Welcome to Las Vegas, U-turn capital of the world

I just returned from a rushed trip to Vegas. If I were to sum up Vegas in one sentence that sentence would be: "You are allowed to make U-turns." Not just allowed, encouraged. Let me tell you, as a product of less progressive states such as Florida and Ohio, this whole U-turn thing was quite a shock to me. We're all used to signs and pavement markings that use arrows to indicate things like "straight only" and "left turn only". Well, in Las Vegas there is actually a U-turn indication sign. It looks like an arrow with extreme spinal curvature. So, the left lane on any given Vegas street often has a sign or a pavement marking with three arrows: straight, left and U-turn.

It's a good thing that U-turns are legal in Vegas. Every street in the entire city of Las Vegas is eight lanes wide and divided down the middle. If you couldn't make U-turns you would be forced to continue driving straight until you disappeared into the desert never to be heard from, again. I am sure Vegas is not the only place in the world with these U-turn signs but they are EVERYWHERE in Las Vegas.

On a side note, driving in Las Vegas sucks. Is this related to the U-turns? I don't know but I propose to study that in Phase II of my move to Las Vegas.

Dirty_DS, I'm sorry I didn't contact you. It was nice of you to offer to hang out with me and my girlfriend but we ended up being so busy we barely had time to eat.

I've just always done uturns in minnesota
I know some places you can't
I guess I didn't notice driving in Las Vegas about the u-turns, just cause I can do it where I am from. I did notice a lot of 2+ lane left turn lanes, and very wide streets.

I don't mind the driving in Las Vegas so much except during peak traffic hours on the main streets near the strip, very hard to change lanes. Yes I have heard people I know that live there talk about the U-TURNS and also about all the accidents and crazy drivers. I heard people drive crazy when it rains like a couple inches.

Uturns are illegal most of the east cost (ohio included), in most places. Vegas decided due to the mass # of terrible drivers here that the city would erect medians on most major highways so that the idiot drivers would only need to look one way before pressing on the gas. I guess it's helped on the accident #s, so u-turns are now a way of life.

I think its this way in a lot of the west - texas too.

Here in Vegas the only time you cant make a u-turn is if there is a sign saying its prohibited.
Otherwise, if you dont see a sign saying not to, you can assume you can do it.

Yeah, that's pretty cool actually. I was doing the U-turn thing a helluva lot when I was there last weekend getting lost amidst the construction in the SW.

What if your driving on your street like mine, a blvd, and your house it across the street, and there's a divider in the middle? at the next stop we make a u turn, if that was illegal, it would be a pain in the ass, or do what my friend does with his 4x4, he just turns left and drives over the divider to turn into my driveway
