OK, now I'm gonna blow your mind...this rifle is actually a $29 plastic airsoft rifle with simulated bullets in the magazine, battery operated fully auto...fucked up how real it looks right? had you guys going.

it was on special at shortyusa.com and I had to grab it.

I have several real guns, and several airsoft's that we use for our little gunfights at the office...The S&W, glock 19 and Glock 27 are real.

i don't just feel the need. i am exercising my rights.

above and beyond protection, disarming the public allows the government to remove the ultimate power of people in a democracy.

the power to over thrown when a government becomes overly corrupt.

and don't construe this literally, i'm not advocating armed insurection, unless it were totally neccesary.

This is what our founding fathers were recognizing. The last thing a corrupt government and military wants is armed citizens. Guns are very illegal in Mexico (I know a guy that did 4 years for one) and look at the horrible government they have.

You can usually tell who "respects" the gun and who doesn't.

Same as automobiles. Some people collect or admire cars because of the feel of driving them, the satisfaction of knowing all about them, the look and feel from an artistic view, and some guys have a cranked up engine so they can lay rubber because it makes them feel like a man.

In either case one type should not be confused with the other. A car has several purposes, transportation, to facilitate the enjoyment of driving, and as a showpiece that says something about the owner. A gun has many purposes as well, killing something, to facilitate the enjoyment of target shooting, and as a showpiece that says something about the owner.

whether something is "bad" or "good" should depend on the owners intention, not the object.

To say "guns are bad", you may as well say "Cars are bad" since they can cause someones death as well (and do so more often than guns).
An interesting, considered and well argued reply ! I'm impressed. However I have to disagree about the purpose of guns. Granted they can be used to target shoot for skill. But you have to admit their primary purpose is to shoot and kill. That's what they were invented for. You can target shoot with BB guns on paper targets can't you?? Using your example of the car, it's primary purpose is transportation, that's what it was invented for. Yes it can be used to kill if that's the drivers intentions and it can be used as a status symbol/show piece about the owner. But surely with a real gun "as a showpiece that says something about the owner." it suggests the owner likes to shoot and kill things. If they like target shooting what about non-lethal weapons that allow practicing the skill?? If they like killing...urm ??? Draft them into the Army ?? ???

As to the "guns are bad" statement, yes it was a bit dividing things into two groups of good and bad simplistically. Normally I'm don't do that, but I really can't see any positive points of allowing mass ownership of guns (or any weapon). I'd be interested to hear any. And no it isn't a fundemental right as a citizen. In the US it may say so in the constitution, but visit a country where they don't have that right and you don't find them demanding to be armed and claim it as a right. Poll most citizens of such a country and I bet the desire would be very low. Too many guns in circulation means slip ups happen, kids , drunks, strung out drug addicts, angry emotional people get hold of them more easily and do things they wouldn't be able to do so easily if they didn't have a gun. ie . Kill others.
Granted you can kill with a knife but unless you are highly trained knife thrower you have to get up close and personal and probably struggle with your target to kill them. Much less sanitised and probably a lot harder than shooting from a distance. Also likely to be less lethal.

Anyway even if you disagree with what I've said I hope I've made you think abit.

By the way that "Toy" gun that looks so real....that's as scary as the real thing. How many people have been shot and killed by police for playing with one of them in public?

Later..

It's not illegal, you just have to go through the proper licensing procedures. New York City is a bit more stringent on it's rules but the other surrounding counties allow carry on a permitted basis. A full local and federal background check, face to face interview, and it helps if you have "elected" training. They don't force you to have training, but in the face to face meeting you need to show the investigating officer that you know how to safely own and safeguard one, so I'd suggest taking a gun safety course. Furthermore there are several groups that can carry concealed: Police officers, Peace officers, Target shooters (to and from range or hunting locations), Business owners (or those who may do bank drops), private investigators/bounty hunters, home protection (no carry, just have in the home).

Most people get a target license since it is easiest...and anytime they have it they are "going to the range" it's a kind of loophole catchall. Conveniently, you can use any range anytime and there are ranges on both the east and west sides of the island that are open 24hrs so no matter where you are going, so you can always say you were on your way to a range.

When traveling to the range you must carry loaded and concealed on your person (so you can safeguard the weapon).

Good debate, quite enjoyable, and well noted point.

I do feel however that NY's current system is the best. You have to be sane and go through a background check, and a face-to-face interview with the police department to get the permit. As opposed to states where you can just buy one. There is also an extensive application which forces only those who are serious to follow through.

This way nut jobs don't get them, but safe law abiding citizens can have them. If not, only those willing to break the law will have them.

I know someone who wants a gun, and he's a bit whacked in the head, whenever he's beeing tailgated he'll say something like "If I had a gun I would shoot him right now", or when someone looks at him or his gf in a way he doesn't like, he says that if he had a gun he would shoot them.

And I think he really will get one too. It scares the crap out of me. I have a feeling if we were to get in a fight he might wave one around at me too.

But he would do well in the face to face interview, he can carry himself well. No one can tell that he's a bit whacked in the head, only the ones close to him.
