Is Google becoming the Walmart of the Internet?

IMO, Google has a grasp of the net better than Microsoft - when you consider that all of MicroSoft's net ventures can be launched to it's existing customer base (which basically IS the net)... google had to start from scratch -- a user base of 0.

But now the tables have turned... and the scary part is everyone basically loves google (vs not so much love for MicroSoft)

Google is being put into a HUGE place of power here...

And with their move to Email/Webmail, their power is going to grow exponentially.

Google will have the power to influnce online purchasing decisions before nearly everyone else...

If google started auctions.google.com do you think eBay would shit bricks?

Or dating.google.com, or whatever.google.com..... bottom line is they would dominate whatever they go after.

Whatever market they want - they can have or they can have major influence over.

I think you underestimate the minds at Google Inc.

Think about what they did to the search engine industry or what they are in the process of doing to the advertising industry now (with their text link strips).... when they go gunning for something they get it.

If google lauched auctions you could bet that however it worked, it would be a much better deal for sellers and buyers.

And don't forget payments.google.com

(gotta have that paypal clone to work with your eBay clone)

Great comment, Kitty. I agree. Google should grow in measured paces and definitely maximize their current models before moving on to others. Moving too fast for them might result in losing quality...hence, credibility.

I think its *usually* unavoidable.

The bigger you get the less direct control the original brains have over the indvidual operations....

But then again, Google seems to be a very different company than most.

I think the people that work for Google really love to work there and love to be a part of that whole thing. They are making history after all

One thing to consider is most of the companies (during the dot com days) were obliterated by going public. I don't know if its the billions of dollars that go to their heads, or the constant pressure from the public investors for more growth every quarter of every year -- but lots of companies just go looney when they get that money.

Google should be a different story though... since they have already demonstrated some control over the years they have been #1... I mean they could have been real shady about lots of things, but you really don't hear many bad things about Google or their business ethics.

So who knows... maybe this Google IPO that will undoubtedly rock the market might put a huge infusion of cash back into tech stocks and the stock market again.

Maybe we'll have another boom with people daytrading again all spawned from this IPO.

Google isn't going to be the best of the internet for everything. Yes, if they bring out a new product or service, everyone will love it, but it won't necessarily last.

Google grew so quickly because it offered a search engine that was a revolution in the SE world, it totally changed the way searches were done, and people loved the relevancy of the results.

They've gone from strength to strength with their search engine, and kept refining it. Still no one can match them.

Ebay did the same for online auctions. Can Google compete ? yeah, sure, but to last, they'd have to offer something pretty amazing that ebay didn't do.

Basically, they've cornered the SE market. How they are going to do that for anything else, is a real worry. Webmail not included, anyone can set that up these days.

Yeah... I don't use Froogle... is it any good? I probably would start using it all the time if I ever started to use it.

Same with local.Google.com... I would probably use the hell out of that too... that's a nice one

There is a big BIG difference with Google and eBay though.

Afaik, eBay was an accidental surprise success... starting as a mom & pop.... Ebay had so many growing pains it just wasn't funny.

I remember when they were public and HUGE, they had billions in market cap, and they were still having crazy NIGHTLY network outages all the time and using (afaik) old code that couldn't handle the volume of auctions

.... I mean you have a a few billion dollars in the bank hire a network god and programming god for $5000 a day and build a redudant network already. It was like they were refusing to hire someone good to run the show. I think they had a small number of employees back then too.. with BILLIONS in the bank.

IIRC, It got so bad there were press releases on the very subject for months.

Google on the other hand was started from the ground up by the very guys Ebay should have been hiring back in the day to design their network & software systems for $5000/day

I think if Google launched an auction service, ebay's stock value would probably be about 1/4 of what it is now in 2 years.

The basic way they are trying to compete against hotmail and the like with gmail is via the 1gig space limit. 1gig for them is nothing, they have 10000 servers all over the world, they have plenty of room to spare...

The 1gig limit is the ONLY reason why they might get big with gmail... maybe the interface will be fast too, that could very well be....

Be prepared to see AdSense ads next to your mails, lets hope Google will have one awesome spam-filter or it'll be FUN to spam google addys AND have matching adwords registered that get triggered by fun keywords in your spams.... double exposure!

Also be prepare to see AdSense ads on the bottom of all the mails you send out.. won't it be fun to talk to your friend about I don't know.. some problem you are having in your life and google placing adwords on your mail with links to some psychologist's website.. privacy concerns anyone?

I do not want a company that targets ads based on text on webpages to control my mail, reading everyone to target ads to them...

So what, it will be handled by script anyway. Afterall Microsoft/hotmail actually claim they 'own' any email sent through their system, and all rights to it.

Gmail will be so big that someone smart will make an open source, cross platform, front-end application for gmail that will send mails using standard uber encryption methods....

Let google try to target their ads to this:

I wonder if they will ban you for using encryption
