Title 17 of the IRS code states that income made outside of the united states is NOT taxable income..
The ONLY income that may be taxed is income earned within these united states..

So, no..
The sponsor is not reporting that income to the irs, neither should you...

However, that ONLY apllies if the check is made out to an individual..
If the check is made out to a company..a whole new set of rules comes into play..

I would suggest talking with an accountant about such matters.

As for spacedog's comments. You missed a major point big guy. The income IS made in the United States so it IS taxable. It's just paid by an offshore company.

if you generate income, you have to pay taxes on it. doesn't matter where your sponsor is.

i'm Canadian, but my company uses ibill. i'm hosted in the US. does this mean i don't have to pay taxes ;)

Income made outside of the US - up to like 80K is exempt.

HOWEVER - AND THIS IS THE BIG HOWEVER;

You have to BE IN THAT COUNTRY for it to be exempt.

Other exclusions requirements may apply - see your accountant for details.

I don't think it is a stupid question, but it just isn't going to work If it did - all the foreign sponsors would be getting much more business.

There are ways to reduce your tax burden. You may want to look into the book "Loopholes of the Rich", but most of it requires the use of a professional. You have to pay taxes one way or another - but you may be able to take advantage of certain perks if you have a corporation set up.

Offshore income is not taxable by the irs..
Do you really think that an offshore company is going to fucking send 1099's out for us webmasters..
Also, canadian webmasters are not required to pay any fucking taxes to us..

I dont know how canada's tax system works..so I can only tell you about us tax..

It's an offshore company..If you were paid as an individual, don't bother.. No one's gonna know..

Oh..Candid..

If you make $500 from a foreign country - you are probably right. No one is going to know.

However, if you are making real money - your chances of getting audited go up. How are you going to explain these deposits?

It is illegal - just because you probably will get away with it does not make it legal. Just because you don't get a 1099 doesn't mean you don't have to report it. You think 7-11s don't have to report their slurpy sales just because their customers don't 1099 them?

You might get away with it one year, even two, even forever. If you get caught - the IRS will go back through all your past returns and make you wish you had paid. Feel free to take the risk, but others will want to follow the law.

The only way foreign income is NOT taxable in the US is if the money never gets to the US. If the money lands in a bank account in the US, it's taxable in the US at whatever rates are applicable. Spacedog, your'e dead wrong bud. yes, there are certain exemptions and limits but you should see an accountant about it.

Trust me...I've been doing business overseas in this industry and others for years.

I got a check from a UK sponsor..
The check is a handwritten cashiers bank check..

DO you really think this gets reported to the irs..
Why would any sensible person do that..
There's no tangible records that the is has access too..

so fucking what if there's an audit..
They have to PROVE that you EARNED it..

I can go deposit 1 million $$$ into an account & the irs can audit me all fucking year long..
They have to PROVE that the $$$ was INCOME & where it came from!!!
Fuck..It's not that hard..

I live in one state & work in another..do you think I pay taxes to the state I live in for income I made in the other?? NO!!, Nor do I pay taxes to the latter..

I am saying as an individual..NOT A COMPANY!!!

What i suggested does NOT APPLY to companies..

Only individuals..
look it up..its in their own books..
IRS code title 17 damn it..
I studied the damn thing..

For those of us who have been audited, before

Innocent until proven guilty - criminal law

Guilty until proven innocent - Tax Law

They Assess you, they say you owe the governement $40,000.00, you have to prove them wrong,
and if they (the tax guys) are talking to you very nice and politely on the phone = it means they have something on you and they are very happy

if they are sounding quite annoyed on the phone = it means that they are still digging for info, and haven't quite got enough info, to nail your balls to the walls

There is no Title 17 - Title 17 has to do with copyrights. IRS code is Title 26. You have studied nothing but PUBLICATION 17. You need to study better as it specifically states:

---
Foreign income.
If you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien, you must report income from sources outside the United States (foreign income) on your tax return unless it is exempt by U.S. law. This is true whether you reside inside or outside the United States and whether or not you receive a Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement, or Form 1099 from the foreign payer. This applies to earned income (such as wages and tips) as well as unearned income (such as interest, dividends, capital gains, pensions, rents, and royalties).

If you reside outside the United States, you may be able to exclude part or all of your foreign source earned income. For details, see Publication 54, Tax Guide for U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad.
---
http://www.irs.gov/prod/forms_pubs/pubs/p1706h1.htm

Also, the site you point to has numerous books written by Lynne Meredith - whose office was raided by the IRS two - three years ago. She is a tax protestor - and although as far as I know she has yet to be tried - there are plenty of tax protestors rotting in jail for similar brilliant thoughts.

Bad attitude Spacedog...no offense, but after hearing how poor you are (dude, you don't even have a credit card), I would NOT take any tax advice from you. Spacedog, OF COURSE offshore income is taxable! That is one of the most lame things I've heard tonight. You do not know much about taxes, so please don't presume to give people such poor advice. Please mail me a postcard from jail in a few years.

Bottom line, PAY YOUR TAXES! As many others have pointed out, it doesn't matter where the income comes from (be it US or UK), if you earn the cash while you live in the US, then you need to pay taxes on it.

spacedog,

That little "loophole" where offshore income isn't taxable only applies if you are in that country when getting that income. If you are LIVING IN THE UNITED STATES you still have to pay taxes on that income, even if it is from an offshore company.

Also even if the sponsor doesn't send 1099s because they are offshore doesn't mean the IRS doesn't know. The bank will report your revenues even if the sponsor doesn't! So there goes that theory.

Of course you admitted to cashing your checks at a grocery store, which probably won't be reporting your revenues to the IRS.

For someone who claims to have been studying tax law for 10 years you're pretty laughable.

Maybe you should go and pay off those loans that you're franticly hiding from and try to rebuild that shit credit of yours before making such bold claims.

Spacedog, you are the most belligerent, arrogant newbie I've ever seen in the 4 years I've been in the business. All you seem to do is insult people...most of whom are much more experienced than you are. Get that chip off your shoulder and start behaving like a sane human being, instead of like someone who just escaped from the mental hospital. Geeze.

I could care less if you pay taxes or not (or if you end up in jail or not), but stop giving people such poor advice because you obviously do not know all the facts.

spacedog, i talked to the irs on the phone - 3 different people at the irs. you DO have to pay taxes on the income from other countries - UNLESS you paid taxes on it in another country.

you ARE committing a crime in this country if you earn and use your money here and do not pay taxes. or so says the irs.

Spacedog,

I'm not a big fan of the IRS, but you clearly don't know what you are doing. You aren't even responsible with money since your credit is totally fucked, why should anyone take tax advice from you?

The bottom line is you're WRONG. Basschick is 100% right about what she just said.

The IRS is wrong...

You only have to pay under certain circumstances..

You see..
With all the factors taken into account in the situation..

Some people go and never pay a fucking dime in taxes..

WHY!!
Exemptions, deductions, losses..
THAT is what determines if you pay or not!!

you people jump on my fucking ass for not including every minor fucking detail...
What, do I need to fucking write a whole fucking book for my point to be clear without some moron putting words in my mouth & twisting it all up & make it look like I meant one thing when I meant another..

WHATEVER..
I didn't fucking do tax seminars at Hesser college for nothing dumbass..

Spacedog, first off I'm not going to address every comment you made becaus they are each as stupid as each other. I do remember a post of yours telling everyone how you don't have a bank account and cant get one and cash your checks at a grocery store. Are you reporting all this income??.
Seriously you are about the stupidest person i have ever seen in this biz. Everytime you open your mouth you stick your foot in it .....But I will give you this, it's fun to hear the point of view from someone who rides on the short bus to the Grocery Bank..oops I meant the anti IRS check cashing booth.....

Are you talking about Hesser College located in Manchester, New Hampshire?

That "college" is a joke! You can be a high school drop out with no GED and still be accepted to Hesser College lol.

Hey Candid, hows it going Bro? Hope you and your gang are doing well..
Hey I thought that was Heffer College in Munchester NH ??..hehehhehe

Spacedog, just work hard, pay you taxes that are due, use all the legal loop holes you can legally, and don't worry about a thing. The fact of the matter remains the same, that IRS stands for nothing but
Internal Rectal Scraping...

It still doesn't change the fact that Hesser "college" is a joke college.

Also you weren't a professor, you were an instructor. BIG difference. Professors teach at universities and have at least a PHD.

Hope to see you around at Shop n Save sometime while you're cashing your check and while I'm doing my grocery shopping.

Spacedog, do you always find it necessary to use foul language to get your point across?? And maybe I owe you an apology, I bet you really do report all those foreign checks you cash at the grocery store as income to the IRS??..so "I'm sorry"...

and yet you morons continue to help this dope.

spacedunce is wrong on every count. calling the IRS wrong is kinda like calling me wrong. You still get smacked down in the end.
if the shit head doesn't pay taxes, its because he doesn't make enough to pay.

lets see, so far he was coming to vegas, suing me, worked for a huge lawfirm, was a college professor, understands the tax laws better than the IRS. Hey, did you ever walk on the moon?

I don't understand why you guys bother with this dope.
