KRL how did you attain your marketing skills ? 20+ years of biz experience, trial and error, reading marketing books, from what thing did you learn the most about marketing ?

Also are there any books on marketing that you would recommend as a good read ?

Also any buisness books that you though where an excellent read, I already ordered Donald Trump - How To Get Rich

Excellent read for sure!!
Very true how you pointed out your worst business partnerships were in things you knew little about or played a passive roll in.

This is a great thread. I was reading it last night and was thinking about it all day today. I'm curious though, since you got into business in your early 20's, did you have any sort of post secondary education in marketing? Or did you learn everything on your own?

marketing education is garbage. you can pick up a few useful things but i have a few friends who majored in marketing and its bullshit.

at best it gives you a very basic knowledge of marketing and marketing research tools. then you know what areas you should look into to further your studies on your own.

a knowledge of psychology would help in understanding why people do certain things, but nothing beats experience.

KRL - you took a thread that most in your position would see as an insult, attack, or invasion of privacy and turned it into one of the top 10 threads in GFY history. I've had 5 people icq me or phone me today that mentioned this thread - that's never happened before.

impressive.

I read as much as I can about marketing techniques. A lot by trial and error. I also always had a knack for selling things.

Even when I was in high school and working part time at our local department store in the men's fashion dept, my sales were consistently 3 time higher than any other sales people. I always went out of my way to give my customers personal attention and got to know as many as I could on a first name basis so when they would come in to buy their clothes, they'd ask for me to pick things out for them. I was the only one that would straighten out the department displays so everything was meticulous while other sales people would just sit around pretending to be busy.
Sales is all about impressing potential customers that you know your products, will work hard for them, and will handle any problems that arise promptly.

That's always a problem for entrepreneurs because we tend to take on lots of projects and can easily become overwhelmed.

I've found the best way to hinder procrastination is to just take a little step and get part of what you need to do going. Then a little more and so on.

I also will go into supercharged mode if I get behind and will do 24 hours straight get the task at hand completely handled. without interruption.

one thing i will say about college, you can do a shitload of networking at a good school.

for what i want to do, you need a degree, so you do have to ask yourself why you want to go. you'll grow as a person in college and gain friendships and contacts that can last a lifetime.

I found colege distracting. I was an honor roll student in high school and Penn State was a 24 / 7 party school. My grades went to hell while I was there.

I'm a firm believer in the school of hard knocks and real world experience to really learn things.

I wish I had had someone with your brains as one of my siblings.

It was hard being the first born and getting the brains in the family. My brightness caused a lot of problems growing up and competing with my siblings who didn't get the same level of mind ability and they resented it and it caused a lot of friction between us.

KRL I know what you mean about girls and shoes and being with a dope looking honey that gets stares and guys macking her all time...

My question is...
Did having a girl like that bring much jealousy? If not what made you so confident that she wasn't going to do stuff behind your back?

Yes, in LA we had our own photo studio, got into adult video production briefly.

I've advertised our phone sex programs in all the major men's magazines. Hustler is the best if you ever decide to do print ads.

I've advertised in the National Enquirer, the Star, Cosmo, newspapers all over, etc.

We had a fishing hotline we advertised a lot on the radio and an astrology line on the radio too.

Advertised in the Wall St. Journal, Barrons, IBD, and a bunch of biz mags for our financial information lines.

Advertised on all the major cable networks, MTV, VH1, USA, and also on CBS, NBC and ABC for our kids entertainment, music, and adult lines.

You name I've probably advertised in it over the years. I'm a big believer in advertising.

My goal is to buy a superbowl ad for Men.com. I'm just worried it'll blowout the servers. LOL

My question is...
Did having a girl like that bring much jealousy? If not what made you so confident that she wasn't going to do stuff behind your back?
Ironically she helped me overcome being the jeaolous type. I no longer have an ounce of that trait in me. After a while I just started taking it as a compliment that guys were hitting on my wife all the time. That was the only way I could effectively deal with it.

She was honest and faithful throughout all our years together except at the very end when our marriage was heading south.

I was faithful the entire time and stayed faithful even in the very last days. I really hoped it was a phase she was going through and that we would patch things up. So even when we separated I didn't go out looking for anyone else.

Hi KRL,
I'm wondering, what do you think is more effective, I have a product that appeals to the general masses, What do you think has more profit margin? Print ads , 60 second infomercials?
30 second commercials?

This product has a 4x-5x profit over wholesale, I know infomercials must cost around 50-250k to make, so it is a high startup cost, but how would you recommend taking the plunge into print advertising, What kind of profit do you expect usually from a good product that does print advertising?

Do you like doing retail direct, or do you have experience selling to distributors?

Thanks

I'd really need info on the product to give you my advice. I'm inclined to say print ads.

KRL,
Yes, that was my opinion too, Reason why I would not go into infomercials but want to is because of the startup costs and entering into a market I have no expeirence in, I was looking at how GIRLSGONEWILDS advertising method, I think they make up a lot of it through playful methods with the merchant accounts for their broad tv ads
Whats your take on it :D Whats your take on cramming and all those other freaky stuff

If you play GGW's and other company's merchant method into online/print, Would be quite a profitable company, but I guess we've seen that already with quite a few adult companies.
Great advice you are handing out there, any comments would be cool espically on the CC stuff :D
