Damn shame we can't have guns here in Aus. Whats the law like over there if you shoot someone breaking into ur home ? I'm assuming that as long as they dont trip over a toy and hurt their ankle you can shoot them without recourse.

All they took was a garage door opener and a mailbox key. The opener has been reprogrammed and the mailbox lock rekeyed. Spent the afternoon getting car alarms installed on both the boys' vehicles.

Cops took pics and fingerprints, but likely nothing will come from it. Now I'm freaking that they're gonna try to come in the house.
Sorry to hear about that PK. You've done a lot for us guys in the biz over the years. Doesn't seem fair at all.

Never shy away from security systems and even an 'armed' response team. You're a bigshot in the biz so you can afford that extra per month to have things handled. It'll give you piece of mind too.

I'm a dog and shotgun fan. Two things that no burglar wants to face is a set of teeth and buckshot.

Don't lose your cool, be thankful no one was hurt and keep your chin up.

PK,

I would suggest putting up some small hidden cameras that face the door they came in, etc. When they come back they will get caught on camera. They have some that come on/start taping when motion is detected. That way it is not taping the entire time.

I had a break in about a year ago, nothing was taken. They came in the back garage door and the alarm was going off (about midnight). They then opened the kitchen door going out into the garage. My 6 year old son ran into our room after the alarm woke him up and said he heard someone in the garage talking. Basically they were seeing if someone would get up, etc. I was too busy running to get my gun out of the lock box and get a flashlight, by the time my son came in. They took off. The cops were there within a few minutes and got some foot prints, finger prints.

Now I even keep the alarm on my car while its in the garage, I also installed a few more locks on the back door, I installed another lock on the door going into the garage from the kitchen and lock it nightly.

Good thing for the alarm or thing's could have been alot worse.

Good luck with getting everything take care of, and definitely use it as a learning experience.
Get one of these.

I have a friend with a couple of kids in the house so he bought this to keep his pistol in so the kids couldn't get to it but he could still get to it quickly if necessary. It's awesome. You can enter the combo in total darkness and the pistol just falls right into your hand.

if a robber wants your stuff, and has enough knowledge and skills.. they'll get it.. same with people stealing cars.. by installing alarms, locks, getting dogs, etc.. its mainly to deter the robber for a short time.. but if they really wanetd something, theyd get it..

what happend to you PK is a shame because its probably someone you know, and they knew how your alarms / garage were set up.

Rremember to keep your expensive belongings in a industrial style safe (hooked up to a home security system like a.d.t.)..

my jewelry store safes are all rigged this way with our security company within reach as well as local police.. motion sensors throughout the shop, as well as sensors on doors.. plus a few surprises

have your kids be aware of any strange activies friends might be in.. they might know the persons.. it would be good to know in the future ncase something happens again

Thanks all. It's been a crazy couple of days. In talking to my security company, they told me that unless there were problems in my area or I suspected problems, it seemed a bit over the top to install cameras at this point. He told me that only cameras that are date and timestamped can be used in court.. and even then often you can't clearly identify the person in the pictures. We've changed some of our habits here. Gonna leave a few lights on that normally are on when I'm up (like my office light). Any of my kids good friends know that we keep odd hours. As it was the night it happened I didn't go to sleep until after 3:30 am. It gets daylight around here after 5:30am so it's likely they came in that 2 hour window.

Cop who took the fingerprints says that they have results back in about 2 weeks so I should know then if who I suspect left any prints.

Scariest thing.. In August I'm going to be on vacation. I could care less about the house and the contents.. but now I'm going to have to board all my kitties instead of just the oldest two. I'm fearful that if someone broke in they'd leave a window or door open or broken and my critters would be gone.

I will likely get a local security company to come by a couple of times a night while I'm away.

invest in a shotgun, or a couple of mastiff's

while your on vacation have a relative or friend stay in your house a couple of nights, and get those things that turn your lights on and off, some of them can be set to differant times every night of the week.

motion sensing lights are also a good idea, expecially when you get them not only in the places where people would need light, but also in the places where no one should be, so if they are trying to bypass the known owns, another one pops on.

big dogs and guns are definatly the scariest. on less of course your dealing with crackheads.

oh yea, forgot to mention. if they want in there isnt a thing in the world that will stop them, there are people that will break in knowing full well there is an alarm, it just shortens thier window so they have to get the most expensive stuff. unless there is one thing on your list.

but id say about 50/50 on robberies being someone you know.

i used to live by a golf course, clubs and all kinds of other stuff was ALWAYS missing from outside the house and in garages left open. and a lot of them got robbed as well.

sad part is, when they caught a some of the people doing it, they were jr. high aged kids doing it while skipping school. mostly stealing laptops, and cd's.
