt his playing or stats

yup and would even attack his own teammates and one time attacked a fan in a wheelchair.

dirty, rotten, miserable...but one of the best

I think a lot of what Bonds says is mainly just to incite the media...he loves to get them wound up.

At least the old timers played the game drunk, the way it was meant to be played.

Found this in Google:

Consider this:
Bonds, as a homerun hitter is simply overrated. Bonds has had over 50 home runs once in his entire major league career. (Sosa, on the other hand, has been over 50 four times and had 49 once). All of this has also occurred in the era of the super-juiced ball.

Prior to the 2001 season, Mr. Bonds averaged nearly 37 homeruns per 162 games (and he never played the full 162 games once). Yet, in 2001, he hit double his previous career average. Given his obvious growth in size and any sense of honest reality, it's clear that his 2001 explosion is attributable to drug enhancement (Brady Anderson, anyone?). I don't claim to know how long or how much Barry has used enhancing drugs, but I'm certain that he does use them. It's certainly not as romantic to consider that Barry uses enhancing drugs, but it's a reality. Arguments to the contrary aren't even worth my time. It's obvious, he uses them. Get used to the idea.

He had 8 seasons with a batting average below 300 (and a career 295 average, solid by today's standards, but certainly nothing spectacular)

In the last 5 years, Bonds has had RBI totals of: 122, 83, 106, 137, 110. Sammy Sosa, however, has had 158, 141, 138, 160, 108. So, put simply, in the last 5 years, Sosa has had 147 more RBIs than Bonds and beat Bonds in every single individual year, except for last year, when Bonds finished ahead by 2. That's an enormous difference.

Post season, yuk! Bonds, with the one exception of last year, has been one of the worst post season hitters in the history of baseball. Prior to last year, his career post-season average was: 196 1 6 over 97 at bats in 27 games. If you are curious as to how that averages out, it is 6 homers and 36 RBIs per 162 games - far from anything spectacular

Barry is not a team player. He never performs well under the pressure of post-season play. Throw in the attitude and personal issues, not to mention that everyone on his team can't stand him and you have an overrated, arrogant pain.

Modern baseball = small parks, juiced balls, drugs

Babe will still be Babe when it's all done. Babe is still Babe now. (and Aaron has had the record for awhile)

Was that from a dominican newspaper ?
Do you remember Sosa a few years back......Before he gained 40 lbs. ? Excuse me he only gained 39lbs........the other 1lb was the CORK in his bat !! Don't just look at hitting......look at everything if you want a comparison. Sosa can't hold Barry's jock !!

I agree with the Sosa thing totally, the post was just interesting about the drug thing. Obviously written by a Sosa fan with his head up his ass.

Something the Bind hater in that article forget is that in addition to his home runs, Bonds ia also the ONLY man in history to have 500+ homers and 500+ stolen bases.

Bonds RBI totals are misleading because for the first part of his career, he was a leadoff hitter and we also walks more than anyone else, so that will cut into his RBI totals.

Bonds has also done all of this in a lot less at bats (due to all of the walks). He also strikes out significantly less than babe Ruth did and Sammy Sosa does.

I'm not slamming Sammy, he's definitely earned his place as one of the elite in the game as well.

Both players have obviously gained power and strength through conditioning ad well as I'm sure performance enhancers.

I have to wonder though....would the greats like Babe Ruth, Cy Young, Ty Cobb, Joe Dimaggio, Ted Williams etc. have been able to stand up to the media scrutiny that players face today?

When Babe Ruth played the sports writers were very reverent in how they treated him and his heavy partying wasn't as big of a story. If Babe Ruth played today, would he have put up the same numbers with the media pressure players have today? Would his womanizing be as accepted today as it was then?

The game has changed, but with all the greats, the numbers will always speak for themselves.
