A frightening bill goes before congress

It's called H. R. 1528

If Sensenbrenner?s bill is H.R. 1528 passes the government will demand that citizens ?spy? on their friends, family, co-workers and acquaintances. This bill uses the ?war on drugs? to threaten Americans with being put in prison if they ?don?t? report on others. If anyone fails to report to the police they can be thrown into prison for 2 to 20 years.

The passages from the bill that are most objectionable are--

?SEC. 425. (a) It shall be unlawful for any person who witnesses or learns of a violation of sections 416(b)(2), 417, 418, 419, 420, 424, or 426 to fail to report the offense to law enforcement officials within 24 hours of witnessing or learning of the violation and thereafter provide full assistance in the investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the person violating paragraph (a).

(b) Any person who violates subsection (a) of this section shall be sentenced to not less than two years or more than 10 years. If the person who witnesses or learns of the violation is the parent or guardian, or otherwise responsible for the care or supervision of the person under the age of 18 or the incompetent person, such person shall be sentenced to not less than three years or more than 20 years.'.?

This terrible threat is exactly what Stalin imposed on citizens of the former USSR when the USSR government demanded that citizens must ?spy? on their friends, family, co-workers, and acquaintances and report all kinds of things to the government. Millions of innocent people were reported to the USSR government for false misdeeds and were sent to USSR concentration camps because of these false reports.

This takes away the right of parents to deal with their own children regarding drug abuse but must report it to the police! If Sensenbrenner?s bill passes it would give the government more control over children than their parents and set family members against each other.

You can get the text of the bill for yourself with a Google search for ?house bill H.R. 1528? or go to

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill...bill=h109-1528

can you say land of the free?

not for much longer.

Can you imagine all the neighboor disputes escalating just because someone files a report to get them in trouble.

They wouldnt be able to handle the incoming reports in general.

Wow.. it's a harsher penalty if you're a parent/relative failing to report. I can see why 'theoretically' they'd want to implement something like that - the 'war on drugs' isn't getting any easier, but damn those are some harsh penalties for sure.

I dont know, that sounds like some sci-fi shit to me.

You have a society in martial law with a bunch of people trying to save themselves by narcing on their friends. Everyone selling out taking the mark of the beat to remain alive.

It's all just crazy.

Perhaps, but when you are obligated to report something you witness or else face prison, the line gets a bit more blurred, no?

I think everyone should report a crime if they witness it. Too bad there are too many chickens who don't care or dare.
Of course it make it difficult if it is people you know, friends and family, but it still make them criminal. It also depend on the level of crime. I would have no doubts reporting a friend if he abused his kids or did something else terrible.

Forcing people to spy, is forcing people to seek crime scenes. If you don't witness a crime, but something suspicious, there are no existing or proposed laws that tell you to act Sherlock Holmes.

Yeah sorry I was too fast. I did not read it was drug related.
Sending a parent to jail for trying to help his kid out of problems, instead of reporting it, makes no sense. On the other hand, parents not helping their kids, should not be allowed to have kids.

Btw,I can't see how this is comparable with Stalin. War on drugs was not exactly his motives

you think the war on drugs is the motive in US? if you think that, no doubt you vote for Bush, because you're as gullible as fuck.

you also said:
Too bad there are too many chickens who don't care or dare.
Of course it make it difficult if it is people you know, friends and family, but it still make them criminal.

Now put that to the test. Your younger brother (let's say for arguments sake you have one), steals a pack of pens for college. He could go to jail for a short time, if punished to the full extent of the law, but if you don't tell on him, and you get found out, you get put into jail for way longer, up to 20 years. Does that sound fair or right to you?

it will not fly.

want to win a war on drugs? - tax it, because no matter what you try, drugs won't go anywhere.

There are actually TWO big bills coming to Congress next week. You can see both at:

http://blogs.salon.com/0002762/

In the light blue field at the top of the page. Each link will send you to where you can email your Representative/Senator(s) and voice your position. After all, isn't that exactly what Justice Stevens told us to do on Monday? The reason you get legislated against is because you won't stand up AGAINST what you believe is wrong. Don't wait for the "other guy" to fix it for you. Become Pro-Active!

America is being turned into the new evil empire and unfortunately 90% of the citizens are too busy watching TV to notice. It's funny to talk to Americans who don't understand why they're still not the "good guys".
