I was in Court the other day

Witnesses pay more when they speak up then criminals do. I witnesses a hit and run with a car and a parked van several months ago. I took down the licence plate of the car so the police could match the paint and they got a 100% match. The women who did the hit and run denied she did it. I gave the police a description of her and it matched what she looked like and she still pled not guilty. So a trial was set and myself and the woman who?s parked van got hit (she wasn?t even there) got summoned to court. The lady that hit her came into court and still pled not guilty to the crown attorney. The crown attorney pointed out that he had 2 witnesses present and physical evidence matching her car's paint to the van that got hit. He had her 100% nailed to the wire on a serious charge of leaving the scene of an accident. So what does the crown attorney do, he offers to reduce the charge to imprudent driving, 2 demerits and a $72 fine. The woman caused over $1800 in damage and two people were pulled out of work for a ½ day. I drove into Winnipeg from Arborg (and only offered 9 cents a km from this, not even 1/3 of my milage cost) and lost almost a full day of work time. Had she gotten a $500 fine I would have felt a wee bit better, but $72! Since there was 2 people summoned the crown attorney basically just told me my day was worth $36. I lost more money writing down the licence plate of the car that hit the van than the person who actually hit the van,.as did the innocent woman who?s Van got hit. I think this crown attorney needs to have his position reviewed, as after this why would ANYONE EVER want to bear witness to any incident of property destruction since it costs a LOT MORE to be a witness than the criminal has to pay if they get caught and convicted! Who really got punished.........

Yeah Sleazy, Never get involved with the system any more than you have too. It will always slow and bring you down. I've learned this through experience over and over.

That's crazy! I'd take her to civil court, if the crown attorney refuses to charge her, I'd take it personally and collect for my time myself.

Court systems are nuts. I was in traffic court with my kid a while ago and there was a 45-50ish lady there on her THIRD DUI in 5 years. She had "escaped" from a treatment center, took a cab home, got in her car and went out and got drunk again.

She was a retired teacher and had a niece who said she'd "help take care of her". She got a $500 fine and her license suspended for a year.

HELLO??!! She had a suspended license when she got the third DUI! This woman just plain didn't care. Throw her butt in jail, sell her car and give it to the state to help fund her jail stay.

And here my son is taking all this in - great example to give to a kid.

You actually did an honorable thing, I applaud you for it. Just remember, YOU did the right thing, regardless of how shitty the courts handled the case.

If someone had hit your car and ran, wouldnt you be happy that someone saw it and reported the person that damaged your property?

My hit & run has cost me over $30k already. Thats not mentioning the fact that I'm in a wheelchair now and have endured excrutiating pain, and a surgery to have a steel plate and 6 screws put in my knee. And I'm still looking at 7 more months of recovery, according to my doctor.

Luckily for me, the accident happened at a very busy intersection, and even though it was at midnight, two of the witnessess have stepped forward and said they could identify the driver of the truck that hit me. U-Haul has already given his information to the LVPD and they are moving forward on the case, since hit & run with injuries is a felony here. I dont think this guy will be getting off with a $72 fine.... he's gonna be a guest of the state for quite a while, according to the detectives that are prosecuting him.

I'm glad there are people out there like you that will step forward with information when they witness a crime.

I belive you benifit from your rights to freedom and your right to a fair trial everyday... so I'm sure loseing one days work is worth that isn't it?

After all you could live in some 3rd world country and not have the right to go to court.. In some countries you could be killed or put in jail just for viewing the very pages most of us deal with everyday. So I would think giving up a day or two of your time is worth that isn't it, even if it is just traffic court?

My best wishes to your recovery. It's hit and run stories like this that make you really wonder about the finer things in life. I hope that bastard gets caught and spends a lot of time enjoying the finer luxuries of a nevada prison cell.
