Snapshot camera recommendations (PICS)

So I shoot with studio lights and big ol' cameras for actual content for my sites and magazines, but I've been kind of wanting to have more snapshots of my adventures. Tried borrowing a few different cameras from friends and totally liked taking pix, but haven't found a snapshot camera I definitely like yet.

I want something with a decent number of megapixels.

I want something as small and lightweight as possible.

I want something where I can select the settings at the beginning of the night and then point and shoot and have it be pretty automatic.

Good in lowlight situations would be a plus.

I don't care how much it costs.

These examples were shot with different cameras, but basically, I want it for silly pix like these with around this level of picture quality:

So what should I get?

She is Blue Blood's newest contract girl and one of my favorite people on the planet and the hair matches her shirt in this picture. She is allowed to change the color though and often does. She is really talented with stuff like that.

How old are you?

What kinds of digital snapshot cameras do you like?

Probably the best small compact cameras with great quality are Canon something around 3 megapixels these days. Maybe one of the Digital Elph lines.

I tried one camera in the Elph line because most of my film cameras are Canon, but that one at least was kinda big. Any thoughts on specific itsy bitsy models from Canon?

Hmm, that one looks promising. I think that might be what Lange had at the Summit. If he would just get around to emailing me some pix, I would have a better idea of picture quality. (hint, hint)

Any idea what the dimensions on that are? Canon's site says smallest digital camera as of Aug 2002 which sounds like maybe it is not so small.

Well you can get smaller sure but you won't keep Canon quality. Trust me on this one anyone that knows digital cameras knows that Canon is quality. Because you'll be able to maintain some ISO setting and various other options for all conditions. Basically it fits in the palm of your hand.

Assuming I don't go out again now and make my cold worse, maybe I will go look at cameras in person tomorrow. Was kinda hoping to just order one online tonight, but I guess it wouldn't kill me to leave the house in the daytime.

For an around the town camera get a Canon Powershot G3, they are very nice with 4.1MP and have a nice quality image. The body of the camera kinda small but the price may get you, I beleive they run $599 to $750, but well worth it for a nice quality camera, we had the Powershot G2 and it was very nice.

You could trust me and order that one but if you want to go look that's probably not a bad idea, just beware of getting salesman who knows less about it than I do to bullshit you into something else.

Hope you're feeling better soon though.

A Powershot G3 is not small at all when you're looking for something to stick in your pocket or purse like Amelia is looking for but it's a great camera for sure.

Image quality control and specs look nice, but it looks sorta big. I don't care at all how much it costs. I don't buy myself that many treats and I've been a hard little worker this fall.

I think I might want a camera that doesn't exist yet. Ya know, image quality like a digital back for a Hassie in the shape of a hidden cam in a ballpoint pen.

No more James Bond for me.

Any other suggestions, folks?

Totally, compared to studio equipment, it is all super petite, but I just want something easy to take to nightclubs and such and not that difficult to slip in and out of my purse.

Thanks. I hate being sick. I feel like I should just be able to push myself and mind-over-matter it, but it doesn't always work.

I know what you mean about salesmen who know dickall. A lot of times I like to see the equipment, but, at least in LA, all photo store personnel have to prattle on about how important they are and what big jobs they have done. Even though they are working at the photo store. The last time I was buying a digital camera, the salesman would not shut up about his most recent shoot and after he talked about stuff unrelated to the specs I needed and kept trying to sell me cheap cameras which didn't meet my requirements at all, I finally just exploded and was like I'm buying this for a job for Playboy so is there someone here who can sell me a more expensive camera please. Totally stupid too because they work on commission. Guy was pissed when I really did buy it from another rep.

AmeliaG,

what you need is one of the Casio EXILIM line cameras! the best camera around for snapshots - go for S3 or Z4 models.

3.2 - 4M resolution
really, really lightweight - S3 is just 70g
good on lowlight too
Z4 has pretty nice zoom feature as well...

check'em out here:

http://www.exilim.com

hope this helps

thank you

This looks good for a semi-shaded shot:

Any idea where there might be some lowlight examples online?
The size of that thing rules!

I'll say it a million times you can't beat the Canon digital cams unless maybe you get a high end Olympus.

Amelia when it comes to light situations the most important feature on a digital camera as I mentioned earlier is the ISO setting feature. Whether it's user selectable and what range you have to choose from. For example the Casio Z3 has an ISO range from 50 to 200 which is average the Canon has a user selectable range from 50 to 400 which allows of much better use in many different lighting situations low light to extremely bright as well as built in spot metering.

Oh yeah the Canon is 3mm thicker which is nothing and about 60grams heavier which is nothing as well.

and you are right - the size is simply awesome, the S3 is lighter even than my cellphone and I consider it light too

Also the light sensitivity of S3 goes up to 640 ISO units, more than most cameras around ( the industry standard is around 400 I think )

not sure where you can find lowlight pics though...I guess I can upload some later today ( if I have some time left to dig'em out...we are leaving to Prague tomorrow and it is really hectic around ). But it is pretty good in lowlight conditions as I said before...

Amelia this is the best digital camera review site that exists so check it out. He has several samples pics at different resolutions and lighting as well. The Z4 ISO goes up to 400 actually. The S3 looks interesting, I just hate SD memory when compact flash is the standard.

Looks like overkill on the specs which I always favor, but it looks pretty big. Not really a purse cam I think. Although it is always hard to really gauge size from pix.

I have a canon s330 and its great. I bring it around in my purse everywhere.. My roommate got a Nikon Cool Pix 3100 .. its super tiny and takes great shots .. although I havent had a chance to play with it much. Good luck!

Thanks so so much for all the helpful input everyone! I'm going to go look at some cameras in person in a couple hours and tonight my bro is going to send me examples of what is available in Japan now. Think I will buy the camera Monday. I'm feeling too under-the-weather to have any adventures worth documenting right now anyway.

I think you need a canon powershoot s50 (the one I have too of course )
5MP and way smaller than g2,g3. it has the same processor (dgic) but it has 5MP instead of 4.

just got back from a trip, I'll post some pics in few mins.

actually Z4 has up ISO 200. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/spec...casio_exz4.asp

SONY Cybershot P10 rules in terms of 5 Megapixels that fit in your pocket. It's amazing in low light - focuses with IR.

dpreview is really a good site, but Z4 light sensitivity goes up to ISO 400:

I'd say G3... great for a snapshot camera, but... ya never know when you'll wanna take some pro pics with it... and it'll do that too. =)

I'm probably gonna end up getting a new rebel EOS... or D100, but leaning toward the canon
